  • It’s got beautiful copper turrets. It’s got slender stone towers. It is more than a century old. And while it might look like a magic castle, it is actually a hotel – the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac. It towers over Quebec City by day and its floodlit façade is a beautiful nighttime guardian for a graceful city. It always pays to look for fresh perspective when you are photographing famous sights. In mid-September 2005, I was utterly captivated by Quebec City, even though it rained for most of the two days that I spent there. The fortified city was founded almost four centuries ago and is designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage treasure. This shot was taken late in the afternoon of my last day, just as weak patches of blue sky started to appear through the grey, overcast conditions. I was on the historic wooden boardwalk overlooking the St. Lawrence River when three American tourists stopped me to ask if I would take a photograph of them with their own cameras. After I had done so, I realized that I was actually standing just under the extremity of the roof of the Lorne pavilion. By moving back a few feet, I found I could actually capture an interesting perspective of one of the city’s most imposing buildings – the Chateau Frontenac. The light wasn’t great, but by shooting from inside an area of deep shadow, I was able to create an angled motif-in-silhouette for a “different” depiction of one of the city’s most famous symbols. And consider this: if the view is this good in bad weather, just think how stunning it must be under a clear blue sky. Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac Canada05-Film-AAA021

  • EVERY NOW AND AGAIN, I LIKE TO PLAY WITH LIGHT, JUST TO SEE WHAT IT CAN DO. SO, THE OTHER NIGHT WHILE I WAS TAKING NIGHT SHOTS OF THE NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ACROSS THE STREET FROM MY HOUSE, I DID SOMETHING I HAVEN’T DONE IN A LONG TIME. I TOOK A PHOTO, USING MY CANON EOS KISS REBEL, OF “FAIRMONT SCHOOL ZOOMIED WITH THE LENS”, GOING FROM 300MM DOWN TO 70MM WITH MY QUANTARAY TELEPHOTO LENS, WHILE THE SHUTTER WAS OPEN WITH THE REMOTE SHUTTER RELEASE AND THE CANON CAMERA WAS ON THE BULB SETTING WITH EVERYTHING ON MY TRIPOD AS TIGHT AS I COULD MAKE IT. IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, THIS SHOT WAS TAKEN FOR 10 SECONDS WITH THE APPERATURE ON F:16, SO I DIDN’T OVER BURN THE IMAGE AND BRING IN TOO MUCH LIGHT. THE TRICK WAS DOING THE ZOOMING WITHOUT CREATING TOO MUCH WOBBLE ON THE STREEMS OF LIGHT. WITH POST POLIO SYNDROME AND NERVE DAMAGE IN MY NECK, MY HANDS ARE STARTING TO SHAKE MORE AND MORE. SO, I WAS SURPRISED TO FIND THE LIGHT WAS FAIRLY STRAIGHT. THIS SCHOOL IS A NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA ACROSS THE STREET FROM MY HOUSE. MOST OF THE OLD SCHOOL WAS TORN DOWN, ALL BUT THE ONE BUILDING THAT I WANTED TORN DOWN THE MOST. THE ONE STRAIGHT ACROSS FROM MY HOUSE, WHERE THE KINDERGARDEN CLASS WAS. NOW IT’S GOING TO BE A DAY CARE CENTER, SO HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE A LITTLE BIT QUIETER. THE NEW SCHOOL IS SUPPOSED TO BE READY BY THE END OF AUGUST, BUT THERE IS A LOT MORE CLEAN UP WORK TO BE DONE, SO THE CONSTRUCTION WORKERS PUT UP AN 8 FOOT HIGH WALL SO THEY COULD CLEAN UP WITHOUT DISTURBING STUDENTS OR NEIGHBORS. I DON’T KNOW WHY THEY BOTHERED, IT’S JUST SOMETHING ELSE THEY WILL HAVE TO TEAR DOWN WHEN THEY ARE FINISHED WITH THE OTHER MESS. SUCH A WASTE OF COOD PARTICLE BOARDS AND 2X4’S. BECAUSE WHEN THEY TAKE THE WALL DOWN, IT’S ALL GOING IN THE RECYCLE BENDS TO BE GROUND UP AND PROBABLY BURNED AT THAT POINT . I KNOW THE FOLKS THAT OWN DURAFLAME LOGS AND THEY WILL BUY ANY TYPE OF WOOD THAT CAN BE GROUND UP AND COMPRESSED INTO BURNABLE LOGS THAT THEY CAN MAKE MONEY FROM.

  • View from the “end” of the lake. October 2002 with Nikon Coolpix 990 The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is a Fairmont Hotel on the eastern shore of Lake Louise, near Banff, Alberta. The original Chateau was gradually built up at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century by the Canadian Pacific Railway and was thus “kin” to its predecessors, the Banff Springs Hotel, and the Château Frontenac. The hotel’s wooden Rattenbury Wing burned down on July 3, 1924, and was replaced by the current Barrot Wing one year later. The Painter Wing, built in 1913, is the oldest portion of the hotel still standing. The Mount Temple Wing, opened in 2004, is the newest wing of the hotel and features modern meeting facilities, including the Mount Temple Ballroom. The hotel was first conceived by the railway at the end of the 19th century, as a vacation destination to lure moneyed travellers into taking trains and heading West. By the time airplanes and automobiles had displaced the trains, it had gained sufficient renown to have a life of its own. The Canadian Pacific Railway long ago sold it to other interests. From the start, the goal was to exploit the stunning natural beauty of the emerald-green lake and of Victoria glacier which rose above it. There were many hiking and canoeing itineraries for nature lovers. Eventually, all the natural areas around the hotel were incorporated into the Banff National Park. This park has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Originally built to function only in summer, the hotel was winterized in 1982 and now offers all of the regular ski resort fare during the winter months. In addition to the usual skiing, ice skating and snowboarding, there are sleigh rides, ice sculpture contests and snowshoe excursions.
