Sometimes faeries take humans away to beautiful, magical places but sometimes, the places they take us are dark and not so beautiful. This was done for a project themed “Fear’s Playground.” It’s based on a nightmare I had a few years ago where this malevolent nixie was terrorizing a small town and killing off young men. The dream started with her drowning a surfer so that’s the scene I illustrated here. It was actually a rather terrifying dream—I guess because I have such a strong fear of drowning.
A cute little fairy sitting on a toadstool with her friends the ladybugs! Hand drawn and colored digitally in photoshop
The centre butterflies symbolize the soul growing and transforming and protected by unicorns (symbolizing magic, innocence and myth). Guardian angels watch over the transformation night and day. This is just one of my many mandalas. They are created from meditation and often paint themselves – I just wield the brush! The mandala is a tool for growth and spiritual connection and I am pleased to offer my first image :) All images are fully copyrighted, all rights reserved. Bright Blessings / Marg
When someone mentions a ghost, most of us think of cemeteries, haunted houses, and human-sized transparent figures draped in sheets. / Likewise, the word “faerie” is usually linked with cute little figures with wings, magick, bright colours and merry mischief. However, mention a Banshee, and people squirm. / The Banshee, like a ghost, can represent death to many people, but that is not her actual role in folklore, or in our lives. The Banshee from the Irish bean sí, or bean sidhe (“woman of the síde” or “woman of the fairy mounds”) is a female spirit in Irish mythology, usually seen as an omen of death and a messenger from the Otherworld. / According to legend, one Banshee guards each Milesian Irish family; these are the families whose names start with O’ or Mac, though those prefixes have often been dropped, particularly by American families. / Nonetheless, there is a Banshee for each branch of these families, and the family Banshee can follow the descendants to America, Australia, or wherever the Irish family travels or emigrates. / Her moarnful cry can be heard anywhere. / The Banshee protects the family as best she can, perhaps as a forerunner of the “Guardian Angel” in Christian traditions. However, the time we are most aware of her is before a tragedy that she cannot prevent. Meaning, that traditionally, the Banshee appears shortly before a death in “her” family. Despite her grim reputation, seeing or hearing a Banshee is not what actually causes the death. / The Banshee herself is traditionally a very kind woman, as poet and historian W. B. Yeats commented, “You will with the banshee chat, and will find her good at heart.” / Perhaps her appearance and wailing before a death are efforts to protect her family from a death or other tragedy that she foresees. Here I have depicted her in her guise as the young woman she once was, tho her eyes are red from centuries of weeping and she still cries black tears. / Behind her perched majestically on the clifftop, the ruined medieval Castle of Dunluce sits still, once home to the great irish families. / Forever loyal she guards the ruins, weeping at the loss of the great families. / / “There were originally five towers; there are now only two remaining: “Macuilin’s Tower” on the east side, which contains the remains of a staircase, and a smaller tower seawards called Mave Roe’s Tower; so called after Mave Roe, supposed by some to have been a relative of the MacQuillins, and by others, their banshee, or fairy spirit, whose wail, they say, is still heard above the winter’s storm, and who keeps the apartment scrupulously clean, expecting the return of the former owners.” – From Sketches of Olden Days in Northern Ireland by Rev. Not all swans may be what they first seem – some may shed their feathery coats at night and reveal themselves to be beautiful female Fays. If these coats are stolen, then the maidens will become trapped in humanoid form. If the thief is a human male, he may then take the maiden as a (possibly unwilling) bride. Should this occur, it raises the possibility that when the man least expects it a whole flight of swans will come to liberate their sister and her swanskin. Despite their usual serene demeanour, swans should not be underestimated, for should they become displeased they can prove themselves to be considerably powerful and aggressive creatures. Therefore any brigand and boor meddling in the life of a Swan Maiden could very likely come to sorely regret his actions. Other Swan Maidens though may be trapped in avian form as a result of a curse bestowed upon them. In Celtic myth it was customary for someone to embark upon and complete a series of heroic tasks on behalf of the Swan Maidens (and occasionally Swan Men), in order that their human form may again be resumed. The Celtic Goddess / Saint Bridget was also worshipped in some localities as being a Swan-Goddess. – quoted from here Taken at Royal National Park just south of Sydney. 12×18 pastel on Wallis sanded paper This is the first of a series I plan to do on the elemental wind spirits of the four directions. The Wind of the East is the wind of rebirth and of Spring. Our ancient ancestors always knew what direction they were facing and connected with the spirits of all directions. By connecting with these ancient spirits too we can begin to feel connected to the Oneness of all that is. Face the East and feel Spring’s soft wind blowing through you, connecting you to your beginning and releasing you of all you no longer need. Also from the series: /

The ‘Wood Spirit’ is trying to help restore the balance of nature by encouraging new growth. She’s not too happy about the felled tree and the fact that her undertaking is becoming an increasingly difficult task but she is determined. I wanted this to be evident in her intense expression and piercing stare.
This galloping spirit dances over the Moors, watching over the sacred lands, ready to fly away with raven’s wings. This is a photo-composite made using several layers. The horse is from this stock photo.
