This is part of a series i have put together. I am growing ever fascinated with childhood, their thoughts and in particular children’s literature, art and so-called amusement – there is always an intense darkness about it – so i have tried to create dark images visually and psychologically – i didn’t ask Abe to pose but was pleased his head was turned because now i hope we look through him and discover our own thoughts (Hope that makes sense to you).

The dizzy after spell you feel coming off the chairoplane is depicted here. Created in illustrator and Photoshop, unworldly bright colours and blurs gives the piece an in motion feel.

A carousel is an amusement ride consisting of a rotating platform with seats, traditionally in the form of wooden horses or animals, for passengers which are often moved mechanically up and down to simulate galloping. This leads to one of the machine’s alternative names, the galloper. Other popular names are merry-go-round, roundabout and flying horses. Usually, music is looped while the rides spins.

Lyrics of Crash Test Dummies “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” “Once there was this kid who / Got into an accident and couldn’t come to school / But when he finally came back / His hair had turned from black into bright white / He said that it was from when / The car had smashed so hard Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm / Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” / ... / Crash Test Dummies / . / / .

This was a commission piece for a local customer, she wanted my original, ‘Frank’ to be a little more silver, and what the customer wants, the customer gets, and I actually think shes right in this case, he looks lovely! I hope you agree, anyway! Please visit my myspace page if you’re interested in my framing style, www.myspace.com/artwayphotography (I suck at html links, sorry!) xx

This old fashioned fair ground ride comes to Grantham a couple of times a year, when they close the main street to traffic and let the fair take over. I have lots of good nightime photos of various rides, but this is my all time favorite as I’ve actually sold five copies of this image to various people who live locally.

The big wheel arrives in town … great opportunity for a view over Belfast ... and of course a snap or two. I tried to blend the curvature of the fence with the curvature of the wheel (I think it works) ... the two pigeons have the best seats in town!

The Ferris wheel is named after George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. Ferris designed and built the first 264 foot (80 meter) wheel for the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois in 1893. The wheel was intended as a rival to the Eiffel Tower, the centerpiece of the 1889 Paris exhibition. I just liked the contrast of that Blue sky… Luna Park, Sydney / May 2008

Girls spinning on a whirling carnival ride during a mid summer’s night; from a series: Sunset on the Small Town Carnival. Owing to the rise of mega-parks and high liability insurance, small town carnivals are rapidly disappearing. Whenever possible I try to document these vanishing icons of the Twentieth Century American landscape. The original image was shot at 1/15th with a camera flash and 2 remote strobes. The long exposure shows motion and the flash freezes detail. I used opposing color filters on the remotes to get better depth in the subject. In post processing I used a combination of effects from both Illustrator and PhotoShop. The big trick was getting the file size down by rasterizing my AIs in PS and reopening them in AI and re-saving as a vector.
