  • This old fashioned fair ground ride comes to Grantham a couple of times a year, when they close the main street to traffic and let the fair take over. I have lots of good nightime photos of various rides, but this is my all time favorite as I’ve actually sold five copies of this image to various people who live locally.

  • A carousel is an amusement ride consisting of a rotating platform with seats, traditionally in the form of wooden horses or animals, for passengers which are often moved mechanically up and down to simulate galloping. This leads to one of the machine’s alternative names, the galloper. Other popular names are merry-go-round, roundabout and flying horses. Usually, music is looped while the rides spins.

  • Not your average backyard swingset.

  • Whirling rides at the Florida State Fair. 10 second exposure at F 22. Tripod and patience to capture ride at the top of its spin cycle, and to have the Ferris Wheel in the background stable.

  • A summer at the California state fair in Sacramento.

  • Girls spinning on a whirling carnival ride during a mid summer’s night; from a series: Sunset on the Small Town Carnival. Owing to the rise of mega-parks and high liability insurance, small town carnivals are rapidly disappearing. Whenever possible I try to document these vanishing icons of the Twentieth Century American landscape. The original image was shot at 1/15th with a camera flash and 2 remote strobes. The long exposure shows motion and the flash freezes detail. I used opposing color filters on the remotes to get better depth in the subject. In post processing I used a combination of effects from both Illustrator and PhotoShop. The big trick was getting the file size down by rasterizing my AIs in PS and reopening them in AI and re-saving as a vector.

  • Taken at Appleby Horse Fair, after swimming across a deep pool in the river, the horse has just touched the bottom again and is trying to jump out of the water. Extra Note about the day, My daughter & 2 of her friends (all 15 year olds) went with me one year. The horses are brought down to the river to be washed and have fun in the water. The girls just stood around near the access point hoping to get involved, well this gypsy owner came down with 5 horses, looked at the girls keen faces and said take them in for me, so they jumped at the chance. All their clothes on straight in, it’s about 30cm deep at the access point then as you ride them round to the start of the deep hole, its 1m deep. Swimming across the deep hole gets them soaked up to the neck and more if you fall off. A fantastic time was had by them all, they were in the river for 2 hours but would not come out even though they were freezing. Lucky a said bring some spare clothes just in case you get to have a go.

  • No matter how many times I have been to the State Fair, some rides are as timeless as the Ferris Wheel. This is one such ride. Taken a few days ago, this image could have been taken back in the 1960s.
