This woman is a victim of a seemingly never ending war in southern congo. She has suffered sexual violence (rape) so severe it has rendered her incontinent. She now exists purely as a result of a courageous charity called Heal Africa, and indeed her own inner strength and faith. I asked her if I could take her portrait and she stood up (which must have been painful), straightened her back and stared straight down the lens. No stopping to straighten her scarf, no preening, no fear. Just an honesty so raw, so uninhibited and so rare, I caught my breath and thought I’d never breath again. I was totally overpowered by her intensity. After I took the shot and showed it to her she smiled and thanked me. It still gives me a shiver to look at it now. HEAL Africa calendar available now!!! A summer at the California state fair in Sacramento.

Taken at Appleby Horse Fair, after swimming across a deep pool in the river, the horse has just touched the bottom again and is trying to jump out of the water. Extra Note about the day, My daughter & 2 of her friends (all 15 year olds) went with me one year. The horses are brought down to the river to be washed and have fun in the water. The girls just stood around near the access point hoping to get involved, well this gypsy owner came down with 5 horses, looked at the girls keen faces and said take them in for me, so they jumped at the chance. All their clothes on straight in, it’s about 30cm deep at the access point then as you ride them round to the start of the deep hole, its 1m deep. Swimming across the deep hole gets them soaked up to the neck and more if you fall off. A fantastic time was had by them all, they were in the river for 2 hours but would not come out even though they were freezing. Lucky a said bring some spare clothes just in case you get to have a go.

I can’t believe there is less than 250 Sumatran Tigers in the wild today, and at least 2-5 a DAY are being killed for skins and alternitive medicines. It sadens me a great deal to know this… For every framed print I sell of the 3 tiger photos I upload to RedBubble, I will donate $5-$15 depending on frame size to the Wildlife Warriors – Tiger fund. This will help save the magestic animals from poachers in their native habitat. We have to help these tigers, because they can’t help themselves.. It’s up to us! Canon 50D 300mm, Australia Zoo.
