Hello, and welcome to the first Pulp Faction Profile. The aim of this journal is to help spotlight some of the stellar talent on display in the Pulp Faction: Comics and Sequential Art group. First cab off the rank is the whimsical stylings of Caanan… Caanan Occupation: Illustrator – storyboards and kid’s books, mainly Secret Occupation: Comic Strip Artist Hometown: Ballarat, Vic Australia Currently Residing: Toronto, ON. Canadia. Influences: / I grew up on Peanuts, Archie comics, and the old Gladstone Disney comics – Carl Barks, Don Rosa, etc. They remain my strongest influences, but as I got older – as a teenager, I was a big fan of Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen, etc, then threw that all away. And after that, took in animated films and all the behind the scenes concept art and storyboarding that went into them, Calvin & Hobbes, Zits, Mutts, Bone, Liberty Meadows and the work of Doug TenNapel. Current projects: / Apart from the advertising storyboarding which keeps me fed, clothed and sheltered, I work on my comic strips, The Middle Ages, which comes out bi-monthly from Local Act Comics, about a bunch of 12 year olds, and Squirrels and Pigeons, which I hope to break into a newspaper somewhere, somehow. It’s about a park janitor who can talk to the squirrels and pigeons there, so it’s kinda nutty, but it’s also more about how, because he has a kind of lowly job, he’s as largely ignored by our increasingly self-obsessed society as the animals are. It might sound cynical, but with cartoons you almost have to be. I also have about twenty other kids book/comic ideas all at various stages of development that I tinker with on and off. I sometimes think I’d make a better writer, but I’m a massive control freak and have the obsessive need to hold on to these stories so I can draw them myself one day. And lastly, check out my redbubble shirts. I try and make t-shirts that are kind of nerdy and for your inner child, because if you put that kind of thing on your chest, I’d hope that other like-minded people will respond to it, conversations will start up, and people will find, deep down, that their inner child isn’t as dead as they thought. linkage: / Occasional Comics Disorder – has latest strips and news as it comes. caanan.net – My old site with various strips. Never completed, as I left the country before I could finish it, but still, there’s some laughs to be had there. Local Act Comics – so people can find out where to purchase The Middle Ages. Oh, as well as Junk, (written by Dave Cunning, drawn by Me) and my 24 hour comics double shot – Gypsy and the Astronaut (2006 winner) and Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow (2007 – 16pg category – winner). I also contributed to the Presents anthology, issues 2 and 3.

Hello and welcome to the second Pulp Faction Profile, where we aim to spotlight the amazing talent coming out of the Aus. independant comic scene and beyond. Our second factioneer is an oz comics dynamo – not content merely to produce and promote his own work, David has started what could arguably be one of the most prolific publishers of local content in recent memory through the formation of Local Act Comics. So, without any further ado… David J Cunning Occupation: Business Manager Secret Occupation: Local Act Comics Director, comic artist and writer Hometown: East Ringwood, Vic Australia Currently Residing: Bayswater, Vic Australia. Influences: / I grew up on Peanuts, Wizard of Id, Andy Capp, Garfield, Dick Tracy and the old Gladstone Disney comics. From there it was Spiderman, Batman, Sin City, Hellspawn, Hellboy and Hellblazer (what’s with all the HELL :-P). My strongest influences would have to be Kelly Jones (Batman), Frank Miller (Sin City), Mike Mingola (Hellboy) and Marcelo Frusin (Hellblazer and Loveless). Current projects: / Running Local Act Comics, which is one of the biggest comic publishers in Australia. We organise production and distribution of Aussie comics on behalf of their creators. This includes attending conventions, keeping the website up to date and shipping catalogues out to stores across the country. On top of that I’m working as the artist on the horror series Down Under and the fantasy series Strange Dreams (both the webcomic and the miniseries). Once I manage to clear the decks again I’ll be looking at getting back into my western series Billy Joe Tequila. I also co-ordinate the LAC Presents… Anthology which comes out 2-3 times a year. I’m a bit of a redbubble addict so I often find myself knocking up new tee shirt designs when I should be doing other things…Its hard to cut back when its so much fun. linkage: / Local Act Comics – Its my Aussie comic baby. Representing loads of Aussie creators is a blast. Strange Dreams, the webcomic Previous Profilies: / Profile 1: Caanan

Hello and welcome to the latest Pulp Faction Profile, spotlighting the talent in the Pulp Faction: Comics and Sequential Art group here on the Bubble. Our next artist is one Rhys McDonald, a NSW-based illustrator with a folio full to the brim with robots, wrestlers, bloodnuts and pin-up girls. So, without any further ado, we give you… Rhys McDonald Occupation: illustrator – editorials mostly Secret Occupation: Astronaut (kind of still working on that one) Hometown: Sydney, NSW Australia Currently Residing: Shoal Bay, NSW Australia. Influences: / I never really thought about comics until my late teens and picked up Jim Mahfood’s 40oz comics and had a lightbulb type moment in the comic book shop and it grew from there (Eightball was my other lightbulb moment). Now I’m a big fan of Stephen Silver, Jon Adams and Josh Howard. Writing wise Jon Adams, and Howard again, it’ll sound cheesy but my oldest and best friend “Tom”:http://fivethumbsdown.blogspot.com/ is a big influence on me, Mike Mignola as well. I’m pretty much influenced by something if it’s fun or funny or absurdly skewed. That’s what I’m into. Current projects: / The Plastic Age – The chance for me to, occasionally express something which would often be easier done with a straight blog. Other times just an excuse to make dick and fart jokes, or more often than not, to rag on someone. The comic I’ve had people say they like the most, ends with aged versions of the characters pooping their pants. This amuses, and upsets me. / My main project at the moment is trying secure more work, like an insatiable hunger I desire more delicious jobs at various magazines and other outlets. If anyone is interested, write me (cheap and nasty plugs rule) / There’s also the heavy amount of cheesecake illustrations I’ve been doing lately. I’m not sure what these are all building too but I’m really enjoying them. Then there are my new books, released earlier this month. (details right here) linkage: / The Plastic Age – general updates and comics, plenty of art, mini comics available from there also (new books will be available there also) / Art Blog – general drawings and other bits and pieces, not updated as much as TPA is, still meaty though. / Redbubble page – If you want to purchase something, get it from here. I’m on the ‘bub a fair bit these days and something is always getting ready to be added Previous Profiles: / Profile 1: Caanan / Profile 2: David J Cunning

Well, it’s been over three months since the last installment, and it’s time to catch up. For those of you unfamiliar with this series, the Pulp Faction Profiles are used to spotlight some of the awesome talent on display in the Pulp Faction group here on RedBubble. Today’s profile features the one and only BMB, gentleman, scholar, and madman behind the Stark Reality webcomic and graphic novels (available for sale here). So, without any further ado, heeeeeeeeerrrrrrreeeees BMB… Occupation: Housewife (…But I have a penis) / Secret Occupation: Art monkey / Hometown: I’ll have to ask my parents. / Currently Residing: East of Melbourne…but not so far east that it actually becomes west. That would be silly. Influences: 2000AD, Judge Dredd Megazine and Heavy Metal (The U.S anthology comic) These would be the major influences I’d guess as they’ve all been a part of my life now for quite some time. I also love/loved: Punisher, Transmetropolitan, The Boys, a bunch of the Verotik comics, the sadly short lived MamTor Event Horizon, Lobo, GI-Joe (I was a pre-teen!) The Maxx, Spawn, the Warhammer 40k comics and the amazing art found within the White Dwarf tabletop gaming magazine. Specific artists…there are so many I’d like to list I’d just end up forgetting most of them! Hmmm…three top ones that I’d love to sit down and learn a thing or two from if I had to pick… 4 hours later …John Hicklenton (The man’s a GOD! BEST. NEMESIS. EVER!) Simon Bisley…it’s 1988/89 and BMB see’s Simon Bisleys B&W ABC Warriors art for the first time. I can’t count the hours I spent staring at each page. Happy times! (Strangely enough, that’s the same time that Hicklenton’s Nemesis was in _2000AD_…hmmm…) Geof Darrow… I want to know how he was able to put the brain-melting detail into stuff like Hard Boiled without going nuts. Current projects: STARK REALITY, STARK REALITY and possibly a bit of STARK REALITY. I do 2 pages a week which takes up a big chunk of my spare time, although that’s probably because I’m a pretty slow artist. Dave Cunning of Local Act Comics will be publishing the Stark Reality stories as graphic novels (ED: the first one is out now) / , so now I’m busy trying to get enough material for volume 3. I have many many ideas for the Stark Reality universe, but I have to try and pace myself, so first I want to properly introduce the world and develop a stable of characters before I start having reoccurring personalities/sequels. Sometimes I do chuck in a little cameo appearance from one stories character in another story just for fun though. # # linkage: My RedBubble account / My webcomic 2 new pages a week! / Buy the Stark Reality Graphic novel here Previous Profiles: Profile 1: Caanan / Profile 2: David J Cunning / Proflie 3: Rhys McDonald

Each year, in schools across Australia (and no doubt the rest of the world), there arrives a day when kids get to colour their hair, draw on their shirts and have a day off of learning – the sports carnival. Yesterday saw my kids sports carnival, it was a beautiful spring day and like the other parents, I grabbed my fold up chair, thermos flask, tea bags and camera and spent the day chearing on the green faction, Neptune. I was sitting with friends and of course, most of our kids were all in different factions. This was cause of some rather loud protesting (as the blue faction were cheating), raucus behavior (someone tried to steal a flag from the blue factions flag race) and competitive cheering/yelling/ screaming. Anyway, I have digressed enough and here are some of my favorites from the day. My son Tyson in full action mode in the flag race / 4 X 50 meter baton relay / My handsome son and two of his ribbons / My daughter showed us she can run – she even came first with this run / The multi ball pass (which I had never heard of before the last sports carnival) / The biggest surprise of the day came at the end of the carnival when the winners of the trophies were announced and medals were given out. I had put my camera away at this point as I was fairly positive it wouldn’t be needed, and my daughter was awarded the fairest and best medal for her faction. This of course had me running back to my camera bag, nearly tripping over my feet and swearing at myself for being so eager to pack it all up in the first place. The trophy goes to the faction member who may not be the most capable but for the person who tries their best not only in the carnival, but also in phys. ed. and for sports day training. / I just wanted to share my kids day, and the fact we are so proud of our daughter. I just wish she put in as much effort at home as she obviously does at school. By the way Neptune won the day too, another reason the cheer.
What if Leia, Luke and the gang emplyed urban guerilla tactics in their struggle against the Galactic Empire?
This is an entry for the Pulp Faction 3 Panel Strip competition, which had to incorporate a pineapple, fuzzy teeth and the colour purple in a three panel comic.
Agent Cody Diablo was a systems analyst for the super spy organisation S.H.U.D.D.E.R when she was injured in a freak explosion while undertaking an inventory of experimental weapons. Waking from a coma three years later, Cody had a complete knowledge of all weapons and their uses, as well as flaming limbs! Her burning desire is to dispose of all firearms…and she’ll use any weapon at her disposal to achieve her goal. This is an entry in the Pulp Faction Group Challenge!
