It was a freezing day while River and I were in the nature park. The trees looked cold but stood tall and strong. This is the same image as the first “Winter Blues” after Gigi told me that I should try a darker color for it. So it qualifies as my third try on this “effect thing” thanks to all the instructions and guidance from my “mentor” on this matter! I guess one could say that I love anything that has to do with nature including the living beings, the woods, the trees, the rivers and streams, and the mountains…. In a way, the trees represent longevity even though my “rational mind” knows they don’t live forever – my “passion” towards the trees is in its “illusion” of the ever lasting life, or perhaps what it always gives back to the earth in living or in death. :) Donation to charity / 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to Nature Canada.
This is the little foot bridge around the forest I frequent with River. It was shot after the first snow this winter. Yesterday someone wanted to purchase this piece at a local gallery but she wanted me to give her more choices of framing and I finally came up with this version and she (along with her children) love it as her 12-year-old called it “The Magic Ice Bridge”. So I thought perhaps some of you would like it too! :)
Shadows of a Memory explores the pain that is associated with mental, physical and even sexual abuse. All of us experience an aspect of this pain at some level. We all tend to hide it and many of us never confront the cause. © 2007. Comments welcome. Limited edition (10) archival prints are available from my web site: DAViD M. ALLeN This image was created using Poser, LightWave 3D and Photoshop. It combines both 3D rendered models, my own photos (6) and one photo that I have permission to use (butterflies and flowers © Sandra Torregrosa-Allen). The background texture is made of 4 different layered photos (close up images of natural textures). Text was handwritten within Photoshop using a 6×9 Intuos 2 tablet.

I’ve been attempting to take a photograph like this for some time now and FINALLY got it! Everything about this photograph was planned out and placed accordingly, even the glass – to show that the streaking was a real capture and not some product of any photo editing. I thought that it would take several attempts to accomplish this effect, but the subject followed my instructions very well and I got it on the first try! “Climb if you must. But be prepared to fall down.” The old man’s voice shattered the daydreams the flowed through Ben’s young brain. / He ignored the comment and jogged up the deserted path toward the steep hillside ahead. Halfway up he stopped to enjoy the view. The colors of nature swept over him. The warm air blew the odors of sage and wild fennel and pine across his face which was flooded with sunlight. / He thought for a moment that this was where he wanted to be. From this point he could view the beauty of the scene completely. When he reached his destination, he would be looking back at where he had been as well as the other side. But he would not be able to enjoy the mountain silhouetted against the brilliant sun. / He ignored the thought and continued upward. He had to get to the top.
Gotta love these little pansies. Such a happy flower! /

This was another piece I did for a local benefit two years ago. All participating artists were given 12×12” plywood boards that we could do whatever we liked with. I took a print of my drawing Rock, Scissors, Paper / and cut it down – wrapping it entirely around the board. Then I added white painted branches and made some little leaves out of screen for embellishment. This was awarded at the exhibition to my surprise and delight. Here is what it looked like in entirety: / (Signed and numbered limited-edition prints of the original drawing are available at cynthia’s store) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
This is another assemblage piece I did earlier this year for a local benefit exhibition. I was given a 12×12” plywood board that I could adorn any way I desired. I had this bright green silk dress that I always found too warm to wear so I decided to tear it apart and use it here. But I’m getting ahead of myself. First I made a print of one of the faces from my drawing Seedling for the centerpiece. I wanted this peaceful pristine being to hold court – and hold up to the other forces I’d be subjecting her to. Then I started draping parts of the dress around her – adhering it to the board with acrylic glaze. This took a lot of glaze to get it all to stay in place. Not leaving well enough alone, I brought out some acrylics and started to liven it up further. (can you tell I’m color deprived?) She needed something else out of her emerging-ness – so I dug around until I found these hands that I had found in a paper sample book years ago. I used to have them on my computer monitor. I liked their eyes and they remind me of potatoes. (are you calling authorities yet?) Initially I had about 30 turquoise pencil nubs shooting out from her “wrists”, but decided it got too busy – too many mixed messages – so they were pulled out at the last minute. I think that ultimately, this is a piece that has me once again trying to explore and examine the duality of human nature – the fact that the sacred and profane can rest within the same being. Oh, the title comes from the purchase price of the dress from one of my favorite resale shops.

“What is real about that?” / Was the question floating through screens or from the next room or the past or the future or just embedded in my desire? I turn in half light and see the look, your look and then it is gone and I wonder if it was ever there to start. That is when I hear the question asked. Coming through a curtain of soft gray fog that circles about me. I turn. There it is again. A smile. A look in your eyes. And I don’t care if it is real or not. Suddenly. / Space is 15”x20” acrylic, ink and gesso on paper
