  • An eyelash or simply lash is one of the hairs that grow at the edge of the eyelid. Eyelashes protect the eye from debris and perform some of the same function as whiskers do on a cat or a mouse in the sense that they are sensitive to being touched, thus providing a warning that an object (such as an insect or dust mite) is near the eye (which is then closed reflexively ( wikipedia.org)

  • I don’t know who was drowsier as I watched Mr. Scruffy on his tiny branch, me or my little hummer friend. We both seemed to be nodding in the heat of Indian summer. I got this shot of him napping just before I, too, had to call it quits and head inside for a little snooze. View larger so you can see Mr. Scruffy’s little eyelid! Here’s Mr. Scruffy in his waking state:

  • I am very eager to share my new finding,a close-up of the planet Tandaloor researched by the eminent Frank Herbert in his famous Dosadi Experiment. The planet is occupied by amphibious, froglike beings, the webbing on their feet is a necessity to extract oxygen from water so they can also exist on land. They live as much in water as out of it, with waterways connecting their buildings and serving as passageways within their homes. You can see one of the main waterways on the top right of this image. Gowachin society is structured around large extended families, or phylums, each of which owns a huge family hall. A Gowachin’s phylum affliation is indicated by tattoos on its eyelids. Most members of a phylum are born into it, but it is possible for outsiders to make an application to join a new psylum. Historically, people including famous celebrities have been missing, their bodies not accounted for. What the Gowachin society refers to as an application is in reality an abduction, especially of females. This is a male dominated society who believe that females have inferior intelligence and no viable function beyond breeding. Of course, we are familiar with this antiquated caste system on Earth;however on Tandaloor no progress has been made to change the male’s perception of the female and women are sequestered in the graluz, or breeding pool, deep inside he Gowachin’s house. This breeding pool can only be accessed through underwater tunnels. In the middle of the photograph, one of the tunnels is visible. It is there that the young tads are hatched and as the male reachs maturity, they have to pass several rites of passage to join the adult male society. If you look closely on the arms of the females, there are fertility marks. It is also interesting that Frank Herbert documented two types of eyelid tattoos, one which represents the swiftist of the tribe called Running Phylum and the other representing the deep swimmers. • Self, close-up. / Post-processed in Photoshop. / No, it’s not a real piercing, I took a ring which had this opening and forced it on my downer eyelid, it wasn’t painful, but not comfortable either. / :)

  • Lenny’s eye. Kinda looks like an X-Files poster, eh? Canon 450D 50mm/1.8, shot through a reverse-mounted Yashica 50mm/1.9 macro lens. Had to use ISO 800 in order to keep the shutter speed high enough for a clear shot.

  • Any eye of a sleeping Red-Eyed Tree Frog. The eyelid looks like a post-Art Deco stained glass; my assumption is that the amphibian still is able to see approaching danger while resting, and at the same time disguises the conspicuous black pupil. When Red-Eyed wakes up, the eyes pop up like those lights on sport carts – I have to try and make a series of shots showing the proces
