An Orange-Barred Sulphur, Phoebis Philea, is sipping nectar from a flower Identification: Upperside of male bright yellow-orange; forewing has red-orange bar and hindwing has red-orange outer margin. The female, much larger than the male, has two forms, one off-white and the other yellow-orange. Both have upperside of forewing with solid black cell spot and a submarginal row of broken black smudges. Early Stages: Females lay eggs singly on leaves and flowers of host plants; caterpillars prefer to feed on the flowers. Caterpillar is yellow-green with black and yellow bands on the sides. It also has white-ringed reddish spots. Habitat: Open lowland sites such as forest edges, city gardens, parks, and road edges. Interesting Facts: Males of this species have a broad orange bar on the forewing, this gives rise to its common name. Range: Lowland tropical America, Brazil, Florida and the keys, rare but seen in Northeast states. Extremely vagrant in Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Connecticut. An ongoing display of the casualties in Iraq to protest against the war in Iraq, and increase the public awareness regarding the military and political fallout of staying there. Each Sunday morning thousands of crosses, as the number of the fallen, for that day, are placed in the sand and volunteers are providing the public with up to the moment information on casualties plus individual stories on the fallen. Acre (or Akko) is a city in the Western Galilee district of northern Israel. It is situated on a low promontory at the northern extremity of Haifa Bay. This is a picture of the port and marina. The port is located on the south side of the old city of Acre. It was built during the Persian times (6-4thC BC), and is still in use today as a marina. The building in the background is Khan al-Umdan, the hostel of the pillars, is one of the most impressive buildings in the old city of Acre. It is located near the port and was used for storage of goods and a night hostel for the merchants. The tower raises high over the east entrance to the Khan. A Zebra Longwing Butterfly, Heliconius charitonius. The Zebra Longwing is common across the country. They have an exceptional lifespan. Several months is not uncommon as compared to a week or two for most butterflies. Zebras have a range from South America, Central America, Mexico, parts of the lower coastal Southeast and Florida. Not much of a strayer or migrator, Zebras have on rare occasion been spotted in the Midwest. The zebra longwing butterfly caterpillars eat the leaves of passion flowers. The passion flower contains a toxin that gives the zebra longwing an unpleasant taste and makes it poisonous to predators. The butterfly drinks the nectar of a wide range of flowers. When it is disturbed, the zebra longwing butterfly makes a creaking sound by wiggling its body. At night, large groups will roost together on tree limbs. This species can reach five to six feet in length, and are among the more “human-friendly” species of North American snakes, mainly due to the fact that they are not venomous, hunt vermin (hence the name) and are easily raised and bred in captivity. When startled or angry, they will hiss very loud and rattle their tails. This is why they are sometimes mistaken for a rattlesnake.Habitat: Found in a wide variety of habitats, including deserts, prairies, woodlands, brushlands, coniferous forests, and even cultivated land. Gopher snakes often live in discarded or conquered gopher holes.
