This is a picture from my day job. The red balls are grass pollen, and the tubes from them are growing down into the flower to fertilise the ovary. To get ready for the photo took some serious effort to get the timing right, then use of chemicals to stain the pollen red, then actually get to the microscope to take the photo. After reading in the forums about the paths people have taken to become artists, and thinking of my desire to be one (as in, to be able to spend all my time on creative pursuits), I began to think about what skills I have already from my current path. My challenge was to find a creative application of those skills, because I’m not in a position to give up work. Yet :) I’ve been using photography to record my work for many years, so that was the first and most obvious answer. I just thought I’d throw that up for interest, as it’s not the sort of thing that you would want framed in your living room I’m sure LOL!

Well this is the shot that made it into the 2008 channel ten weather calendar, so I’m pretty proud of that.Getting this into the calendar was my first… ‘public’ recognition of my work so this is a pretty special shot to me. it is lightning over Adelaide looking down from Mount Osmond. It was taken in December 2006 and featured on the following nights news broadcast.

Yes, I did actually manage to read all 4 massive books in the ‘Twilight’ series while my computer was ‘sick’. So – for a bit of ‘light relief’ – my take on the traditional ‘vampire’. I know this one doesn’t actually ‘match’ any of the wonderful vampire characters in ‘Twilight’ (by Stephanie Meyer) – the only vampire there with flaming red hair definitely comes across as a ‘bad guy’ – not one willing or able to join the good, ‘vegetarian vampire coven’ that the story is based around. / But – I just couldn’t see myself creating an image of something with fangs and a lot of fake blood – so bright red hair has to substitute. A ‘vampire’ maybe not willing or able to clearly show him or herself as she is to the outside non-supernatural world? A composite image created from many of my own photographs. A scene I have often passed by, but either the light was wrong, or I didn’t have the time. / On this occasion, things fell into place, except for the fact that I had left my tripod at home !! DOH !! (on a shopping trip for provisions to Fort William !) / It is a hand-held three shot hdr, because of the extreme lighting. / Loch Lochy is reputed to have a “monster” like Loch Ness ! Shot on my Canon EOS50D, iso 100, auto wb, three RAW’s at -2EV, +2EV,0EV, hand held braced against a bush for added stability, Canon 17-85mm IS lens set at 53mm, f11, processed in Photomatix, then Adobe CS3, with colour adjustments, and more selective levels / curves.
