This is the first in a series I foresee doing, to increase awareness to the plight of endangered and threatened animals from around the globe. This First Edition focuses on three of the largest and most endangered carnivores today, the Sumatran tiger, the Amur leopard, and the Snow leopard. These are by no means the only imperiled wild cats, as the majority of wild cat species smaller in average body size than 30 kg are at a critical stage. / / / Because without these animals I would never be able to bring their beauty to you, I am going to pledge to donate 100% of all of my sales proceeds from cards and prints of the imagery in this series here on Redbubble to Wildlife Conservation Society Thank you for your support in the race to stave off the extinction of these magnificent creatures.

/ / ScienceDaily (Jan. 10, 2002) AUSTIN, Texas Half of all living bird and mammal species will be gone within 200 or 300 years, according to a botany professor at The University of Texas at Austin. (link) / / Although the extinction of various species is a natural phenomenon, the rate of extinction occurring in today’s world is exceptional as many as 100 to1,000 times greater than normal, Dr. Donald A. Levin said in the January-February issue of American Scientist magazine. (link) / / If present trends continue, a mass extinction is very likely underway. The evidence is pieced together from details drawn from all over the world, but it adds up to a disturbing picture. This time, unlike the past, it’s not a chance asteroid collision, nor a chain of climatic circumstances alone that’s at fault. Instead, it is chiefly the activities of an ever-growing human population, in concert with long-term environmental change. (link) / / The typical rate of extinction differs for different groups of organisms. Mammals, for instance, have an average species “lifespan” from origination to extinction of about 1 million years, although some species persist for as long as 10 million years. There are about 5,000 known mammalian species alive at present. (link) / / Given the average species lifespan for mammals, the background extinction rate for this group would be approximately one species lost every 200 years. Of course, this is an average rate; the actual pattern of mammalian extinctions is likely to be somewhat uneven. Some centuries might see more than one mammalian extinction, and conversely, sometimes several centuries might pass without the loss of any mammal species. Yet the past 400 years have seen 89 mammalian extinctions, almost 45 times the predicted rate, and another 169 mammal species are listed as critically endangered. (link)
I always felt a special love for seahorses (Hippocampus). I was really getting sad while finishing this piece of art … stupid humans, destroying everything and trying to get the last specimens before complete extinction.
Thought I’d try something a little Arthurian… Thanks for looking

Rabbits generally live between four and twenty years.Rabbits are ground dwellers that live in environments ranging from desert to tropical forest and wetland. Rabbits kept in a home as pets for companionship are referred to as house rabbits. They typically have an indoor pen and a rabbit-safe place to run and exercise, such as a living or family room. Rabbits are easily trained to use a litter box and can learn to come when called. Their diet typically consists of unlimited Timothy hay, a small amount of pellets, and fresh vegetables. House rabbits are quiet pets, but are unsuitable for households with small children as they are easily frightened by loud noises and can be harmed by mishandling. Domestic rabbits that are not house rabbits also often serve as companions for their owners, typically living in an easily accessible hutch outside the home.

A free-range baby orangutan sucking its thumb in Singapore Zoo, Singapore. This critically endangered species demonstrates significant intelligence, with an ability to reason and think. The orangutan is closest relatives, sharing 97% of the same DNA as humans. I’ve been to Borneo (Dec 2007) and was shocked at the amount of jungle cleared to make way for palm oil plantations. Close your eyes, and imagine flying into Sandakan on the east coast – as far as you can see there are rows upon rows of palm trees. Rows upon rows. Then more rows upon rows. Then more rows upon rows. “Orangutans are one of the most critically endangered of the great apes, due to poaching and habitat loss. Based on the World Bank’s estimation that mechanized logging in the Kalimantan forest, (Indonesian Borneo), will result in its total loss by 2010, and other statistics stating that wild orangutans are disappearing at a rate of 5,000 orangutans per year, optimistic predictions give the orangutan ten more years before extinction in the wild.” (Source: Borneo Orangutan Survival UK http://www.savetheorangutan.co.uk/index.php) Taken with Canon 5D, ISO 1250, f5.6, 1/50th sec, 100-400mm L Series Canon Lens @ 400mm, handheld, no flash, Auto white balance. Gorilla Oil Painting on canvas (40×40cm) When I first saw this gorilla, I was immediately struck by what I perceived to be sadness. He looks so deep in thought and I wondered what this beautiful creature was thinking… of family lost, freedom lost and what we humans do in our endless arrogance and greed to other animals on this planet. I hope that one day, we will realise that they are just as worthy of life and freedom as we would like to believe ourselves to be. I love painting eyes. However, what I like about this painting is not being able to see the gorilla’s eyes. His posture tells the story. This is a close-up view of the painting. Gorillas, the largest of the living primates, are ground-dwelling herbivores that inhabit the forests of Africa. The DNA of gorillas is 98%–99% identical to that of a human, and they are the next closest living relatives to humans after the two chimpanzee species. Gorilla’s are highly endangered, and have been subject to intense poaching for a long time. Threats to gorilla survival include habitat destruction and the bushmeat trade. In 2004 a population of several hundred gorillas in the Odzala National Park, Republic of Congo was essentially wiped out by the Ebola virus. A 2006 study published in Science concluded that more than 5,000 gorillas may have died in recent outbreaks of the Ebola virus in central Africa. The researchers indicated that in conjunction with commercial hunting of these apes creates “a recipe for rapid ecological extinction”. Parrots, also known as psittacines are birds of the roughly 372 species found in most warm and tropical regions. The order is subdivded in three families: the Psittacidae (true parrots), the Cacatuidae (cockatoos) and the Nestoridae. Parrots have a pan-tropical distribution with several species inhabiting the temperate Southern Hemisphere as well. The greatest diversity of parrots is found in South America and Australasia. Parrots, along with crows, jays and magpies, are some of the most intelligent birds, and their ability to imitate human voices enhances their popularity as pets. Trapping of wild parrots for the pet trade, as well as other hunting, habitat loss and competition from invasive species, have diminished wild populations, and more parrots are threatened with extinction than any other group of birds. “Parrot Portrait ….... ” was featured in I Love Birds
Ring-tailed Lemur (Baby) eye’s point of focus. Most lemurs are listed as endangered or threatened species. Many species have gone extinct in the last centuries, mainly due to habitat destruction (deforestation) and hunting. Conservation of lemurs in Madagascar is a high priority, but the country’s poor economic situation and the lemurs’ limited range make it an uphill battle. There are 85 living lemur species accounted for in current publications, with more documentation currently awaiting publication. The Ring-tailed Lemur (Lemur catta) is a large Strepsirhine primate and the most recognized lemur due to its long, black and white ringed tail. Like all lemurs it is endemic to the island of Madagascar. It inhabits gallery forests to spiny scrub in the southern regions of the island. It is omnivorous and the most terrestrial of lemurs. The animal is diurnal, being active exclusively in daylight hours. “Bright baby eye’ d lemur …....” was featured in Cards: Animals and pets… “Bright baby eye’ d lemur …....” was featured in Bits and Pieces “Bright baby eye’ d lemur …....” was featured in Funny Kritters
