  • 145×145 cm, oil on canvas, 2007, private collection South Australia I worked for a month at this portrait, the longest I have ever worked on any painting. I achieved the expression from the beginning, but the problem was the resemblance with the subject on such a large size painting, when my studio wasn’t too large and didn’t allow to see this from the distance. The portrait was very successful, it was sold even before the opening. Many people asked about it, and because it was sold they bought the other portrait I had in the exhibition… twice! That’s right, the other painting, “Capriccio” was sold twice by mistake. Imagine the disappointment of the young couple who found out the second day they payed for a painting which had been sold already. I succeeded in convincing these people that I can manage to do the painting again. If it was “Adagio” I would have never attempted. But it looked much easier to do Capriccio. Doing a portrait twice is tricky, and I was sure very happy when it was finished.

  • A cheeky, young Cambodian boy looks down through a floor. The house was on stilts and I had to lie down on the ground and shoot upwards to get this picture.

  • Nothing too serious, Siena has just ordered her Salt n Pepper squid and the order is taking longer than expected…. We do live in the lucky country if that’s all she’s got to cry about…

  • Scarification is a means of permanently marking the skin by cutting alone, without the use of pigments. The scars may be lighter or darker than your original skin tone and may raise up (keloid scarring). There are many ways to produce a scar but the cut must always penetrate the dermis if a scar is to be produced. The result depends as much on your skin as the method used. Black skin in particular is very good at producing pronounced keloid scars and this is a popular alternative to tattooing for people with very dark skin, for whom a tattoo might not show up very well. In many parts of Africa these scars are marks of beauty and a way to identify someone belonging to a particular group. Scarification also may mark one’s status as a civilized being, adult, or member of a specific ethnic group or initiation association. I thought what can I add to make this more about me, more interesting….then i remembered the beautiful hot air balloons I’d seen recently photographed by my friend Steven Agius and a while ago some other balloons taken by my friend Jeannette Sheehy and I thought it would make a great balloon….drifting away through the atmosphere, deep in thought….that’s how i often find myself…semi self portrait Drawn with pencil on A3 acid free cartridge paper. / Coloured in photoshop
