I’ve just returned from a weekend up in Brisbane. It wasn’t just any weekend it was a huge turning point for me. I went to the Picasso exhibition. As I walked through the black curtain into the masters realm my pulse was racing. Standing in front of the first Picasso artwork I was so overcome with emotion tears were spilling down my cheeks. You might think that I’m exagerating, but to see the works of not only Picasso, but Braque, Ernst, Mattisse, Modigliani, Renoir, Rousseau (there were more) in the flesh was so absolutely a trip out of this world. In my early teen years I visited an exhibition of some of Picasso’s work at the Sydney Gallery and this made such an impression on me and has been a huge influence in my work. While studying design I was facinated by the artists from the turn of the century and I feel that Picasso was very instrumental in artists looking outside the square. I recommend this journey to Brisbane before the exhibition ends. Can you even try to imagine a trip into the beginnings of cubism, surrealism, fauvism, expressionism as an artist I don’t believe you can let this opportunity slip past you.

Originating in Germany and Austria and following the anti-authority thinking of people such as Freud, Nietzsche and Dostoyevsky, the expressionist movement focused on the expression of inner experience and emotion. It was less concerned with the reality of what a subject looked like and expressed the artist’s emotional reaction to it. Expressionist paintings can often be characterised by distorted forms drawn in bold colours and two dimensions, without perspective. But always sought to depict intense emotion and was always strongly subjective. Often the images were full of angst such as Edvard Munch’s The Scream, or the latter paintings of Vincent and Gough such as The Starry Night. Around the time of World War II the expressionist art movement had migrated to the shores of America. Indeed, it was the artists of this time which established New York as a place of importance in the art world. It has been said that expressionism was a precursor to surrealism and influenced artists such as Dali. A huge part of the movement in America became abstract expressionism, characterized by dripping paint onto the canvas. One of the most famous of the abstract expressionist painters of this period was Jackson Pollock. Interestingly the artists pioneering this movement never described themselves as expressionists, it was a label given to them, and as an artistic style is still very much alive today within the work of many contemporary painters.

With the paint brushes, that is. You see, I try to use these delicate, wee paint brushes and get all this detail out of them and it ends up just going all smudgy and stupid looking. Right, well, that’s the pessimist part of me talking. Anyway, sometimes things turn out looking good, but, not how I was trying to make them look. I’m just not a small brush person, that’s all. I’m a big canvas person. I need big canvases and big bushes! Then, the details will be small in the wee small prints, simply because they’ve been shrunk down. But, I haven’t the right sort of hands for wee tiny details except with pens and pencils, sometimes. I think! Here is where else I’ve been going wrong. I have thoughts in my head, often, that I ignre because i haven’t got the money, or the time, or the talent (maybe) to pursue them. Well, not the talent- the thought processes. The know-how of tecnical aspects. Things that stand out in my mind, that are half sculpture, half painting – or weird little objects sticking out of walls as 3-D modern abstract-realism thngies. ..or .. or .. well, never you mind! The point is, I have to do at least some of it I have to make something more than what I’ve been doing, something that is MINE. And, then, I have to stop people from abusing it , and dogs from peeing on it. lol

How good is this?! Amazing, in less than a day of joining up on this site, some kind person bought a canvas print of LONDON CALLING. This is a first attempt at expressionism which was painting over a collage of CLASH clippings. I had a lot of fun creating the painting and I hope that the print gives the buyer lots of pleasure too.
