I was inspired by the contrast and affect of soft, quieting snow to busy city life and its bold structures. This was mainly painted using a palette knife and heavily textured with impasto. The labyrinth was a maze created by the brilliant engineer Daedalus for King Minos to hold prisoners from ever escaping. The Minotaur resided deep within it’s depths, later to be slain by the hero Theseus. Of course Daedalus himself later became a captive to his own creation. Since even he could not find a way to escape from his own construction, he devised wings of wax and feathers and string, and, along with his son, Icharus, flew from the confines of the labyrinth. Icharus, not heeding his father’s warning, flew on too high toward the sun, causing the wax in his wings to melt; and he fell to the earth, and his death. / The labyrinth has been observed in many cultures to be a metaphor of the depths of the human psyche. From the ideas of old Greece to medieval cathedrals to the modern ideas of the psychoanylist Carl Jung, the labyrinthean depths of our own minds may very well be of the very highest construction and capability, as well as our greatest obstacle toward true enlightenment and freedom. / Original work was created using watercolor and gouache media on Arches cold-press 180lb. cotton rag.

I was attempting with this work to represent visually that lucid feeling that one gets at times- I get it whenever I paint- when the world outside of one’s focus becomes blurred, even time seems out of wack. Part of you’s cemented in reality like always but a part is somewhere else. Original work 18”x24”, acrylic on masonite.

145×145 cm, oil on canvas, 2007, private collection South Australia I worked for a month at this portrait, the longest I have ever worked on any painting. I achieved the expression from the beginning, but the problem was the resemblance with the subject on such a large size painting, when my studio wasn’t too large and didn’t allow to see this from the distance. The portrait was very successful, it was sold even before the opening. Many people asked about it, and because it was sold they bought the other portrait I had in the exhibition… twice! That’s right, the other painting, “Capriccio” was sold twice by mistake. Imagine the disappointment of the young couple who found out the second day they payed for a painting which had been sold already. I succeeded in convincing these people that I can manage to do the painting again. If it was “Adagio” I would have never attempted. But it looked much easier to do Capriccio. Doing a portrait twice is tricky, and I was sure very happy when it was finished.

My intention when I did this painting was to take an everyday situation – like looking out for the post-man and turning it into a vibrant and alive moment in time! / No matter how small and trivial things may seem – there is always something else going on: one just has to take a look at that poor fish! I lik this painting, my friends say it makes them feel like ”...putting on their dancing shoes!” / (It’s a frustrating fact, but for some reason this painting just won’t upload to the right proportions – it’s living it’s title to the full – and just NOT conforming!)
