I spend some time looking around the world at various exposure and sales opportunities for art. As the Red Bubble is so full of photographers I thought this link to a Saatchi Photo exposure gallery might be of interest. They have competitions apparently and they are affilliated with the Saatchi advertising co. Good luck to anyone who wants to give it a go. / Cheers Steve

what’s new? well we’ve got 2 new calendars out for 2008; one is the Apres Velo calendar (can be ordered on www.cycling-planet.com or bought at cycling shops) which is all old vintage cycling imagery, pretty cool, the calendar grid is tyre tracks (made by my mountain bike wheels dipped in paint and rolled over paper, wow i get to have some fun! would love to do a mini calendar…could have some fun there) and my normal artwork calendar…..which i guess can be ordered on/ or stockists advised from michael@sarina.net. Both are $10ea. what’s being made? well, i’m just cutting out summer 08 sleepwear and painting/sewing up the samples. so far have made up 2 really pretty ranges and have 2 more to do. I have fabric repeat designs to do and more placement prints to paint up. My kids are great, they help trim embroideries and are little creative directors of the best kind….”Oh, cooooool, mum!” I’ve drawn up the outerwear range (lightweight denim, tees, dresses) and my marketing partners are down in Melbourne this week at Fashion Exposed selling the winter ranges which are gorgeous. We have to redo our website….which takes so much time! But, stay tuned to see it, the first one is very simple www.doilycouture.com and still only has our first range from last summer on it which goes into stores for this summer! / / Breathing hard:My running buddies won the Oxfam 100km race in under 13hours. / we’re just getting our team together for the Sydney to the Gong ride in November so we all have to wear our butts in our our cycle saddles as this’ll be 3-4 hours on the road on a hard seat. Dropped my girls to some friends over at Mosman, so i went for a run around Sirius cove/zoo/Clfton Gardens and back along the bush tracks which have been graded and lovely boardwalks all the way….very civilised for all the Genteel folk of that area (don’t want bush tracks to be, well, you know, like rough!) and the views of the harbour, city and ferries are just so inspirational i want to start painting them right away…but, no…have other work to get thru first. Stimulation: had 2 coffees today, oh it feels good! Went to art exhibition last night with my girls @ Manly Art Gallery and…well….absolute shite! Never been to a showing where it all stinks, nothing worth more than a cursory glance. The Gallery itself is a really nice space, the band they had playing was fantastic but Red Bubble is SO much more rewarding for time spent looking. I was told there’s a 6month waiting list to exhibit there but i think i may go and talk to the director and get the low down. George Miller was opening the Arts Festival but he had people around him all the time so you can’t just go and meet him. My girls didn’t like Happy Feet so i didn’t want him to meet them in case they told him! They’re very honest. Listening; really like the new Angus and Juilia Stone, such pretty music.Heard Beautiful Girls live on JJJ the other night and it was great. There’s a new Cat Empire album due out and looking forward to that as i really like their music and creativity. Now; i gotta sew!

  • Drawing Day - expose yourself on definatalie.com!
    by Natalie Perkins

I’m trying to start a cross promo between my blog..

I’m trying to start a cross promo between my blog, Drawing Day 08, the fabbo people who read my blog and those of you who haven’t yet jumped across to definatalie.com from RedBubble. Drawing Day is launching this year on June 7th, and basically all it entails is gettin’ your draw on and uploading your drawings somewhere. There is a flickr group that I’ll be watching in particular, and from there I’ll be choosing the best submissions to showcase on definatalie.com. I want to give some more exposure to Red Bubble artists in particular, so I’m imploring all of you who read this entry to get involved! On June 7th, draw your arm off, scan your drawing and upload it to either RedBubble, flickr or your favourite image hosting service. Then, come back to this entry or pop over to my Drawing Day blog entry and post it. This is a great opportunity to get some exposure in the blog world and entice people back to your RedBubble page so you can build up a ginormous fan base, sell heaps of prints and become world famous with a personal Lear jet. Or, you know, just sell a few prints ;) If you would like to follow my blog, it’s super easy to do in an RSS reader like Google Reader, which is my favourite way to read the hundreds of blogs I follow. If you’ve got a gmail account, it’s as easy as setting it up and then adding my feedburner url.

I write this as a testimonial to the wonderful RedBubble website. With some time on my hands between jobs and an old motorcycle doodle composed in MS Paint, I googled “t-shirts” and ran across the site. Immediately impressed by what I saw and the apparent ease with which members could participate, I signed up. That was around two months ago and since then my stuff has been viewed by almost 1800 people and I have been favourited by and received comments from countless others. / / In the process I have witnessed such astounding talent and creativity in art, design, photography and writing that I do not hesitate to say that RedBubble has amassed one of the greatest creative communities on the planet. Community is the key word on RedBubble as the camaraderie and supportive communication between members is one of it’s great strengths. In it’s short life, this networking has led to some fantastic collaborations and produced some magnificent and substantial work. Another of RedBubble’s great strengths is the inclusive nature of the community. It provides inspiration and a non-judgemental outlet for anyone to express themselves where their work can happily sit alongside others that may grace the galleries and libraries of the world. Profile pages reveal that whether providing encouragement for a troubled soul or simple inspiration for a lapsed or hesitant artist, the site’s value as a means of expression is immense. From a pure sales and marketing point of view, RedBubble is a powerful tool. As an exercise, I linked a couple of YouTube videos to my profile page, one in a sort of cross-promotional way tied to a t-shirt. In under a week two videos had received over 100 hits and another linked to the page for fun has had over 250 hits in less than a month compared to 1200 in the previous year. All this with minimal networking and membership of a handful of groups. The mind boggles at the potential to reach a large number of people with a more formal strategy and the simple, user-friendly nature of the site enhances this. / This sadly has not translated into sales but the ball has been firmly placed into my court. As an amateur that has not progressed beyond free software, my sales are probably in proportion to my talent and training but the level of interest and the exposure gained is both astounding and inspirational. / / This returns us to the essence of RedBubble. Inspirational and fun. In my short time on the site I have met some great people from all over the world and the forums have provided some interesting and sometimes hilarious banter. Some of the challenges have produced work of an amazing standard and further highlights the talent that has emerged from artists young and old within the ranks. They are too numerous to mention individually but I have no doubt some RedBubble members will go on to form our next generation of great artists, designers and authors whose work will live on through the centuries. A t-shirt revolution may be on the cards but a RedBubble revolution is already under way. Thank you to all of those who have made this such an enjoyable experience and be sure to keep on bubbling away.

Ladies and Gentlemen, your indulgence is craved, that you might – when convenient to yourselves – pass by the Time Lapse – Long Exposure Photography challenge that was held by the Calendars R Us group. For let it be known that my timelapse image Pop! came fourth. This is a mighty achievement – gladitorial I might almost say – considering the fantastic competition. View the entries, my dear friends, for this small action shall reward you time and time again. Time, as they say, waits for no man (or woman or hermaphradite) but as this challenge shows, you can half stuff around with it to get some wizard snaps!

Thanks to the Toys and Puppets for featuring Red Planet, which is my latest submission. That now puts 2 of my pics featured on their main page! Kids just don’t play with marbles anymore, it’s kind of sad that all those old fashioned games may eventually go extinct due to the WII and other modern technology. Even the old jumping rope songs and other games are slowly being forgotten, unless you teach them to your kids. I remember we could spend countless hours outside playing, in the heat of summer only going in to eat lunch and you always hated to be called in because you were afraid you would miss out on someting with your group of friends. Then the parents would begin calling the kids in at dinnertime. We spent ALL DAY outside! We even learned that certain rocks could draw on the sidewalks when we didn’t have any chalk. How will kids today learn to be nostalgic over playing video games inside all day and watching tv? Today I am going out armed with my camera. Harsh sun or not – unfortunately in Texas only up until 30 minutes after dawn and 1 hour before and after sunset are the only good times to shoot for light. The rest of the day is blinding sun, which can be a challenge to not having my pictures washed out or underexposed. But then what is life without challenges. I’ve taken every friday off (my boss tries to make me feel guilty every week for it too but nope) for the next month, so off I go! Happy photo taking

  • Secrets Behind The Stars - Jeff Burns Exposed

I’m sure many of you are aware of a chap named Jeff Burns and are very glad to see him back around on the Bubble in full force. I have been investigating his sabbatical from the Bub and have some shocking revalations to share with you all. Jeff’s old avatar looked like this shot: I then discovered by posing for the same shot That Jeff Burns was actually only 2 foot 8 inches tall! He worked at the secret hide away chocolate factory of Wally Winker situated behind the Giant Eagle in Ohio. Jeff worked with all the other Oompa-Loompas and Lepricorns But this was just what he did for a living, it was not his downfall. His downfall came when he picked up his first IR lens. I’ve seen IR shots, Naomi Frost does them to perfection Cool as ice and soothing. Jeff unfortunately ordered his IR over the internet and when it arrived in the post he read the address label… JEFF BURNS / In a small box under the tree / Ohio In his excitement he didn’t realise it was his name but thought it was an order. So Jeff grabbed his matches and set fire to everything, shouting Jeff Burns, Jeff Burns, i’m a twisted firestarter! The photographic results were amazing But the trail of destructiction made him a wanted man and he hid (which is very easy when you’re only 2 foot 8 inches tall) whilst things quietened down a tad. So he’s back As the little Gay Pirate in search of the pink bandana, making up for setting fire to everything by using his super powers To freeze water and pour it over the fires he’d previosuly started He’s also back as Bono from U2 in a vague attempt to look taller Here’s to you buddy, looking good

It was via another website, where he showed off these self-portraits, mainly taken in the Netherlands. / It may not be as daring, in the Netherlands, to take your clothes off and take a self-portrait, as it is in most other countries, but it still seem cheeky to me. / A kind of a Puckish activity. / / I have based a painting on Ike’s activities before and I entered that in the Inspired by Rembrandt competition, in 2006. / Ike knew about that and wrote that he was flattered. / / As always, I am about 70% finished, painting this but putting it here, gives me a different perspective. /

  • Fixing Over and Under Exposed Images in Photoshop

Quite a few people think that Photoshop is not user friendly, and I suppose if you step in at CS4 I can understand that. Trying to learn all the tools etc., can be quite daunting, anyone who has been with Photoshop a while only has to learn the new additions that come out with each release. But I was thinking, long term users of Photoshop can make Photoshop seem daunting to beginners. They have had a chance to learn more and interesting things along the way, and have ways of doing things that suit how they like to work, which aren’t always beneficial to a beginner. With that in mind, I thought we’d take a little step back to the simple ways of doing things. Things that take a couple of strokes on the keyboard and if they don’t work – so what – no time wasted really and more often than not they do work, or at the very least, get the image in a good starting place to continue working on. I had a little waffle:) So lets get started. The practise image is brought to us by Arif Imam over at StockExchange, you can find it HERE I have resized the image. The image is a little bit underexposed, lets fix it. Duplicate the background layer and change the blend mode to Screen – Keyboard shortcut – duplicate b/ground Ctrl + J – Change the blend mode from normal Shift + press the plus key till you come to Screen. Not quite bright enough yet ..Ctrl + J to duplicate the layer again – a little too much perhaps, press the number 5 on the keyboard and it will drop the opacity of the layer down to 50% .... try 1, 2 , 3 etc., to get 10, 20, 30 % You may want to bring out a bit more colour in his black shirt – Ctrl + J to duplicate the layer – Hold down the Alt key and then click on the mask icon at the bottom of the layers to reveal a black mask (hide all) , grab a white brush and paint over the shirt. To see how far you’ve come Hold down the Alt key and then click on the eyeball next to the original b/ground layer – Alt click again to bring back the changes you have made. Could it get much easier than that ! You can see my layer stack in the image below. There is another very simple way of doing the same thing without increasing the size of your file i.e. when you duplicate the layer. With the image open click on the create new fill or adjustment layer at the bottom of the layers – pick layers or curves or whatever. Do not change any of the settings, click OK – change the blend mode of the adjustment layer to Screen. Same result. Where you will find this way of doing that procedure incredibly useful is when you start fixing up the old family photos, or someone comes to you and says ‘can you fix this’ and you’re thinking to yourself ‘you don’t need me, you need god to fix that’ :) but it will be with an opposite problem i.e. over exposed or faded images. So, thanking lock-e over at the StockExchange site HERE I have resized the image for this tutorial. Open layer, duplicate layer, change blend mode to Multiply …... boom! With this particular image there is still a problem with the blown highlights – easy to fix :-) Open up a selective colour adjustment layer, from the drop down menu choose Whites, make sure that Absolute is checked at the bottom of the dialogue box, move the yellow slider to about 5% (image dependant) and there you have it. You can see how this method would be useful with a faded photo, and using the adjustment layer with no settings, and a multiply blend mode, if you had to try and bring back a really faded photograph – the size of the image can be kept under control i.e. doesn’t add any extra MB’s to it. If you use this method to fix faded photos remember only to watch the bit/s of the image that you are trying to recover, using a mask to reveal the adjustment on that particular part later on. Have fun!

It’s already happened. And perhaps my fearing it facilitated the occurance, my thoughts going there just often enough. The first two weeks on this job, I had a lot of dreams about getting a needle stick, getting a disease, blood, sick people, crying babies …. all kinds of weird dreams. And I’m really not all that neurotic (though I think a few folks might contest that! ha ha) Our thoughts are real and can easily become things…......... who knows. But it’s done now. On Sunday, about 6:30 am, I was doing morning rounds in the hospital, knocking on doors, waking poor sick people up to poke them with needles and take their blood. I had entered a young man’s room, was getting him ready for his blood draw, looking around at him wondering what he was ‘in for’, didn’t see any casted limbs, but he did not look like he felt good. He coughed a few times. Then, my coworker comes in, with a mask over her face and says softly ‘Hey Jenny, come on out, I need to talk to’. What?!! Apparently his nurse failed to post the required notice on his door, stopping all who enter from going in without a mask, to prevent being exposed to Influenza A. Yup. That’s right, this young man had Influenza A, which can be Avian, Swine, Whale, Seal and a couple of other kinds of flus. (Never heard of Whale or Seal flu, have you?! ha ha) Great. Needless to say, I had to write up an event report, the nurse will probably be in a bit of trouble. Actually probably more than a bit, that’s really a HUGE mistake to make in a hospital. That could have spread literally all over the hospital since I go all over the hospital. Our employee health and infection control officer brought me Tamiflu to take prophylatically. I’m not excited about that. It makes me feel sick, that’s among the side effects, flu-like symptoms. Yay. I may not continue taking it and switch to some powerful herbs my doc is recommending instead. Already not a huge fan of much of the whole alopathic medicine field in the first place, it’s really quite ironic that I find myself working in that setting and then having this exposure. I’m not really all that worried (though it seems my subconscious is! ha ha) about actually having Swine flu though. I’m a normal, healthy, not too old! woman. My immune system is not compromised. But it does not bode well that within the first 5 weeks of my employment I’ve already had a health risk situation come about. Crap! Never a dull moment…........... :o) I’ll let you know if I start barking like a seal or growing really really big! ha ha ha

AND USING IT! A couple of weeks ago I went out on a shoot with my buddy Nick, and managed to leave the holder for my Lee ND grad filters in the back of his car. I didn’t get a chance to get it back before I left for the roadtrip, so being the lazy person I am, I decided I’d just hand hold the filter if I needed to use it. pffft… Both of these images are straight from the camera, since I shoot med jpg and raw. This is what happens when I get too lazy….handling camera bag, tripod, camera AND filter, on a rickety pier…..I decided it was just too hard…. / So here’s the image without the filter….and most of the other shots I took that evening were as useless as this….also because I’d upped the exposure to +0.67! Sheeesh….check your screen Mel!!! Since I managed to settle into one position for a few seconds, I grabbed the filter, since I knew it WOULD make a difference….and I STILL hadn’t realised I was shooting two thirds of a stop over-exposed…...sigh….the filter at least has managed to help capture some detail in the sky…. / The moral of the story, don’t pay any attention to the idea that I might know what I’m doing here…...LOL
