  • Horseshoe Bend is the name for a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River located near the town of Page, Arizona, in the United States. It is located slightly downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell, about four miles or 6 km south of Page. Accessible via a 3⁄4-mile (1.2 km) hike from U.S. Route 89, it can be viewed from the steep cliff above, forming a spectacular vista. / This image is actually made of 4 pictures taken with my Canon 20D – 17-40mm L lens and stitched together to create this panoramic

  • Wasteland Warriors Logo

  • Looking out to the nearby industrial plant from a derelict office building

  • One of my first picture taken over the week-end with the 1Ds Mark III. The dynamic range of this camera is simply unbelievable…

  • Here you can see that this corridor has been quite badly damaged by fire, as well as some of the doors being pulled of their hinges. I think given another two or three years and this section of the asylum will not be standing, at least not for the most part.

  • I was gob smacked to walk around a corner at this hotel / hospital to find this magnificent marble staircase waiting, the opulence of this thing was amazing. Even looking at these shots now i can think of other shots i should have done while i was there.

  • Simply everything about this shot impresses me with how ornate it is, the ceiling, the chandelier, the granite and marble stairs, the windows and the arches, its all just amazing. Seldom is it that you find stuff like this in a derelict that has not been stolen or broken, a truly wonderful find.

  • photo taken at the isle de gavriotas communicable disease hospital. / more of my work is at www.abandonedamerica.org

  • I love how overgrown this main entrance to the stately home has become, with grass and moss completely taking over the steps and starting to take hold on the ornate stonework around the door.

  • All photographs are there to remind us of what we forget… In this, as in other ways… they are the opposite of paintings… Paintings record what the painter remembers… Because each one of us forgets different things, a photo more than a painting… may change its meaning… according to who is looking at it…. / John Berger There are actually 3 levels along this portion of the McCloud River in the Shasta-Cascade region of Northern California… a Lower, Middle and Upper Falls… obviously by my caption of this shot… you are viewing Middle Falls. The hike is very scenic back to the Falls, and not overly crowded either. It was like having our own private little waterfall both times we visited this area, as we had the place literallly to ourselves….

  • My soul is full of whispered song; / My blindness is my sight; / The shadows that I feared so long / Are all alive with light. / ~Alice Cary, Dying Hymn photo taken at isle de las gavriotas / more of my work is on www.abandonedamerica.org

  • I spent last week in the wilderness, backpacking through the inner depths of the Grand Canyon. A small side trail led to “Ribbon Falls” from Bright Angel stream on the North Rim. So I went. The place was a magical oasis in the hot and arid desert. I photographed for an hour and then left. I was not satisfied. I had to return. Several days later with sore feet and eager to begin my 4000 foot climb out to civilization, I passed this side trail again and went in for a second look at the falls. The sun was different, and so was the mood. I “felt” the place much better this time and “let the picture take me” this time. I like the result.

  • Often when an explorer has other explorers visiting from other parts of the country, he will be asked to give a bit of a guided tour around the local derelicts. This shot is taken at one of my local asylums that I have been round tens of times, but always still offer people a guided tour because it continues to turn up wonderful shots like this, even after all this time.

  • Somone left in such a hurry that they even left their shoes behind here. Elsewhere in this asylum there was cloakrooms still with loads of patients coats and scarves in as well.

  • A spectacular flowstone formation dwarfs a cave explorer in an enormous stream cave in western Thailand. The cave, Tham Lum Khao Ngu, is located in a National Park of the same name in Kanchanaburi Province west of Bangkok. The lighting is natural sunlight filtering into the cave from an upstream entrance and a karst window downstream. The caver is in the picture to give the formation scale. The picture was taken with a Nikon FM2 set on a tripod with shutter release cable and an exposure of about 2 seconds, using Kodachrome film.
