James sent me this quote this morning – and it struck a chord. “We live in a society where difficult things are increasingly left to experts and specialists. So people take vacations to New York City to see the great art, buy CD’s to hear the great performances, subscribe (occasionally) to PBS to watch Masterpiece Theatre – and at a glance it all seems entirely positive, even virtuous. Yet that all-too-easy access to perfection comes at a steep price: the loss of individual participation in the arts. In an era where the media confer fame early, instantly, and fleetingly, the opportunity for the measured development of one’s art is the first casualty. And beyond that, how many artists have the reslience and personality to see their still-developing work placed in driect compettion with the legends in their field? Not many. The net result is that we have become a society composed almost entirely of audience. This is unhealthy, both individually and collectively. Artists need to feel they have the support of the community in their artmaking efforts – if not for what they have already achieved, then for the potential they represent. Artmaking is too important to reduce to a spectator sport. We can’t afford to leave artmaking to a chosen few – the few are not enough.” Ted Orland
This is a shot of a Lancer preparing for a sharp bend downhill in the Experts Cup Rally last year in Collie. Note how sideways the car is, so he can flip the car around with speed. This particular day was very wet, however, the heavens seemed to dry when my camera came out. I went out with my Dad on this excursion. One car didn’t quite make the turn, but stopped just in front of him. All part of the excitement of the whole event.
The title is no exaggeration! This bloke was incredible! I spotted him whilst on one of my autumn sunset walks along the Town Green, on south bank of the Hastings River in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. All I said to him was, “G’day mate.” and he launched off into an informal lesson in the art of flathead fishing. I was there for about half an hour following him as he worked the shallows, making about twenty five shots as he plied his line and as the sun was setting. In all that time he kept me enthralled with hints, tips and little anecdotes about his approach to fishing for these tasty fish. Not only did he know his stuff but he was all decked out with all the gear. He is a real conservationist who only uses biodegradable hooks and lures and only keeps enough for a feed. He told me that flathead can either be hooked around the mouth or they suck the whole rig into their gut. He releases the ones which are caught around the mouth but keeps the others as they would die anyway. He really knows his stuff and fished the tidal river weed beds expertly. / I hope to catch up with him again one day. What I really like about the final result is the well defined partial silhouettes, the composition, the warm sunset colours and the rower, fishing boat and interesting background in the scene. This photograph was made with my old workhorse Mr Fuji, a Fuji S5500 4Mp camera and was processed in Photoshop CS. Find out more about Fishing in Port Macquarie if you wish.
