Life in Stonetown Zanzibar is connected through a warren-like system of ancient alleyways
... That’s what tourists do… They form a fleet of gondolas… Fun to watch and great for taking pictures – They even have traffic jams with the gondolas. Quite hillarious ;) Edit: Thanks to Earthjammedia, I changed titles :c) I like his allusion to the Rush Hour in the comments :D Fits the picture, too!
I personally love the blue, and how the background is actually seen inside the glass… I hope it actually comes well out on screen as well :D
The mask I bought from Flavia (www.veniceatelier.com) – I also bought the dress there, shown on another picture.
Venice, Piazza di San Marco Shot with a Canon T90; I used ISO 400 Kodak B&W Film. It was taken early in the morning (roughly around 4:30 am) before the sun came up. I put the camera on the steps surrounding the Piazza as I lacked a Tripod. Unfortunately I forgot what exposure I had, what Aperture, etc. ... Should have written it down :c) ... / Anyways :D Enjoy it (P.S. I did not straighten the image on purpose, as I like the crooked angles in all the picture).
Shot with Canon T90; Kodak Film ISO 400 :c) / I placed the camera on the ground and had it on slow shutter speed. We pretended to have some breatcrumbs and waited for the pigeons to gather around us. Once they were there, my friend clapped loudly so they would sore. I pressed the shutter, right into the pigeons. / I hadn’t completely focused on the buildings, more on the pigeons in the foreground, meaning, the buildings aren’t tack sharp – in the beginning, this picture was more an accident, but now I actually think it works better that way as it adds to the seemingly chaotic motion of the birds :)
This man Pablo, brought me to his home in Taquile Island in the middle of lake Titikaka, He is a part of the “Aymara” a native ethnic group in the Andes and Altiplano regions of South America; about 2.3 million live in Bolivia, Peru, Northern Chile, and Northwestern Argentina. They lived in the region for many centuries before becoming a subject people of the Inca, and later of the Spanish in the 16th century. / The Aymara have existed in the Andes in what is now Bolivia (and, to a lesser extent, Peru) for over 2,000 years, according to some estimates. It is most likely that the Inca had a strong influence over the Aymara region for some time. Though conquered by the Inca, the Aymara retained some degree of autonomy under the empire. There were a number of ethnic groups which were later to be known Aymara by the Spanish. These were divided upon different chieftaincies. Upon arrival of the Spanish, all these groups were spread in what today is Bolivia. / Most present day Aymara-speakers live in the Lake Titicaca basin beginning in Lake Titicaca through Desaguadero River and into Lake Poopo (Oruro) also known as the Altiplano, and are concentrated south of the lake. The present urban center of the Aymara region is El Alto, a 750,000-person city near the Bolivian capital La Paz. / The native language of the Aymara is also named Aymara; in addition, many Aymara speak Spanish, which is the dominant language of the countries in which they live, as a second language. Acrylics & oil pastel on canvas 2008 Copyright. All Rights Reserved to Mariam Muradian. This painting was directly inspired by one of the visions I had in the Native American “Deeksha” Healing/Blessing on New Year’s Eve. My eyes were closed. / I saw penetrating yellow light pouring and radiating out from behind my eyes. I was able to see things in a “Maxfield Parrish way” again. Now consider from whence I have come….. August 2006 I was given a drug to assist my heart; helping to end 40 years of continual “heart attack magnitude” chest pain and to keep me from slipping in and out of consciousness. It was a new, still somewhat experimental, drug on the market….aka “expensive”. In January 2007, after my 13th heart surgery, the drug was increased to get me past a difficult recovery. I began having elevating pressures in my eyes and pain like knives inside my eyes. Very rapidly I lost my peripheral vision, my color vision, and my central vision. My eyes had become extremely light sensitive; I was given the darkest glasses. This was in the middle of painting The Genetic Bill of Rights Painting Series. I had to sort my colored paints into shades of grey (which I fell into quite naturally from my formal art training); I continued to paint in color even though I could not tell you what color it was, apart from some incredibly intuitive color vibrations I would get; sometimes I could even hear the color. The signature piece of that series was painted when I had only a sliver of vision remaining in my left eye. / Because I had so little sensitive vision left, the Blind Society deemed it unreliable and trained me blindfolded. I painted the signature piece 80% blindfolded. It was a beyond trippy time for me!!! During this whole loss of vision, I had the Blind Society coming to my home to train me in skills and navigation. I was taught to use a blind cane. I learned to type and use voice recognition software. I was learning to cook by sound. One day I set out to get the mail: I was gone for two hours, had fallen into a bush, and returned with no mail in hand! I was so overwhelmed and challenged. After much painful testing, it was decided that the new drug was the cause of the blindness. I was left with a lousy choice and no guarantees from the medical community. In October 2007, I found myself a long way from home, down a road that I didn’t like nor was I sure I could reverse, go back to the fork in the road, and choose again. Morphine and the runaway bobsled to hell! So I stopped the drug! I began Chinese Tong Ren. / Miraculously, my sight returned, color too! My peripheral is still not as it was before the drug…..whose complaining?!!! Painting is like candy to me now; I was born with the gift, but now it means even more! My mind and soul are still playing catch up with all that happened. I do not understand the “taking” or the “giving back” of it all…..maybe it is for the comfort of others? I suppose the worst way to come away from such a trial would be with a “metaphorically myopic soul”? (I would like to hear your comments on my last statement, please. Write.) What we see can be such a distracting illusion to the essence of what is really there. Oddly, sometimes I miss the darkness. I remember the lessons of the darkness. As my Father would say, “I have made the circumference.” / Gratitude does not even begin to cover it!.... ~Mariam Muradian See the other paintings in this series! /

I have always loved this photo of my daughter – to me, it depicts the wonder years of childhood, when the world is filled with amazement and beauty, with the pure joy of experiencing life. I have tried various effects on the photo, but was never quite happy with the results. I have now finally decided to convert it into a sepia-toned sketch – hope you like it!

MUCH BETTER VIEWED LARGER Ok, its hard but someone has to live here, this is my neighbourhood, just a short trip from my front door . I opened my window just before dawn this sunday looked up the coast and saw that hint of colour, that mix of the right type of cloud, its funny after practicing landscape shots you tend to be a bit of a weather person. Got to love it when mother nature puts on her best makeup. Palm Beach is at the tip of the penisula about 40 kilometres from the Sydney CBD, by car or bus, Sydney’s northern beaches are stunning. A great place for a swim , a seafood dinner a cold beer or a glass of Chardonnay.., and yes it is used for movie and television series The headland in the distance is Barenjoey which is topped by historic Barenjoey Lighthouse Technique: HDR 5 Exposures bracketted, , processed in Photomatix and Capture NX. BEST VIEWED LARGER If ever a place could be haunted this would be the place, now a historic site this site was a place of suffering and isolation ‘ Port Arthur was a prison, or convict settlement, from the…from 1830 through to 1877. It started off as a small logging camp, but in 1833 was expanded to become a full penitentiary. The main penitentiary is the building in the foreground, which was built later on. At its height, Port Arthur had about 1,600 convicts here, so it was a very large place. The convicts themselves – all men – actually described Port Arthur as being hell on earth. “They broke men’s spirits,” that’s their quote. I would say, simply, they drove a lot of men mad. Very unpleasant place. The site was self sufficient and could provide most items the prison needed. Easily the most imposing ruin on the site, the Penitentiary began its life in 1843 as a flour mill and granary. In 1857 it was converted into a penitentiary capable of housing over 480 convicts in both dormitory-style accommodation and separate apartments. Also containing a messroom, library and Catholic chapel, the penitentiary was flanked by the Watchmens’ Quarters, as well as a range of workshops and an ablutions complex. Gutted in the 1897 fires, the building lay derelict until a concerted conservation program began in the 1960s.
