Vibrant pink lotus flowers with bright green pads and pods painted in a stylish, creative composition

This is one of the main temples in Vang Vien, Laos. The temple buildings are beautifully ornate and the surrounding garden is peaceful. On this day however, a number of the monks were busy conducting repairs on the building and, the younger ones especially, were scouting in and out of the windows and up and down the ladder as part of their work. They held a group of us captivated, cameras in hand, with their cheeky expression and playful teasing. I loved the strong contrast of the orange robe against the pink building – I think the colours capture the playfulness of the atmosphere even more than the monk’s expression in this case.

Higgins This exotic poem, with it’s imagery of apple tea, and harems of delight, personifies the abstract vision of the painting…the Delicious Apple encased in Ochre…Janis Sipping apple tea and sucking sweetened fingers, / standing by the stall and making my selection; / spices colour-collaged like love, cloves and ginger, / barrelfuls of nutmeg, carpets of peppercorn / elma çay and lokum. Pink mouthfuls, succulent and stacked like building bricks, / construct sweet marbled, sandstoned walls and terrasses cross the bazaar. / The bright gilt teapot, as intric ate, bizarre, / Byzantine as silk and attar, as elma çay and lokum. is tipped again. I sip. / Pink, green, yellow, ochre blocks of nut and syrup, / packed in boxes and tied with minaret-thin ribbon, / and served with sugared cups of apple tea – / squishy harems of delight: / elma çay and lokum.
