Admin Dave was so excited after yesterday receiving his first black Tee he had to stop deconstructing perfectly good Mac notebooks (see chair), and we ended up with a real case of life (poorly) imitating art. We couldn’t get him to take the sunglasses off, in fact no-one has ever seen his eyes, we’re not sure if they are like the mechanical, evil red ones from the Terminator, or a lovely baby blue. Modelled here is the wonderful black version of ‘Wound-Up’ by Scott Robinson AKA Resisto . - John

Got home today, to find the Leica sitting on my door stop (thank goodness no one came walking past). I can’t believe it made it here so fast, so credit to the RB team well done guys. It was well wrapped and took a good 10 minutes to remove from it’s bubblewrap safehaven. Katie took a few shots of the remove process, but since the house isn’t clean they have been censored out (lol). But she did take a few of my getting aquainted with my new baby and things got pretty intense from the outset. It’s a gorgeous little beast. So after a few snaps were taken I took it into my Den for a introductory photoshoot, no I don’t have film yet so I couldn’t use it, it was the Leica doing the modeling :) Hope you don’t mind me sharing a few of my images with you, and again a HUGE thanks to the RB staff, Brian Murray and everyone here! (And I don’t even have a rubber duckie for it to pose with!). Cheers, / Craig Craig obligatory cheesy grin, Canvas on the wall (yes yellow walls eek), card and the gorgeous Leica in hand. / It was Love at first sight, a deep mechanical magnatism / The Photoshoot begins (strobist style) / Isn’t it cute ? / “Come on, smile for the camera!” / Ok then just one more! /

  • Egypt Tour next Jan-Feb
    by Craig Goldsmith

I can’t whip the smile of my dial, hehehe! Oh and dont’ forget my discount Fire Sale I’m really excited to share this news but over the last week, my wife has decided to send me on a trip to Egypt for a 15 day tour. One of our friends had mentioned in passing he was going to be doing a Egypt tour alone, and my wife had a brain wave and within a few days had all the flights booked so I’ll be travelling with my mate checking out some great sites which include the Pyramids, Sphinx, Alexandria, Luxor, Kom Ombo, Awan, the Red Sea. I’m pretty excited, a little bit scared, but overal excited at a great opportunity. I’d love to hear from anyone who’s been before, any tips, suggestions etcs While the tour is pretty well defined there are some stages where we can do our own thing. I’ve decided I’m going to have to start some training and get a bit fitter before I go, as I’m sure the heat will knock me around a bit. If you can’t tell I’m almost dancing a jig right now imagining it, I’m sure I’ll have a great time, I really hope I can capture some great photos while I’m there. Thanks everyone and again, check out my sales if you haven’t! Craig

Ok guys so it’s Christmas. It’s my turn to say thanks to everyone on RB who’s supported me with great comments this year and especially those who’ve bought stuff from my folio. I can now officially say between RB and a US based site I am more than half way towards paying for a nurse to be trained for one year with HEAL Africa in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Which is awesome. Keep buying though, we’re on the downhill run!! / Some of you might know I was profiled in a brilliant photographic magazine called / Photo Review Australia Well Don Norris the Editor has asked me to nominate another bubbler who deserves an article to be written about them and their craft. We are talking at least two pages of a national magazine! / The pressure’s too much there’s too many good artists here…so…. / here’s the deal… / It’s a competition. / I want you to post your one best photo here and a one or two paragraph story about it. Where it is, what it’s of. Why it means so much to you. That sorta stuff. Then I’m going to get Don to choose who he wants to interview. He will conduct the interview via Skype next week. / Guys Photo Review Australia is a great magazine. It takes photography and photographers seriously. It’s the best there is in this country (IMHO). They have a website if you’d like to check ‘em out. / So go for it. / National coverage! There will be runners up prizes too, once we work out what they are :) / All I ask in return is you look at my folio and if you like anything buy it!! All African shots proceeds to the mighty HEAL Africa!!!!!!!! You could be like the brilliant Giselle who very kindly and generously bought a calendar this morning. ON YA GISELLE!!!! And chuck in a prayer for HEAL Africa this Christmas. I got an email yesterday. It’s getting more and more dangerous. The staff have been told they are allowed to leave if they want. ALL of them continue to work with the public and militia in an attempt to introduce peace. / Thanks to RB too for letting me run this on the site.

Anyone who has shared a wine with me this last year probably knows I’ve been wanting a fringe and that I keep whimping out every time I go to get it done. Well, I finally worked up the guts to go through with it, mainly because I was in such good hands / Don’t worry Helen, I made sure it still works for 50s pin up stuff / Sassy the cat was all sour grapes because she didn’t get a new fringe too So yes, now I have a fringe. Not that you care :)

Did you know that every day over 5000 people walk through the doors of The Rialto Towers? / The Rialto Towers by Paul Villani – who is also the mastermind behind this idea. GO PAUL! Wouldn’t it be really cool if you could put your art in front of those 5000+ people every day for 2 weeks? That’s 5000 business people, tourists, people redecorating their homes, people with a 30 minute lunch break and nothing but blank walls to look at. And wouldn’t it be even cooler if that work was for sale and you could make money out of it? Well if you are in Melbourne or Victoria now you can. make with the clicky clicky / Fog 2 by James Price – who is not the mastermind behind this idea but is still very nice This crazy cool idea wsa thunk up by Paul with the help of his side kicks and co-conspirators Mark and Jo

With all the encouragement and inspiration received here at redbubble, and from my wonderful friends and family, I have jumped on the publication bandwagon and had a go at the Blurb machine! Today I am really happy to receive the first copy of my book and see what a fanstastic job Blurb have done. Wow…it looks so good! (dare I say it!) My initial thoughts were to produce this book as a professional portfolio that could be presented at the galleries I approach to represent my work, but having seen the quality of the finished product, and with the strong suggestions of those gallery managers who have now viewed it, I am intending to take it to a real publishing house in the city. Obviously doing a book this way is very expensive – the shipping alone is a major deterrent! But it fires up the creative juices and the imagination and truly lets you see just what you can do! And then show it to others! I would be honoured if you would check out a preview of my book, but in the meantime, thankyou to all my redbubble family for your wonderful support and friendship over the last year. It means more to me than you know! Hugs and smiles! Announcing the publication of a new hard cover book of my words and images (please note, bad timing on my part, the Blurb website will be out for maintenance on 18th july, so no previews will be available) /

  • Exciting human rights opportunity for photographers

6 August 2008 Call for entries: Submit your human rights photographs now The 2008 Human Rights Photography Competition is now open. The competition, which is being run in association with the Human Rights Medals and Awards, shares this year’s official UN Human Rights Day theme: ‘Dignity and justice for all of us’. “We’re searching for photographs that both reflect the theme of the competition – Dignity and justice for all of us – and provide a unique approach to a human rights subject,” said federal Human Rights Commissioner, Graeme Innes. “In reflecting the theme, an image might record a moment that celebrates dignity and justice,” said Commissioner Innes. “It might illustrate fundamental rights and freedoms being recognised, or it might simply capture an observation of what human rights means to the photographer and, for that matter, the viewer.” International Human Rights Day on 10 December 2008 marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The official theme supports the vision of the Declaration as a commitment to universal dignity and justice, and reinforces the fact that human rights are an inextricable part of our lives. The three categories for the 2008 Human Rights Photography Competition are: Under 18 (male), Under 18 (female) and 18 and above (age at 30 June 2008). Winners, highly commended and shortlisted entries in each category will be placed on the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission website and exhibited at the Human Rights Medals and Awards ceremony at the Sheraton on the Park Hotel in Sydney on 10 December. Winners will also be presented with their prize at the ceremony. Competition information: www.humanrights.gov.au/photo_comp / Ph: 02 9284 9618 Entries close: Close of business Friday, 31 October 2008 Prizes: Winners: $500 voucher at Digital Camera Warehouse / Highly commended: one year subscription to Australian Photography Magazine Awards ceremony: Wednesday, 10 December 2008, Grand Ballroom, Sheraton on the Park Hotel, Sydney Tickets to awards: Ph: 02 9284 9618 or hrawards@humanrights.gov.au / $65 or $40 concession. • Lots of Exciting News!!!

ooooh oooh… so much news to tell… but where to begin? I feel like a little excited kid who has so much to tell that he will never get it all out in any kind of coherent sentence and probably just end up wetting himself through all the excitement! Ok, so forget the wetting myself bit… I’m a grown adult and should be able to piece together a few sentences… so perhaps start with the most important news first! This is a biggun! Well… for anyone in the UK, you had better hold onto your hats because Tuppers is moving home! ... ...ok, so for those of you not in the know and wondering where that uncomfortable silence just came from, I’ll explain… After 7 years of living out in the desert world of Saudi Arabia building sand castles and palaces I have decided to hang up my arab garb, grab my umbrella and head for the green and pleasant land that I used to call home! I’m coming home, I’m coming home… Well, I’ve now got 3 months left of continuous sunshine to make the most of before I ship out, so if you dont see a lot of me about then you will know why… I’ve got a very bright future to look forward to when I hit the shores of England – lots to look forward to and lots of plans to make… With all that is going on I’m sure I will still find some time to grab my camera and rattle off a few pictures along the way… well, its what I do! So, for anyone in the UK maybe I’ll be seeing you at the next RB meet and for any of my Antipodean friends, I’m not moving further away from you because you all smell… honest! Ok, ok… so onto my second piece of news. I’m gonna get published! Woohooo! Yep, I received an email from the wonderful Hop the other day (the same day that I received my new job offer) explaining that my shot “Friendship” is going to be included in the Redbubble “Courage, Compassion and Friendship” Publication (wise choice of title on my part, me thinks…) Absolutely stoked about this as it will be my first published picture. No doubt I’ll be waiting with open wallet as soon as they roll off the press. So, what next? Oh yeah… also thrilled at being Featured the other day with my latest upload “On the Other Side” My thoughts behind this one were all about my pending return home and I was so happy with all of the thoughtful comments made on it… lots of smiles over here! So, there you go… lots of exciting news… well for me at least! I guess if nobody comments here then I will know that you switched off after the wetting myself bit and I should go back to school and swat up on my basic story telling skills! Well, its not quite over… but nearly! I would just like to leave you all with a little ditty. I’ve dabbled a little with my penmanship but I have to admit that I didn’t write this one… I just thought it quite apt for today. Thanks all, again and enjoy… “Happy Birthday to me / Happy Birthday to me / Happy Birthday to me-ee / Happy birthday to me!”

Some exciting news for those who prefer cotton as their canvas. We’ve just launched a brand new t-shirt competition with a prize so awesome, you’ll be desperate get your ink-stained mitts on it. The lovely folks at London street wear store Demo have fallen for the charms of the talented RedBubble t-shirt designers and they’ve asked us to run another design competition. So we’ve cranked up the random theme generator and we think it’s come up with a winner. The theme is ‘Sound’. That’s right, the stuff you can hear. It’s is open to wide interpretation so you could choose to cover anything from music through to cochlear implants. Demo head honcho Christian has volunteered to put on his Simon Cowell hat and pull his strides up nice and high and he’ll be picking a winner from a shortlist chosen by the community. If you’d like the chance to get your t-shirt design in the front window of Demo then head on over here for all the details. The winning t-shirts from our last comp are just about to go into the shop. We’ll be doing a post covering all the excitement, laughter and tears of joy direct from Carnaby Street shortly. In the meantime, dig out your finest art supplies and get designing. Nat

This evening was the opening night of the Bacchus Marsh Rotary Club Art Show and Sale which is held every year over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. This year’s event had an additional category, for photographs (although I have entered in the general media section for a few years and won a commended prize a couple of years ago). But this year, I won first prize in the photography section with my image In Another World. It’s the first time I’ve ever won an event in an art show, more specifically this one in my home town. There were almost 800 works of art in the show overall (although not sure how many in my category but a lot more photographs than in the past). It is such a huge honour for me and the feedback I’m getting from the local community even after only a few hours has been so wonderful. Here’s the image in question. / And here’s one of me at the show looking pretty flushed and stressed (as I do in large crowds) but still very excited. / A very big thank you to my Redbubble friends for their support, to Keryl who suggested this photo project in the first place, to my friends Sarah and Ana who encourage me and support my artistic endeavours, and Redbubble for providing me with the opportunity to reconnect with the creativity within. / xxx / (the prize money is wonderful and very much needed … now, fingers crossed that someone will buy my image)

In order to make the gathering of photos and compiling of the Urban Wildlife Book easier, I thought it might be good if I could find some suitable photo file sharing software. I have found something that gives us privacy and can handle large files. This is less cumbersome than sending stuff by email, where your file size might be restricted, and has the advantage of putting everything automatically in one place, making the management of hopefully many photos, a lot easier. / / It is called Memeo Share, runs on your desktop, and will enable us to create a ‘pool’. One advantage for you is that all those partaking can see what is going on at any time, and you can also view pictures as big as your monitor will allow. The key points I was looking for were: 1. Non restrictive, must be able to handle large files. / 2. Must be private. / 3. Must allow downloading of large image files. / 4. Must allow reasonable storage per user. Memeo Share seems to fit the bill. It is easy to use, allows every user 1GB of FREE storage and it can run on your desktop. I have created a private group within the software called “Urban Wildlife Book” and the easiest way to get into it, as it is by invitation only, is to just send me an email request for an invite. I have even written one out for you! Just copy and paste the message below in an email, and send it to pix@johnhootonphotography.com Hi John, / Please send me an invite for the free Urban Wildlife Book Sharing Circle software, so that I may more easily take part in our exciting project. You will then receive a Memeo Share invite email from me which will have a link, taking you to a page where you can download the software and be part of our Exclusive Sharing Circle. I really would like as many people in our group as possible to take an active part in this project. I really think it is going to be very exciting and at the end of it, we are going to have a world class book of superb photographs. Even if you don’t think you have any pictures yourself, submit them anyway, and take part by inviting others who may have some pictures you admire, and would like to see in the book. Spread the word! I will probably create a space somewhere in our Urban Wildlife Forum soon where I can publish all ongoing news and where you can comment and discuss the project. We can then keep all the written discussion in one place instead of scattered articles in my RB Journal. I will look forward to seeing some Urban Wildlife Book Sharing Circle invite requests in my pix@johnhootonphotography.com inbox soon! Kind regards, John

Last week I had the thrill of being offered my first solo exhibition. A solo exhibition was a long way from any of my plans, I could neither afford it, nor did I have the confidence to launch a whole selection of my work on the public in such a way of my own volition. However, the gallery where I volunteer (ArtGeo in Busselton) is for the second year in a row, the location for the renowned international event – Cinefest Oz French-Australian Film Festival and all the celebrations that go along with this huge event. Along with an Australian premiere of the movie Stone Bro’s and screenings of many new movies, there will be seminars, lunches, directors talks and events for VIP guests, all held around Busselton and at the gallery. The event coordinators requested a local artist to exhibit works to compliment the festival and the gallery invited me to accept this part. (with no charge for gallery fees) I was thrilled!! I have just learned in the last few days, that I will be now sharing my exhibition space with well known Noongar artist Troy Bennell – something which is an honour for me and I look forward to viewing his art in person instead of on websites! I have always been drawn to and honouring of local noongar culture and at times revealed this through my own artworks – Hopefully our offerings during this exhibition will compliment each others art and intent, and the film festival’s main event – the indigenous comedy “Stone Bro’s”. The exhibition will be part of the after party for visiting national and international film directors and stars….something which is truly exciting as this kind of exposure is beyond my wildest dreams. The exhibition will only be open for one week from 9th September, and will be open to the public also during that time (for details contact ArtGeo Gallery ). As you can imagine, with only two weeks notice to get a selection of my work printed and framed ready to hang in a gallery situation, I have been working hard to put together a quality submission. Having worked as a gallery assistant at ArtGeo gallery, I know of the hard work involved behind the scenes as well, but I know they will present a very professional exhibition and “package” to the visiting festival guests. All in all, an exciting week to look forward to! And so, I wanted to share this news with my close friends here at the Bubble as without your support, and encouragement, I would probably not have the courage to take this step and accept this challenge! So cheers to you!

Although i’m not usually too much of a fan of “blowing my own trumpet”, sometimes I think we have to do a bit of self congratulatory back slapping! / Over the last month, I have been part of a Welsh open studios event, by the name of Helfa Gelf, run in collaboration with the Welsh Assembly government and the Cambrian Academy of Art, among others. / I have also been selected as a contributing exhibitor at a local Gallery and Artists co-operative- Gallery 36. / Add to this, my new status as official photographer to a fantastic Burlesque performer and teacher Miss Scarlet Fever and being signed up as a freelance snapper for Majestic Model Agency and all in all-it’s been a fairly successful few weeks!!!!!!!! Now for the Oscar winners “thank you” speech. Since joining Redbubble, making friends with a fantastic worldwide community of supportive Artists, writers, photographers and all round good guys, I have grown both as a person and as an Artist, in my own right. Self confidence and self belief have grown and thanks to the continued support of my “network of buddies”, I now firmly believe that I really can do this, I really can actually make a living as a photographer and I really can live the life I was put on this earth to live. Thank you all, so much-my successes are as much a result of what you guys have done for me, as for what I have done for myself. Roy.
