”... for the times, they are a-changin’...” In With The New / It seems wholly appropriate to quote the masterful Bob Dylan for this, the latest edition of BubbleWRAP, because things are indeed changing. RedBubble is about creativity, inspiration and expression; about finding and re-igniting the secret passion you had when you were a child; about sharing your artistic endeavors and knowledge; about learning more and connecting with others; or simply being imaginative. Now, when RedBubble started out, we created BubbleWRAP as a way to connect our members and their stories – we would share with everyone what we found to be inspiring and noteworthy. Well now it’s time to turn the tables and hand over the reigns… that’s right – BubbleWRAP is now yours! We want YOU – the RedBubble Community – to drive the inspiration and creative content of BubbleWRAP. We want you to share with us everything that excites your inner child or anything that inspires your creative pursuits. They can be in any form that you find them, be it images or designs, stories or interviews, poetry or tshirts, quotes or collaborations – the list is endless. We want BubbleWRAP to become a showcase of your brilliance. This issue is the first attempt, so please support it and help us to improve the offering. Send any entries (such as image and tee reviews, member interviews or inspiring stories) to: / tom@redbubble.com Thanks must go to Sasufi, Evangeline, TBO & Danny for making this issue possible. Tom.

One aspect of RedBubble that has got little attention is where it fits in the development of art. Firstly a caveat, I probably only know just enough to be wrong. Ploughing on regardless, I believe RedBubble is part of a revolution in the artistic market. It is about the rediscovery that art can be embedded in the fabric of society rather than spread on top like a thin veneer of Vegemite. Since the Renaissance, art has been what a tiny elite produced and sold at vast prices to another tiny elite. The art world was open only to the wealth few and a cabal of elevated artists. I have been lucky in my life and have some of this art on my walls. I know it is art because somebody has told me it is and because it cost a smallish fortune. It bloody well better be art or I want my money back. But then, taking a deep breath, I look at what my children produce (or an even deeper breath, what I produce) and I understand that this elite view of art is only part of the picture. I know in non-Western societies art can be much more democratic – anybody can participate in the process. Australia’s Aboriginals maintain this capacity but they are not unique (I have seen a similar thing in Bali). There was a dream of many in the 19th century to return to democratic art. John Ruskin felt everybody had a right to beauty. But the technology has worked against such dreams. In the era of mass production, everyday art is uniformly bland. Ikea continues to churn out an art mediocrity that manages to insult both the artist and the purchaser. And so RedBubble. I feel the site is creating new artists and new art purchasers. We strive to deliver the highest quality and each work, while not unique, is certainly rare. Building a great collection of traditional art is beyond almost everybody’s reach. A great collection from RedBubble can easily be aspired to for a few thousand dollars. All the Bub’s art lacks (in general) is the imprimatur of art elite who tell us it is good. As for me, my RedBubble purchasers sit proudly beside traditional works and I will dare anybody to say which has intrinsically more value. Next week I am meeting with the Chairman of the National Gallery of Australia. We will see if he shares my views on the evolution of art. I will pitch him to try and get a RedBubble art installation, which I see as truly modern art, not just a change in the medium (or content) but a change in the very meaning of art itself. This is a change enabled by the power of the Internet combined with print-on-demand technology.

As of today, January 20th, 2008, there are 1797 days left until the Winter Solstice 2012. There are 1797 days until the completion of the current 26,000 year cycle of the procession of the equinoxes. 1797 days until the Age of Aquarius comes into being. 1797 days until the end of the Long Count Calendar of the Mayans, which is in total 1,872,000 days in duration. 1797 days until the Sun’s nearest alignment with the center of the galaxy occurs on the Winter Solstice, the first time in 26,000 years. 1797 days until the potential of simultaneous global spiritual illumination of the entire population of the planet occurs. 1797 days until the moment of the the Winter Solstice of 2012. 1797 days until the end and the beginning. 1797 days to December 21, 2012. Well what can I say? Life has been sooooooooooooooooo hectic of late that I have not written anything remotely amusing and that means that I miss laughing at my own jokes and that is a very sad state of affairs!!! So did we know that January 22nd is the saddest day in the Northern hemisphere? Or it might just be England. Ironically at work we came to the conclusion that we had all indeed felt like the weather was in fact over weight and had decided to sit on us… So the question is how do we get more cheerful? I put this to my fellow workers and we instantly found the answer. Compulsory office speed dating… Oh yes… We thought it was a great idea until there were objections from the married contingency… So we had to go back to the drawing board and I came up with a far more useful strategy to spend office time: office twister. I think that it should be a team building exercise… Then we came to the conclusion you could do speed twister… That is like speed dating with twister. Imagine how you could meet your future hubby… Although I guess it would be difficult to ask questions and not too fun if you didn’t like the person you were with. Oh well. Then I had a Michelle moment and concerned myself… Okay I have to share… Well I wondered if they played twister in nudist camps… Surely it’s not allowed, monopoly and travel connect four possibly, but not that. There must be rules about that kind of thing… Surely. So that was the beginning of twister dating and it will take the world by storm. I also evolved the idea of pole dancing to scaffold dancing which is far more elaborate and risky. Some of the girls in the office were concerned about their nails and the prospect of falling from a height. Shame. Then finally one of my colleagues, who will be speed dating next week, stated if speed dating doesn’t work she is going to join a convent. I informed her that she would be narrowing down her choices when it came to speed dating and that it wasn’t likely that she would meet anyone or get decent answers to her careflly scripted questions. I thought I would help here with the questions and came up with the a complex one to flummox potential dates. If you woke up next to me screaming, what would you be screaming and why? Good answer: Get the Taranosauraus rex out of the fridge and that would be shouted from the comfort of my own bed! So there we are… The solution to the feeling of sadness is come up with really random ideas to entertain yourself and then find a decent reason to be happy… Like chocolate is in existence. There we are: the food of the gods saves the day. Beautiful!!!

What’s been going through human history is a change in how we are evolving as a species. A familiarity with how natural selection and evolution work, paired with how progress tends to work (that is, exponentially building on itself), makes this theory quite easy to understand. For endless generations, humans evolved physically – running faster, hitting harder, growing taller – and defensively – building up resistance, strengthening of immunity, speed of rebound from illness, and so on. All these things were required to get by in the tough-love world of eat or be eaten and every man for himself (and family unit). Once humans had securely found a place among the other animals, we found that “many” were stronger than “one”, and began forming communities. Though they were crude at first, they began to grow more well defined. Working with others a new concept, humans began to also evolve in relational ways – interpersonal skills, language, tolerance, diplomacy, cohabitation. All of this was great, and the combined power of the masses made possible things to ease daily workloads which before the unity could only have been accomplished through god-like measures of individuality… Now here is where one might say the *hit hit the fan – that is, where we began reforming our 4×4 crossword into an 8×8, 16×16 (see the Crossword Metaphor for a different take on the same idea), more and more complex and farther and farther away from simplicity of purpose. In the Bronze Age, humans, seeing how easy things were with the help of these first tools and simple devices, started spending a lot of time thinking about new ideas, stretching their brain-wings so to speak. As we did this, evolution began concentrating itself on the mental as well as the physical, defensive, and interpersonal – problem solving, cause and effect, linear and spatial planning, the building of a process, et cetera. The issue with this new intellectual evolution was, that whereas the other forms of development had lived harmoniously with one another, this new brainpower preempted the need for the other three. Devices grew more complex, machines emerged, and then huge systems, all doing the work of thousands with no man power required. Evolution looked at this and realized, “Hey, they don’t need to be strong or tall anymore…” So we stopped evolving physically. Then it said to itself, “with science and medicine, there is less need for great resistance of body…” and so we fell behind in our physical defensive systems. Finally it said, likely out loud and exclamatory “well there is no need to associate with others… everyone just sits at home on a computer anyway (more recently, that is)” and so we have lagged in social growth. All this time where IS evolution’s energy being spent? Why on intellect of course, which happens to be abstract unlike the concrete nature of evolution in the wild. As humans began to fall behind in real survival of the fittest in the pursuit of “survival of the wittiest”, the ever so fallible and contradicting higher brain took over all pursuits. I’ll stop here and continue elsewhere… that’s enough for now

I have been using my tumblr page to document some of my art in progress as well as finished works. If you’re interested in following my tumblr posts, get yourself an account and follow me! Lots of creative people are using tumblr as a micro-blogging alternative to twitter simply because you can post pictures (as well as other nifty things, like quotes, conversations and links). There are people blogging about their art and design, but also images that are inspirational. I would love to find someway to adequately photograph/ scan my paintings to sell prints here on RedBubble, but it’s difficult because a lot of them are quite big and I don’t have the best lighting conditions here in our little cavern of an apartment.

So, I sort of hinted at the funk I’m in at the moment in my last journal entry. The truth is, I feel very creatively crippled right now. I have ideas that my skills can’t handle. My style is all over the place. I’m in a period of rupture and break. This is good, right? All artists and designers have to find themselves in this predicament every now and then and it pushes them into new territory – hopefully better and more successful territory for all the angst and self doubt. It’s a Big Deal that I’m opening this up to you guys, my peers and of course the lurking supporters of my work. Typically I am quite insular, fearing that if I open up about my worries that I might be seen as a failure or unsuccessful. No one wants to be that person. But this is the thing, right? This is a hurdle I need to leap over. If I can’t open up a dialogue with people who may well be experiencing the same issues, gosh I’m a pretty bad communicator and in turn, a poor artist. It’s the essence of what we’re doing, isn’t it?! So, I’m having trouble with style. My style. It feels like I’m dabbling in too many mediums and stretching myself all over them in a chaotic sticky jam like mess. If you want to, we can use this entry to talk about issues of style: how you found yours; if you’re on a quest to find it; or if you’re evolving from one style to another. This whole issue reminded me of an entry on madeit.com.au’s blog: Independent Designers & Developing Style. I’ll include a few examples from that entry here. / Audrey Kawasaki (USA) “Blueroom” – 1999 / Audrey Kawasaki (USA) “Karasaki” – 2008 / Stella Im Hultberg (USA) “Jolie” 2005 / Stella Im Hultberg (USA) 2008 / Lilly Piri (AU) “At The Gallery” 2004 / Lilly Piri (AU) “Monkey Arms” 2008 It’s quite amazing to see how these beautiful artists have grown.

So as you guys have seen, I love to doodle… and much of my art has it’s origins in my inky drawings which I scan into photoshop for transformation. They form part of my digital scrap book of potential ingredients for my art (along with a huge bunch of my random photos, textures, bits n pieces of color and shapes) It always surprises me how different the destination can be from the same starting place. I wonder if the drawings evolve in various ways, or if they are old ideas being recycled into something new. (Not that it matters, I’m having fun!) Here’s an example of what I mean… One of my personal fave sketchy-doodles: / Which has evolved into all of these… / 6-way / / double eye / / tower / / phoenix of summer / / gallop / / bird’s eye view t-shirt /

Evolution – I used the technique of zooming whilst taking a time elapse (t4) photo. I learnt this technige via the CCP, where I have commenced sudying photography. The subjects in the picture are a book on Charles Darwin, a card of a orangutan playing the guitar (birthday card from my daughter) and an AC/DC badge. The slightly cryptic message is the evolution of the orangutan to playing heavy metal music. The zooming has the effect of change over time, the essence of evolution. If you look closley you will see images of the items prior to and at the end of zooming.

With the recent MASSIVE upgrade to the appearance of Redbubble came yet another interesting modification: Tags need to be comma-separated now. Previously we simply wrote in all the words we wanted to associate with our artwork, calendars, articles and shirts. Now they have modified this to COMMA-separated values. EXAMPLE / Previously I pasted into the ‘TAG’ cell: / photographer stephentrepreneur stephen, mitchell portfolio gallery professional But now I have had to modify my generic tags to include commas: / photographer, stephentrepreneur, stephen, mitchell, portfolio, gallery, professional I mention this now because I am noticing both articles and uploads that are still using the old method of tagging. If you don’t modify your tagging right now, neither your articles nor, more importantly, your artwork will get noticed when people use the ‘SEARCH’ function to find styles they’d like to buy. Happy tagging!

for those who care? lol sorry I’m just bored :P / Well all but the girl shirts, still working on a new female model template to replace the old ones =] Here’s some examples: Kamikaze punk V.1 / revenge is tweet Ride the base wave: Ultimate edition / This is also my entry for the Music machines challenge CCCP Army / War Sticky bomb Gas mask Ride the bass wave: special edition these 7 so far for a sample t-shirt display, but I think it’s better looking than my last style, fair bit of vector work and playing around to get this final result, each with their own colour coded background to match the design colours, kind of a tech honeycomb style, with a fully new vectored shirt/model with subtle highlights, but I think it’s a good step in a more unique direction =], I will be slowly updating my older t-shirt sample displays too, maybe not all but my favorites at least, any feedback welcome Jay / R-evolutionGFX
