Albino rabbit hides in the flowers. / ... / Story: / Initially created for the Illustration Friday theme of Camouflage (June 22nd, 2007). As soon as I read the name of the theme, the picture popped into my head. The little guy at the bottom is my favourite – he’s really rockin’ out! / ... / Get the t-shirt here! / ... / Story: / Created on August 28th, 2006, this is the very first drawing I made with my new Wacom tablet. The tablet was a present for my 30th birthday. / ... / Recommended for: / Cards and small prints. Although medium and large print sizes are also offered, it is my personal opinion that this image is at its most charming in miniature. Taken May 5th, 2007 from Kalamunda, looking over Perth (which cannot really be seen, but the sunset is beautiful, no?)
This is exactly what it looks like – a sketch-doodle I made while listening to Pain’s Shut Your Mouth over and over again*, on the 11th of April, 2007. / ... / I’m not going to pretend that it’s art or design, but something about it really appeals to me; it’s like his heart has been SHOT out of his chest and he’s reeling from the impact. / ... / (Or I could be reading too much into it because I’m playing loud industrial music very late at night, and I’ve just had a weird tea that calls itself “Rooibos and Vanilla” but tastes like delirium.) / ... / * The Swedish industrial metal band, Pain, that is, not the American one. Shut Your Mouth is one of my favourite songs, and has a catchy riff that will stay in your head for YEARS. You can visit them on MySpace if you wish, but be warned, their lyrics contain some profanity. / ... / Dear buyers: If purchasing this image as a card (which is an interesting choice and I’m not sure what festive occasion it would be appropriate for), I highly recommend the WHITE backing colour, otherwise it will look like his legs have disappeared. / ... / Image quality: / The preview image to the left has been JPEG compressed by RedBubble for security purposes. Taken February 2007. A friend’s very friendly kitten-cat who was not quite grown up. He kept crawling into your lap and looking up at you. You wants to stroke the kitty? he seemed to purr. Resistance was futile.
Sometimes nature knows best. Story: / I swear, hand on my heart, that I found this leaf in the forest clearing where I was attending … a wedding ceremony.
Lovely Flora Mae is the belle of the ball! / ... / Would you like to see the Dark Wood version of this image? / ... / Story: / Would you believe I spent half an hour trying to find the right neckline for her dress? / Flounces? Frills? Empire neckline? A giant ruff? / Then I started doodling words for the caption, and voilà! / ... / Image quality: / The preview image to the left has been JPEG compressed by RedBubble for security purposes. What, you think that horn is just for decoration? / Beware, unicorns are also a symbol of truth. Tell a lie to a unicorn, and it will skewer you. =============== Please note that on dark t-shirts, the design will have a grittier, more reflective appearance, due to the greater amounts of ink used. If you are looking for a smoother effect, please choose a pale-coloured shirt. And of course, if you are not happy with the print quality, please contact RedBubble as soon as possible with a photograph of the print so that your issue can be resolved. Silly Gary, he’s just recovered from being impaled by a unicorn, and he STILL hasn’t learned his lesson. / ... / I haven’t drawn the next panel, but we all know it’s going to end like this. * / ... / * Links to PvP by Scott Kurtz. / ... / Dear buyers: I highly recommend the BLACK backing colour for this card. / ... / Image quality: / The preview image to the left has been JPEG-compressed by RedBubble for security purposes. Pirates Versus Ninjas – where it all began. I was wondering if this reference was too obscure, but then my brother walked past and exclaimed, “Cool! Ninja paramecium!” and I knew my work was done. P.S. I spent an hour drawing the gun that would be thrust through the pirate’s belt. Just when I had proudly adjusted it into place, a helpful passer-by remarked that the gun I had drawn was actually a derringer and not suited to the era* (a derringer is more of a Wild West gun). After I had finished disposing of his body, I then spent another hour drawing an old-fashioned pistol, which ended up in the final picture. See here for the difference. * Surprisingly, he had no problem with the concept of unicellular organisms wearing clothes. Which side would YOU be on? Pirate, or ninja? =============== Please note that on dark t-shirts, the design will have a grittier, more reflective appearance, due to the greater amounts of ink used. (title from 1990’s Matthew Sweet album) Another ceiling in the Worcester Cathedral, less ornate than the one in “Divine Intervention” (title from the same album.)

Winter is over, Spring is here. Weary Ant has gone to bed, and Grasshopper plays for the moon. / ... / Inspired by Aesop’s fable about the Ant and the Grasshopper, although I prefer the happy ending where Ant shares his food with Grasshopper, and Grasshopper plays for the ant colony every night in return.
This piece was inspired by my good friend, Emma, who is not only a well-known health researcher (oops, make that Dr Emma) but also the smart, funny woman behind the From Bud to Bub Pregnancy Calendar. / ... / If you know someone special who is expecting, please visit From Bud to Bub to get them a gift that is unusual and useful at the same time. I created this pen drawing in 1994, after watching a film on SBS called “Strange Fish”. It was all heady movement and dancing shadows. I remember little else about the movie, except that I was completely mesmerised by it. A day later, this drawing was the result. / ... / Note: The original drawing is A3 in size and has a lot of shading detail, which is a little hard to see in these previews. / ... / A close-up: /
Mid-late 1994, ballpoint pen. Curves were all that my pen wanted to draw that night.
Another piece from 1994. I drew this a little before Woman. / ... / Now, as silly as it sounds, I had a bit of an internal struggle as to whether or not I should upload this. Because, even after 14 years, I am still a teensy little bit embarrassed about this picture. / ... / A lot of my work back then was very free-flowing, similar to “stream of consciousness” writing exercises. I would spend hours peering closely at the sketchpad, furiously working in tiny detail, and then move onto the next bit, just following the lines, not looking at the big picture till I was finished. / ... / So you can imagine my dismay when I rubbed my eyes, sat back, and looked upon this picture as an entirety. There was a slight pause while my eyes refocussed, and then I thought, “Hey … what the … ? What’s he doing? Is he …? EEEK!” Mortified, I quickly hid him away in my art folder, never to be seen again. / ... / Until now.
I photographed this oak with its arching branches at Evangeline State Park in St. Martinville, Louisiana. The enormity and the gracefulness of these trees are something to behold. The strength and the resilience of the live oaks are also notable. During a recent hurricane L.S.U. botanists noted that 96% of the live oaks stood their ground! Impressive when so many other trees met their match in 100 mile per hour winds.
This photo was taken in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on the banks of the Bayou Teche close to the Evangeline oak named after the heroine of Longfellow’s epic poem about Evangeline and Gabriel.
