I thought this would be a nice card to illustrate the old cliche, “A woman’s work is never done,” and to honor women everywhere who work hard at home, on the job, within the family circle, in the community, in the church, in public service. This energetic little Eastern bluebird female exemplifies an honorable work ethic in her diligence at nest-building. (Note the bedraggled look of poor little Mama’s feathers; temperatures were in the 90s and she was really feeling the heat and humidity! Just about the same concept as a housewife sweating over the stove or the ironing board!)

SO, do something – remind all the good people!
This image was taken late afternoon in the loft of our barn (badly in need of a new roof). At first I was captivated by the points of light in the semi-dark loft and tried capturing them. Then I thought to myself how much more interesting they would be if you could see the light in its path from the roof to the spot of light on the floor so I began to move the loose hay on the floor from one side of the barn to the other. (I am terribly allergic to hay.) The dust worked its magic and created a spectacular light show. Several hours later my lungs are still agonizing over the assault! / Shown here with off white mat in mocha flat frame. /
Web spun from tangled silk of lies / Woven from truth held in disguise / Where trust ensnared, betrayed it dies / No greater thing do I despise / / Web better built from silk of gold / Woven from truth all can behold / Where trust is free, instead of sold / No greater thing when truth is told / / So earn my trust, earn my respect / Tell me not truths that are suspect / For if false truth I do detect / Then trust from you I can’t expect / / This fractal artwork was inspired by an old quotation from Sir Walter Scott about lying that went ‘Oh what a tangled web we weave, When first we practice to deceive’. My biggest pet peave are liars, and always has been. The artwork depicts how a lie can go on to exponentially effect the lives of others to whom the lie is passed. / / The greatest example currently is the war in Iraq, which was started from a lie to the American public by it’s leader that Iraq had stockpiled ‘weapons of mass destruction’ and intended to use them. This one lie has devastated families and ruined economies across the globe. / / The greatest thing I respect in an individual is their ability to be honest, as then I can grant them the trust that all other things in the relationship will bloom from. So always remember this quotation, as well as, another old adage that says ‘The truth shall set you free!’. / / This fractal artwork was created in Apophysis. The original is 6000×6000 pixels at 300 pixels per inch. The fractal gradient was created with ApoMap, a gradient editor commonly used with Apophysis. Because the original is so large and difficult to see over the internet, I have included a couple of detail cutaways below. / / / / / /

This female rufous hummingbird is collecting material to build her little nest. I saw how hard she worked, and how focussed she was on her goal during the several hours I was privileged to witness this scene. I wanted to portray her tiny size within the cattails. I made this image with a Nikon D2Xs and 200-400 mm lens with a 1.7 TC on a monopod between Campbell River and Courtenay on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Red and black faces
Tell ‘em loud, tell ‘em proud!
A classic ‘Aussie’ colour scheme for anyone who fondly remembers wearing green and gold Zinc Stik in the ‘80s (or those who’d prefer to forget).
The black ants were very busy after the recent heavy rain and I watched these ants bringing up to the surface a mouthful of soil to deposit before returning for yet another and another….. / Each of the ‘crumbs’ on the mound is a mouthful that has been excavated from below – now there is diligence for you! Straight from the camera.
This fellow was encountered during a photography tour of the Valles Caldera National Preserve in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico. The rest of the herd were rather standoffish, but this fellow ambled over to see what we humans were up to, betraying his curious nature (probably what happened to that gnarly ear!) Whether you do or don’t eat meat, there is no denying the intelligence and personality manifest in this face.
This is a work I did to sum up very succinctly some important points regarding ethics and ethical/moral reasoning. The title, “Ethics = empathy x respect squared” is not meant to be a genuine formula it is merely a play on Einstein’s formula for energy, E=mc squared It expresses the idea that two very key elements to an ethical character are a) that a person is capable of empathy for others, and b) that they are prepared acknowledge the right of others to be treated with respect. At the top the illustration of the brain in sagital section, is arbitrarily delineated into four sectors. Each of these represent four qualities that I’ve held for a long time to be essential to being a good human being, virtue (ie engaging in prosocial behaviour and thought while refraining from antisocial behaviour and thought), compassion (which could be said to be another term for empathy), understanding (ie making the effort to use reasoning and evidence in making ethical decisions while refraining from ignorant thought processes such as stereotyping, bigotry etc), and finally tranquility (if a person has a calm mind then they are more able to reason clearly, perceive evidence, and less likely to react in emotive and antisocial ways). In the lower right area of the work is listed what developmental psychologists recognise as the universal and sequential levels of cognitive development in the human species. You will note that I have labelled the first three levels as being religious levels (with the label placed over the basal ganglia to represent that these are very basal modes of ethical reasoning). If you examine the moral instruction given by major religions you will realise that the forms of reasoning they use fit into these basal categories. Studies have indicated, at least to my mind, that religion in fact retards the development of ethical cognition, with followers often not rising above the sterotypical level. This is defined as representing a 7 to 12 year old level of reasoning. Finally, in the lower left area I have simply listed the three major principles of ethical reasoning used in ethical philosophy and applied ethics. Individuals who reach the sixth level of moral reasoning often discover these themselves. It is my contention that the aim of each individual and the aim of education should be to raise everyone’s consciousness to the highest level of moral reasoning that they are capable of.
