This man Pablo, brought me to his home in Taquile Island in the middle of lake Titikaka, He is a part of the “Aymara” a native ethnic group in the Andes and Altiplano regions of South America; about 2.3 million live in Bolivia, Peru, Northern Chile, and Northwestern Argentina. They lived in the region for many centuries before becoming a subject people of the Inca, and later of the Spanish in the 16th century. / The Aymara have existed in the Andes in what is now Bolivia (and, to a lesser extent, Peru) for over 2,000 years, according to some estimates. It is most likely that the Inca had a strong influence over the Aymara region for some time. Though conquered by the Inca, the Aymara retained some degree of autonomy under the empire. There were a number of ethnic groups which were later to be known Aymara by the Spanish. These were divided upon different chieftaincies. Upon arrival of the Spanish, all these groups were spread in what today is Bolivia. / Most present day Aymara-speakers live in the Lake Titicaca basin beginning in Lake Titicaca through Desaguadero River and into Lake Poopo (Oruro) also known as the Altiplano, and are concentrated south of the lake. The present urban center of the Aymara region is El Alto, a 750,000-person city near the Bolivian capital La Paz. / The native language of the Aymara is also named Aymara; in addition, many Aymara speak Spanish, which is the dominant language of the countries in which they live, as a second language. Solar plate etching on embossment from a linocut. / The dragonfly image was taken from a photo i took in my front yard of a dragonfly captured by my son. The poppies are from a William Morris design who must be one of the most amazing designers ever.

A combination of an etching and linocut embossment. 25cm X 28cm on BFK Rives Etching on zinc plate – hard ground (for main shapes), soft ground (for textures) followed by a deep bit for added zing. Inked up in black only. Linocut embossment – much easier: cut up the pieces of lino to match the size of the zinc plate and cut into the lino then emboss the wet paper. No aligning needed as i ran them through the press concurrently.

This is my “Supreme” 2008 Aquatint Etching! Well, it is a copper plate etching, which has been aquatinted over and over and over again, until at last, its love finally! This is my daughter, she is sleeping and dreaming…her soul is at peace as she falls into a deep sleep. 3363 views to date 24/11/09 This is my third copper plate aquatint etching for the year….they are all 30×30 plates on A2 cream University paper. This one is my favorite though. I have printed up 10 of this edition, and can’t wait to print up some more. I am absolutely wrapped in this one. I hope you like it to, if you have any questions about etching or aqautinting please ask me, I would sleep in the print room and breath in the ink and ferric acid every day if I could! But we all have to go home and shower some times! It is still not finished. This is a hand coloured copy of it for now….I will change the picture over when it is complete. I love this print so much. It completes my series. Beech tree etching using Burnt Umber ink and printed onto Sommerset Ivory coloured fine textured etching paper. The copper plate for this etching is A4 size took me 20 / hours to work on it with an etching needle. Each print / takes 1 hour to ink up and polish before printing. This tree seems to have a life of its own and is so / magical. This etching is from a sketch I did in the / Norfolk village of Withersdale Street. BEST VIEWED LARGER ANCIENT PAGAN WISDOM BEECH TREE – PHAGOS – QUEEN OF THE WOODS The Beech tree traditionaly known as the ‘Queen of the / Woods’ beacause / of its beauty and femininity shars its honour with the / Kingly Oak . Local / British traditions associate it with serpents, probably / because of its / serpentine root system, which are revealed by soil / erosion when they / are planted on hills or slopes. Behind this again lurks / the notion of the / wise serpent giving knowledge to those who ask for it. / Several altars to / the beech have been discovered in the French Pyrenees, / suggesting its important to the Celtic tribers who lived / there. It is said that no harm would / ever befall a traveller shelting beneath its branches, while / prayers uttered / in its shade were bound to be answered, just as any curse / spoken there / was said to be more effective. Slivers of beech wood and / leaves were once carried as talismans to bring good luck / and increase creative energy. / Wishes carved on beech wood wands which were / subsequently buried in / the earth, were said tto be particularly effective and, as the / wood rotted / away in the earth, the wish was released to bear fruit in the / outer world. / Thin leaves of beechwood are said to have been bound / together to form / the first book, which is ceretainly in line with its central / association with / writing and the transmission of lore. The Anglo-Saxon word / for ‘beech’ / was bok (which became book), in German Buche is ‘beech / and Buche us ‘book’, While the Swedish word ‘bok’ means / both ‘book’ and ‘beech’.

Etching is a printmaking process where images are created using a metal plate and acid. There are a number of variations but the basic technique involves the following steps. An artist begins by covering the metal plate with a waxy substance or ‘ground’ which is resistant to acid. A needle is then used to draw the design through the wax, revealing the metal underneath. Acid is applied to the plate and the acid eats into the areas of exposed metal. The wax is then cleaned off and ink is applied to the plate filling the areas where the acid has eaten away the metal. The inked plate is passed through a printing press together with a sheet of paper, to create an imprint of the design. Related techniques include aquatint, engraving and drypoint. Not all techniques use acid to create imprints. In drypoint, for example, images are incised directly into the plate using the needle. If you’re keen to give it a try, don’t be put off by the need for particular equipment or tools. With a little imagination you can create artworks inspired by etching techniques, using the art supplies you have access to.
