  • Nestled in Tramuntana mountain range of Mallorca largest island of the Balearics and incredibly popular holiday destination spot lies the town of Valdemossa. The main part of the town is above this section which is from where I took the picture. Its streets are filled with oranges and it was here that Frederik Chopin and his lover George Sands spent part of their Winter in Majorca of which Sands wrote the book of the same name. / Mallorca has been trying to change its image of sun, sea, sand & sex unsuccesfully for some time but there are a multitude of cultural and sporting events on the island that run through the winter time so you can spend your own winter in Mallorca.

  • This was taken at the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid, Spain and now stands in what was originally occupied by Madrid’s first mosque. • Others related images: 1.987 – 1.992 ENGLISH Client: Junta de Andalucía / Architect: Santiago Calatrava / Type: Bowstring / Span: 656 ft / Use: Mixed Local Authorities ordered from Sevilla Santiago Calatrava bridge to provide access to Cartuja island where the Universal Exhibition held in Seville in 1992. In its original form two bridges planned Calatrava symmetrical and opposed to each side of the Cartuja island to provide access to the important exhibition. Subsequently, due to excessive cuts in the budget, the client chose to perform a single bridge over a viaduct of 500 meters in total length. The Alamillo Bridge finally stood on the east side of Round Ring, meander through the San Jeronimo, a tributary of the Guadalquivir river. Highlights of this work is undoubtedly the spectacular cable-stayed pylon height of 142 meters final with the help of 13 pairs of wires that are anchored to the bottom of the deck and through its own weight, get long sustain board 200 meters in total length. This enormous basin, which contains within itself a staircase than one viewpoint at the summit which is called “the eye of the horse’s head” and from which you can see a panoramic view of the entire city of Seville has an inclination of 58 degrees resembles one of the pyramids of Egypt, Cheops. It would give the board a mixed use which was distributed in three lanes for each direction of traffic on both sides and a walkway for pedestrians and bicycles higher in the center. Inspiration Calatrava imagined prior to the completion of this majestic bridge was triggered by a previous sculpture designed by the architect himself called “Torso in motion.”

Located precisely in the area of Laguardia, Rioja Alavesa, the unique building stands out from afar for its beautiful cover by way of sea waves. As is usual with him, largely Calatrava mark the main entrance which is accessed by each of their works. Natural wood contrasts sharply with the aluminum coating that covers the entire deck base rectangular section beams bent, van drawing concave and convex forms, and where nothing is straight. The surprising structure consists basically of two load-bearing walls in the longitudinal direction of the ship, which being also curved like the cover, Calatrava’s clothed inside with a treated wood slats. Already on the outside, we were surprised by the architect using the aluminum silver colored natural and beautiful colors.

  • 1.994 – 1.997 ENGLISH The promoter Campo Volantín S.L. was the catalyst that brought to contest the construction of a bridge over the river Nervión not far from the site where it is located today the prestigious Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the work of another renowned architect, Frank O. Gehry. The main feature of the project was also agreement that the bridge would be high enough to let ships pass under his bottom. Santiago Calatrava, who won the project, designed a breathtaking runway thanks to the great parabolic arch of steel bent and split across the bridge from side to side. The steel arch with a circular section of 50 cm. thickness reaches a final height of 15 meters. The gateway, with a total length of 75 meters rises to 8.5 meters high with respect to its high water to make way for vessels flying their underpass. Two ramps in two tranches of 2 meters wide each with a slope of 7%, saving the high slope that provides the bridge to cross from one side to another. Tensioned wires of 30 mm. in diameter, are anchored to the arch of an immaculate white for the support of the striking gateway. The architect gave to this footbridge and innovative modern design by using a material with beautiful colors, translucent glass, and together with the artificial lighting by means of staying under the dashboard lights, produce every night a unique visual spectacle and truly spectacular .
