Visited the Botanical Garden this am and found this really unusual Tree, these are the Flowers, the stem and trunk are covered in spikey bits.The fruit is as large as coconuts and similar looking though without husks, hence the name Cannonball, apparently they are edible but the smell puts People off. / The Flowers smell lovely. / The Trees are grown from seeds and originally came from South America. The butterfly and birds were taken from my painting “Thoughts and Things” and the white flower is an old plastic earring….the teapot was given to me by my father who knows I collect tiny silver things like this…..from an op shop somewhere, thank you dad! The table is a cork! Once the Chunkies are created and photographed, I usually dismantle them to be used in the creation of more chunkies, so I am recycling the plasticine. These Chunkies have been very therapeutic to create over the holidays, whilst taking a break from red bubble and having my family around. I have many more to come, and although I won’t be on RB as much, I hope to also be doing some serious painting this year…so i look forward 2009 with much anticipation …

Acrylic on canvas, 15.5” x 15.5”, created in January 2009. With a new president and philosophy in the USA, a spirit of optimism has finally opened up for many of us who had problems with the previous administration’s attitudes. This is especially true in regards to the overwhelming evidence of the harm we’ve been doing to our environment. In this painting, a rich red poppy has also opened up, growing out from a rusty, discarded tin can. The atmosphere around it is grungy and its spindly leaf is barely recognizable – is it up to the task of photosynthesizing the nutrients the flower needs to survive? The title of the work provides a hint at my hopes and feelings. A closely related piece is “The Price of Redemption – an Ecological Statement”. / / ~

Nikon D60 + OE There are about 100–110 species of Fuchsia. The great majority are native to South America, but with a few occurring north through Central America to Mexico, and also several from New Zealand, and Tahiti. One species, Fuchsia magellanica, extends as far as the southern tip of South America, occurring on Tierra del Fuego in the cool temperate zone, but the majority are tropical or subtropical. Most fuchsias are shrubs from 0.2–4 m (8 in-13 ft) tall, but one New Zealand species, Kotukutuku (Fuchsia excorticata), is unusual in the genus in being a tree, growing up to 12–15 m (39-49 ft) tall. / Fuchsia leaves are opposite or in whorls of 3–5, simple lanceolate and usually have serrated margins (entire in some species), 1–25 cm long, and can be either deciduous or evergreen, depending on the species. The flowers are very decorative, pendulous “eardrop” shape, borne in profusion throughout the summer and autumn, and all year in tropical species. They have four long, slender sepals and four shorter, broader petals; in many species the sepals are bright red and the petals purple (colours that attract the hummingbirds that pollinate them), but the colours can vary from white to dark red, purple-blue, and orange. A few have yellowish tones, and recent hybrids have added the colour white in various combinations. The ovary is inferior and the fruit is a small (5–25 mm) dark reddish green, deep red, or deep purple, edible epigynous berry, containing numerous very small seeds. Many people describe the fruit as having a subtle grape flavor spiced with black pepper.

Captured in rural Boulder County, Colorado….let me just say this was honest to God unbelievable to photograph. I had to handhold these shots because of my bum knee and well, the lightning was going crazy right above me. But I managed to get some dang nice shots off. This being one of them. I am really happy with this one, I debated about a square crop, but in the end I figured why the heck not, nothing ventured, nothing gained, right folks?
