  • Looking down into the main entrance of Empire Mine as it would be seen by the miners about to be shot into it (tracks on the right) and as the gold ore was removed (tracks on the left). What you can barely see as an obstruction in the left side at the second set of lights is actually one of the mining cars (close-ups to be seen later). The miners were seated in a sideless, topless railcar that had nothing but 2X4’s for them to push their feet against and balance their butts on as they were literally dropped into the mines at a phenomenal speed. (More on that later). On their way down they held their legs as far inward as possible (with some other miner sitting between their knees) and ducked their heads. If they didn’t, I’m assuming there would be a lot of commotion from the miners behind the one half splattered against the rusty framework holding the mine open. Not a good way to start your day…. This shot was a combination of flash and higher ISO so I could show the walls in the foreground and something more than a black hole in the middle. It took about 10 minutes to get the correct set of parameters working but, in the end, both the Nikon D80 and the Nikon D60 managed to get the shot. The ambiance lighting was limited to three places: at the top (where we were), at the middle, and at the bottom. By the way, Empire Mines had the best safety record of any gold mine in California with under 30 deaths in thousands of workers. Some of that is easily attributed to the metal frameworks used here were nothing but timber was used elsewhere. To make those frameworks, a large shop was a crucial part of the mine’s daily operations.

  • Coming out, or commonly “coming out of the closet,” describes the usually voluntary public revealing of a person’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Being “out” is considered the opposite of closeted and usually refers to sexuality and gender minorities – lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people. Being outed refers to having this information revealed, often without consent. Outing is the process of deliberately disclosing the sexuality of another who wants to keep this aspect of themselves private. The term gay was originally used, until well into the mid-20th century, primarily to refer to feelings of being “carefree,” “happy,” or “bright and showy”; it had also come to acquire some connotations of “immorality” as early as 1637. The term later began to be used in reference to homosexuality, in particular, from the early 20th century, a usage that may have dated prior to the 19th century. In modern English, gay has come to be used as an adjective, and occasionally as a noun, that refers to the people, practices, and culture associated with homosexuality. By the end of the 20th century the word gay was recommended by major style guides to describe people attracted to members of the same sex. At about the same time, a new, pejorative use was visible in some parts of the world. In the UK, US and Australia, this connotation, among younger generations of speakers had a non-sexual derisive meaning equivalent to rubbish or stupid (as in “That’s so gay.”) / The Rainbow flag or Pride flag of the LGBT community (also known as the gay pride flag) is a symbol of LGBT pride and LGBT social movements in use since the 1970s. The colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, and the flag is often used as a symbol of gay pride in LGBT rights marches. It originated in the United States, but is now used worldwide. Designed by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978, the design has undergone several revisions. As of 2008, the most common variant consists of six stripes, with the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The flag is commonly flown horizontally, with the red stripe on top, as the colors would appear in a natural rainbow. My Images Do Not Belong To The Public Domain. All images are copyright © taiche. • Exchequer Mine entrance Originally staked in the 1880’s, the Exchequer was among the largest producers of silver and tungsten in the region. The tunnel and shaft were excavated primarily with dynamite, picks, and shovels. Ore was first transported by mule train wagons, and later in large dumptrucks. The pipes were devised to pump out copious amounts of water inside the main shaft. Recent (1990’s) efforts to resume operations have not proven successful. Small mines such as this are handicapped by expensive government regulations, such as environmental impact studies. RedBubble Album: Great Prospects: Mines and Mills

  • Featured in ImageWriting / (2009.JUN.12) When John Dale Salvi passed on to his final reward, his ex-wife inherited the old ranch. Years later, she told me that upon viewing his body, she received a vision instructing her to create this shrine to his memory. This, she said, was her mission; her atonement for the bitterness that had characterized their living relationship. As I passed by, this cloudy morning, I just had to stop and capture the ethereal view of the gate, and the majestic shrouded Egan Mountains. / Northern Steptoe Valley – Eastern Nevada / (2009.JUN.11) RedBubble Album: Great Atmosphere Canon 350D EOS / Tamron 55/200mm JASC PaintShop Pro x7
