The Gresham Palota is a recently restored Art-Deco masterpiece. It was originally built and owned by the Gresham Insurance Company in London and was concieved as an arcade for shops with luxury apartments above. It was heavily bombed during WWII but in recent years has been bought and restored by The Four Seasons Hotel chain. They have tried to remain true to the original Art-Deco features however, there are some modern touches like this beautiful chandelier which is comprised of several pieces of twisted, hand-blown glass. It looks like a giant ball of flames floating over the recption desk. Stunning.

Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Bonnet Island Lighthouse at Hells Gate Macquarie Harbour, West Coast Tasmania, Australia. The narrow 120 metre entrance to the huge Macquarie Harbour was discovered in 1815. Within a year, timber cutters moved in. Navigating the narrow entrance and its sandbar was an essential hazard in getting the timber to Hobart. / A signal station was erected near Cape Sorell in 1822 to indicate conditions entering the harbour. It was manned by convicts from the newly established penal settlement at Sarah Island. / The conditions were so bad at the new Sarah Island that the convicts named the entrance to the harbour Hells Gate. Other records indicate the name was used due to the enormous rush of the tides through the entrance to the harbour which can create very dangerous conditions. / In 1891, a light was exhibited from two white six sided wooden towers, one on the western side of Entrance Island, and the other on Bonnet Island. Also, a breakwater was constructed at Hells Gate to check the sandbar, and in 1899 a light was constructed a Cape Sorell. / The Strahan Marine Board purchased a dredge in 1909 and continued to improve the entrance so that many large vessels could enter. / The Entrance Light was powered by gas until 1977, when solar panels and batteries took over. / The weatherboard cladding was renewed in 1989. This was created from two separate tripod mounted exposures and processed using HDR software, then completed in Photoshop to suit. I would highly recommend a visit to the Astor Theatre in Melbourne which is where this was captured. It is an amazing example of the Art Deco era.
The front steps of Lumley Castle. lit with only one small but bright lamp on the top railing. Because of the deep shadows cast on the steps, I knew this would make a good B&W images as I was framing it in the camera. EOS 1D MkIII, 17-40mm (L)

Durham Cathedral viewed from the gateway of the Castle looking across Palace Green. The Cathedral Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and St Cuthbert of Durham, commonly referred to as Durham Cathedral, in the city of Durham, England, is the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Durham. The Bishopric dates from 995, with the present cathedral being founded in AD 1093. The cathedral is regarded as one of the finest examples of Norman architecture and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with nearby Durham Castle, which faces it across Palace Green. The present cathedral replaces the 10th century “White Church” built as part of a monastic foundation to house the shrine of Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. The treasures of Durham Cathedral include relics of St Cuthbert, the head of St Oswald of Northumbria and the remains of the Venerable Bede. Durham Cathedral occupies a strategic position on a promontory high above the River Wear. From 1080 until the 19th century the bishopric enjoyed the powers of a Bishop Palatine, having military as well as religious leadership and power. Durham Castle was built as the residence for the Bishop of Durham. The seat of the Bishop of Durham is the fourth most significant in the Church of England hierarchy, and he stands at the right hand of the monarch at coronations. Signposts for the modern day County Durham are somewhat fancifully subtitled “Land of the Prince Bishops.” There are daily Church of England services at the Cathedral, with the Durham Cathedral Choir singing daily except Mondays and while the choir is in recess. The cathedral is a major tourist attraction within the region, the central tower of 217 feet (66 m) giving views of Durham and the surrounding area.
