  • The engine driver has just thrown some more coal into the furnace. Smoke billows from the stack and Engine 3526 is ready to leave Thirlmere Station. Thirlmere, where I currently live, is in the Southern Highlands of NSW Australia. It has a Railway Museum which is presently undergoing major restoration and development. On weekends and sometimes during the week, special trains – all crewed by volunteer enthusiasts with fire in their furnaces – run along the old Loop Line. This one was ready to take a group of English rail enthusiasts on a trip down the line to Buxton. Technical Stuff: Nikon D80, Sigma 10-20mm lens @ 10mm, hand held. Normal Program, 1/125sec, f5.6, ISO 200, Pattern metering, Auto Exp & WB. / Then, in Photoshop Elements 3, I converted the image to sepia and did a small spot of selective colouring.

  • The last train to steam into Llangollen station was in 1968 and for seven years after this the buildings and track bed were left to the mercy of mother nature. / Thankfully, enthusiasts rallied round and began to do their bit to preserve this once proud service and a group of enthusiastic volunteers started the long haul back to use. By September 1975 an open day saw 60 ft of track laid and the Llangollen Heritage Steam Railway was born. / /
