Photography never really stirred in me until I got back from spending 12 months making my way through 26 different countries. At the time you’re pleased you’ve taken a good photo but it’s not until you get home, re-assimilate into the Australian way of life, that you see the real value in what you’ve captured. Suddenly everything was saturated in colour, I’d walk around looking up and down and around things I’d never noticed before. I’d observe people and persistently be longing for my camera when I wouldn’t have it with me. / By day I work in I.T and drive a sports car and that doesn’t bother me. I enjoy my work and I surround myself in things that make me happy, regardless of peoples pre-conceptions. These are generally immaterial things in life, they’re important because they allow you to do things, and they sustain your immediate happiness, but they serve no real purpose in the experience. / I’m saving for my next trip. There’s no greater education than experience first hand, to hear and tell stories, to see real passion in peoples eyes when they ferociously explain their plights. It’s these experiences, outside my weaning ground that will redefine my boundaries and push the limits of my tolerance and understanding. If I so happen to have a camera available, then great.

Well, back from South Australia. What a place! I have checked out the photos I took with my digital camera and although most of them are okay, I’m still not happy with the resolution. Is it a better camera I need? I also got a spot of water on the lens and took some shots without knowing it was there. Rats! I had an Xd card error, too, and it looks like I will have lost some of the photos I took. Luckily, I used my analog camera as well, duplicating some shots where I could. I also killed my mobile phone with water that leaked into my bag from my drink bottle. How on earth did I forget to tighten the cap properly? Must have been all the excitement about going off on holidays for a week. It was really great, but I still need to get the analog photos developed, so it might be a while before I get any of the pics up on Redbubble. Meanwhile, I have enhanced and cropped and otherwise manipulated a few of some older shots. I was not happy with these as they were and now that I have changed them they say more to me than they did before. As if some underlying or parallel aspect to the pics has been revealed now. It’s been great to relax and get away from my creative work for a while. It always works when I get stuck!

Ive mentioned recently that I had an operation on my right hand. Well over the last couple of days ive been able to (with a little help) get my camera on the tripod with a view to do some studio work. Painting with light is top of the list once i get a small maglite so i thought, since the moon is full at the mo’, i’d give that a go. Wasn’t too impressed with the sharpness but the 2 photoshop enhanced images ive uploaded im quite pleased with. Just subtle enhancements, nothing too complicated. Thanks for the continued supportive comments :) See u around the Bubble Paul

Some RedBubbler photographers have uploaded fantastic images sans description. For me, reading the description greatly enhances my experience in viewing the artwork, and I am always disappointed when there is none. I would like to encourage everyone to take the time to tell us about your image in the Description. Tell us what drew your lens. Tell us a story about it. Tell us your thoughts. Don’t rely on the Comments because they can get so long, readers will just skim them. Make me happy, A.

I would love a group for naked photographers, I don’t mean I’m unclothed while pressing my buttons, but rather the image from the camera is uploaded with no effects or enhancements, only what the camera could do itself. / Is any body else interested in helping out, or even uploading images if there was indeed a group dedicated to this, please let me know. / Still wearing my underwear, / Tony

I like way RedBubble is evolving. RedBubble listens to us and consistently improves the site based on feedback from its members. So, I have put together a WishList of enhancements to a community that is creatively supportive and a potentially powerful marketing tool. One of my favorite new tools is Promote Me! Here goes: BubbleMail opens in a new window. / The ability to organize Comments by title or commentor. / This setup would greatly help when I want to send a BubbleMail to someone who has commented on several of my images. An archive for BubbleMail. / Inbox (read and unread) / Sent (currently, there is no file for sent email) The ability to view the original BubbleMail while I respond. The ability to move images in my Art by drag and drop. It would help to have reduced-size thumbnails on the Edit/Move page. Albums or Folders or Themes or Categories in the portfolio for organizing images. These are listed on the main public profile page outside the profile bio. Add a blog with threads to each Group with a preview and its link on the Group’s home page. Not a Journal or Forum, a Blog. Notification if there is a response or addition to my post in a Forum or Group. Notification if it was a Bubbler who purchased my art. No notification beyond the sale notice if the purchaser is outside Red Bubble. A running total of total views of my art which includes the number of views of art I have removed. It is discouraging to see my number of views drop when I edit my portfolio and remove images. I would love to know how many times my photos have been viewed since I signed up. In MyBubble, add a view count for our Public Profiles. I would love to know that people are viewing my public profile. Add the artist’s $Share information and current total to the Sales page. Do not show this info for purchases by the artist. The current description is enough. Allow buyers to search categories within a price range. That would greatly simplify the process for them. The ability to choose what images are in my Promote Me slideshow. It is a hefty wish list, but this is the season for wishes! What enhancements would you like to see on RedBubble? Peace, from a Jacquie Lawson fan, / Anita

I am a recent “addict” as well. It is so unique to go and join a “community” that is exactly that…there are so many talents from all over this “third rok from the sun”. I, too, have enjoyed and appreciated the diversity that is unified in this community of writers, artists, photographers, humorists, etc. Your images only enhance the vantage point of redbubble. Thankyou for sharing them..The only forseeable challenge I see is that I would have to be a veritable tycoon to afford just a small sampling of the talent exhibited on these electronic pages. From one ‘bubbler to another; glad to have your company.

Photoshop: Less Is More When I bought PhotoShop for the first time some years ago I was blown away by its power and potential. I’d heard about this magic software but didn’t realise that with such power comes much responsibility. The first images I used with PhotoShop looked terrible. Clumsy lighting effects splashed with a pinch or wind effect. / As I experimented with the software I realised that to enhance my macro shots I needed a greater knowledge of Photoshop and some simple techniques that would allow my images to shine not become mutilated. These are some simple tools I have found extremely effective. / 1. Use Curves to illuminate your image without putting that haze over the image. Originally I played around with the lighting tool but found the Curves tool so much more effective. You can find Curves but going to IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>CURVES / 2. Make subtle changes to the colour of your image using the colour balance tool. Experiment with the Shadows, Midtones and Highlight. Be careful not to go to extremes. Over colouring can make the water red in a beach landscape shot. You can find the colour balance tool by going to IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>COLOUR BALANCE / 3. Experiment with the Crop tool. Look to erase meaningless space and colour that takes away from the focus of the photograph. Once again don’t go overboard. Some space around the main focal point of the photo will frame it beautifully. The Crop tool is found on the tool bar. / With these 3 tools do everything in moderation. These 3 tools work best with a great photo to start with. Whatever you’ve heard Photoshop will not create a great photo all by itself but can be used to great effect to make a good photo a great one. Kind Regards Paul

For those of you who may have read my recent ‘rant’, this is going to sound like a complete 180 spin… I’m not apologizing, nor am I going to explain myself ‘cept to say that I have read all the replies that were made to my rant. Further more, I have absorbed the wisdom within them… which is sometimes harder said than done. First, let me just thank all of the people that replied to that journal entry. I was in a wierd place when I wrote it…. you could even say the place was dark? I’m not the only one to have mood swings though and I needed to vent somewhere. This seemed like a good place to unload at the time. Anyway, some of you may have noticed that I’ve been make a bigger effort in acknowledging the people who do actually comment on my work. It’s not that it ever gone un-noticed, but as it was pointed out to me, it’s just a nice community based thing to do… so I’m doin’ it as best I can given time constraints etc. I have also started to make some more of my work available for sale (also suggested to me) however this is a somewhat laborious task and may take me some time to complete. Some of the work though, will not be made available for different reasons but that’s just the way it is. If anyone has any requests or questions though, I’m more than happy to field Bubble Mails or Emails. Lastly, I have been making some cosmetic enhancements around my little corner of RB tonight. My mouse is spewing smoke from some fried internal ‘techo bit’ and the CTRL button on the right side of my poor keyboard has shit itself but still… it’s done and I’m pretty happy with the way it’s turned out. It’s nothing mind blowing but it has been something I’ve neglected to do for some time. I’d be interested in knowing your thought and suggestions about it all though. Until my next mood swing. / Cheers, Matt

Many RB members have asked me how I did my home page to look the way it does and I thought I would enter a journal to describe just how it was done. I hope it will be of help to you all. HOW TO USE LINKS AND IMAGES TO ENHANCE YOUR RB HOME PAGE / (To get this, go to your own online gallery site, choose your favourite banner (usually supplied by the web hosts) , right click on the image, choose properties & copy the full URL-address. Then open your “EDIT MY PROFILE”-link, put an exclamation mark (!) and then paste the copied URL-address of the image and end again with an exclamation mark (!). It will look like this (remember, DO NOT PUT IN ANY SPACES BETWEEN THE ADDRESS AND THE EXCLAMATION MARKS!) ! http://www.imagekind.com/images/buttons/buy_my_art.gif ! / (These two icons, I got from the two RedBubble Groups in their Forum Postings. Go check & find your links there. Then do the same as above.) eg. ! http://images-1.redbubble.com/img/art/cropped/size:small/view:main/958066-1-pimt-logo.jpg ! and ! http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/7122/1on1iu5.png ! To put shortcut images on your home page, follow the next steps: / 1) Go to your PUBLIC PROFILE (Open in another tab so you keep your EDIT PROFILE tab open to work on) / 2) Click on VIEW ALL ART (underneath your featured images – the big ones) / 3) Choose the pic you want to display on the front page, right click on the image, go to PROPERTIES, highlight the full URL-ADDRESS, close (OK). / 4) Go to EDIT MY PROFILE tab, type in an ! (exclamation mark), right click & paste the URL ADDRESS you copied. / 5) Now you can do one of two things: / (a) Just add the image without linking it to the picture (where people leave their comments) This is done by just typing the !, followed by the URL ADDRESS, ending with another ! (Remember, no spaces). Eg. ! http://images-0.redbubble.net/img/art/size:small/view:main/1580804-1-shed-a-tear-at-my-beauty.jpg ! Also remember to highlight the full URL-ADDRESS when you copy, i.e. see to it that you have a .jpg or .png or .gif at the end of the address and a http://images-0.redbubble.net ….. at the beginning as shown in the example. / (b) Add the image and the link taking the user to the page where your image is displayed. This is done as follows: Follow steps 1 to 4 above, type in an exclamation mark (!), followed by the FULL URL-ADDRESS, then another exclamation mark. Now add a colon ( : ). Leave as is and then go to the page (in another tab or a new page) where your photo/image is displayed to the public (the place where people can leave comments). Look at the top (all the way up where your Internet Explorer Page shows the URL-ADDRESS of the page you are on now) eg. http://www.redbubble.com/people/craftloft/art Copy this address by highlighting all and right click and copy. Go back to your EDIT YOUR PROFILE tab, paste this copied info immediately after the colon ( : ). No exclamation mark is necessary at the end of this procedure. / 6) Follow these steps with all the images you want to put on your front page. Remember to put a space between EACH image description if you want to put your images next to each other. And when you’ve added five images, remember to enter and then start with the next five images, etc. until you are finished. When you’re finished remember to save your work. I always save and then view my public profile in another tab to see if I made mistakes. / 7) As shown on my home page, I usually just put five xsmall pics next to another, but the size I explained above, is for small images. If you want the images to be as small as mine just change the small part of the URL address to xsmall by typing in the x* before the *small in the copied URL ADDRESS of the image (under properties). Eg. http://images-2.redbubble.net/img/art/size:small/view:main/1620163-2-swan-wannabe.jpg Change the small to xsmall and you get the same size pics as shown below. Newest Artworks – Not on my Home Page! / / / / / ________________________ ARTWORKS, DESIGNS & PHOTOS CHOSEN AS GROUP AVATARS / – the avatar (3 August 2008 to 13 August 2008) for the National Parks of the World Group hosted by Philip Johnson and Scott Robertson. / - the avatar for the Public Art Group hosted by Alan Findlater and Roslyn Lunetta and it’s web counterpart Public Art To do the above, do the following: / a) Choose the image you want (by going to the tab where your image is shown under VIEW ALL ART in your public profile. / b) Click on the image which will take you to the page where your image is shown to the public for commenting. / c) Next to your big picture, on the right hand side, there is a buy-banner ( ) which shows a choice between cards and prints. If you want to put a card on your home page, then choose CARDS. / d) When the card is displayed, right click on the image, choose PROPERTIES, highlight the FULL URL-ADDRESS and right click copy. / e) Go to the EDIT MY PROFILE tab – Put an exclamation mark, paste the copied info, follow steps 1 to 5 as explained above. / f) If you want to put a link to the group where your work is featured do the following: / i) Put quotation marks ( “ ) Type the name of the group, type quotation marks ( “ ) again, immediately followed by a colon ( : ) Leave as is for the moment. / ii) Go to the group’s main page in another tab. Use your Internet Explorer URL-ADDRESS (at the top of your page), right click and copy. / iii) Go back to the tab where your EDIT YOUR PROFILE tab is and immediately after the colon ( : ), paste the address you copied. REMEMBER: NO SPACES BETWEEN ANYTHING!!! eg.” National Parks of the World Group ” : http://www.redbubble.com/groups/ontario-provincial-parks-art / ________________________ VIEW PER GALLERY TRADITIONAL ART _PAINTINGS: People Portraits & Faces _PAINTINGS: Animals _PAINTINGS: Trees & Plants _PAINTINGS: Flowers (To do the above layout, use steps 1 to 7 as explained above) But instead of putting images next to each other, just enter after each image’s coding for display to show your pics as above. Also follow step (f) of steps a to f above, to link to the different sections you want to show! ) HOW TO CATEGORIZE YOUR ART / 8) When you upload an image, choose a TAG as description, eg. ANCIENTEGYPT and tag all the images fitting this description with exactly the same named tag. When you’re finished, go to the tab where you EDIT YOUR PROFILE. / 9) First, add your best image of this section, (by now you must already know how to do this) as follows: ! http://images-2.redbubble.net/img/art/cropped/size:xsmall/view:main/1076850-2-nefertiti-mysterious-and-powerful.jpg !, then space bar, then a quotation mark ( “ ), then the name of your SECTION, eg. PAINTINGS: People of ANCIENT EGYPT (Leave as is for the moment) / 10) Open in another tab any redbubble page (it could be the home page or your own profile page, it doesn’t matter). Check for the SEARCH-button. In front of it is an open space where you can type in the tag you just named, eg. ANCIENTEGYPT. / 11) Click on SEARCH. This will show all the work you tagged as ANCIENTEGYPT. / 12) Go to the top of the Internet Explorer Page, copy the URL-Address. / 13) Go back to your tab where you EDIT YOUR PROFILE. Immediately after the quotation mark ( “ ) , type in the name of your section, eg. Paintings:Ancient Egypt. Type in another “ , then right click and paste the address you copied in step 12. Now the closing will look as follows (Remember: no spaces before or after the name you give): “ Paintings: Ancient Egypt ” : http://www.redbubble.com/search/ANCIENT EGYPT_ ______________________ / You can do the same with the part below. Now just change the section (tagged description) with the group and group URL. IMAGES FEATURED ON RB GROUPS’ HOME PAGES (Shameless Self Promotion!) / In the 1 on 1: The Fine Art of Portraiture Group / In the National Parks of the World Group / In the Exotic Mammals Group / In the Exotic Mammals Group / In the Stop & Smell the Roses Group / In the Fine Arts Group ______________________ Below are images in my profile, that are very popular on RedBubble. Use the steps no. 1 to 7 to add your own marketing space as I displayed mine. ;D FAVOURITE REDBUBBLE IMAGES (click on image to go to the linked page) /

WOW… so far we’ve had 745 favouritings and 10,419 views since uploading this journal. Hope it helps :) Hi Everyone This would be the most FAQ I receive from other bubblers, ie, how do i enhance my profile, how do I create a link, how do I display my products on the page…. It’s so easy, very simple, just a few steps away – anyone can do it, you can do it!! Be encouraged! As I receive lots of requests for assistance about enhancing the front profile page of your red bubble homepage, I have decided to take some time to describe and explain in a step by step tutorial the various methods. / a) I always begin by opening up two tabs/windows / b) Open the ‘edit your profile page’ or the ‘edit your description’ box in the first tab/window / c) In the first window where you are editing your description, type an exclamation mark ! / d) Click to open the other tab/window / e) Go to the public view of the image whose product you wish to display / f) Click on the BUY/PREVIEW NOW button / g) You will notice there are a range of products here for you to choose from eg, card preview, print preview, laminated print preview, matted print preview / h) Click one of these options to view the product / i) Once you have chosen which product you’d like to add as a preview, right click on it and select ‘copy image location’ / j) Return to your first opened tab/window and paste the ‘copied image location’ right beside the exclamation mark / k) Add another exclamation mark after the pasted image location, leaving no spaces / YOU NOW HAVE DISPLAYED YOUR PRODUCT You can go on to make this a clickable link if desired. / l) Add a colon right next to the exclamation mark / m) Click on the second tab/window and press the back button at the top left hand side of your browser twice until it returns to the public view of your image / n) click in the url website address box at the top of your computer to highlight it / o) right click to copy the address / p) return to your first open tab/window and paste the copied url address beside the colon / YOU NOW HAVE A CLICKABLE LINK to the page from your product preview display This is very similar to how you would display a tshirt, but the tees are a littler easier, you do not need to go to the BUY/PREVIEW as you can copy the image location of your tshirt for display just by going to the main page where your image is located… bypassing that step, the rest is pretty much the same. for example below is a clickable text link / Click here to see my Calendars when you create the link it should end up looking something like this / a) I always begin by opening up two tabs/windows / b) Open the ‘edit your profile page’ or the ‘edit your description’ box in the first tab/window / c) Type one set of inverted commas / d) Type in the text, eg, “link to my website” , or “click here” / e) Type another set of inverted commas at the end of your text / f) Type a colon : / g)Click on the second tab/window and go to the website you want your text linked to / h) Right click in the url box at the top of the screen to highlight the url/website address or another page on red bubble where you are linking your text to a work of art etc / i) Paste the address right beside the colon / j) there should be no spaces whatsover / k) Click on the button to Save your changes / l) Go to preview and check the link has worked and is clickable / m) If not – recheck that you haven’t left any spaces, etc for example below is a clickable image link / It should look something like this / a) as above / b) as above / c) Type in an exclamation mark ! / d) Click on the second tab/window and go to the image you wish to add and make clickable / e) Because most images on RB are now protected with clear gifs, you cannot just copy the image itself, you will need to click on the preview/buy button to view the products, such as cards and prints, unless it’s a tshirt…which you can copy… once you’ve chosen product you wish to display….. / e) Right click on the image and choose the ‘copy image location’ option an click on it / f) Return to the first open tab in the editing box / g) Paste the image location right beside the exclamation mark / h) Type another exclamation mark, directly after the image location / i) Type a colon / j) Click on the second tab/window and go to the url address of the page your image is on / k) Click on the address to highlight it / l) Right click to copy the address / m) Return to your first tab/window and paste the url address beside the colon / n) Click to save your changes / o) Click to preview / p) You should have a clickable image link / q) If not, return to your editing and check you have left no spaces anywhere here’s an example of a clickable thumbnail / Here’s what it should like like to you / a) as above (open the edit your profile box in my bubble) / b) as above (open it up at my bubble and go to Art) / c) return to the edit your profile box / d) insert an exclamation mark / e) Click on the second tab/window / f) Locate the small thumbnail you wish to display in your profile from your Art or TShirt Section Listings in your My Bubble area / g) Right click on the small thumnail and click on copy image location / h) Click on first tab and paste the image location right beside the exclamation mark / i) Insert an exclamation mark directly after the url / j) Insert a colon directly after the exclamation mark / k) Click on your second tab/window / l) Go to the thumbnail and click on the thumbnail / m) Go to the url/website address of your image and click in the url box to highlight url address / n) Left click to copy the address / o) Return to your first tab/window (edit your profile) and past the url address directly beside the colon leaving no spaces whatsoever / p) Save your changes / q) Go to view publick view of your work / r) You should now have a clickable thumbnail / s) If not go back to edit your profile and check you’ve left no spaces and recheck your steps PS – if you wish to add a whole heap of thumbnails repeat the process, leaving one space between each thumbnail Here’s an example of a Banner / Here’s an example of what it would look like to you / I have added some nice banners to the front of my Profile Page, and folks often ask how this is done. If you have software like Photoshop and are family with it, then it should be fairly easy. I create a banner in Photoshop, using a simple rectangle shape, keeping it rather small in size …. approx 500×70 pixels (or 6×9 cm) something like that should fit fairly well in the space. I then save my file. I opened a Photobucket account especially so that I could create banners and save them to Photobucket (a free online Photo storage facility). Photobucket is very easy to use, simple and self explanatory. Once you have opened your account there you can upload your banners from your Photoshop saved files. Once you have saved your banners there, you can click on the Direct Link button beneath your thumbnail, to automatically copy the image location address. I try to keep it as simple as possible? This will demonstrate the Orton effect as well as other editing tips that I use to create certain effects in Paintshop Pro. Demo 1 / Select Picture. This picture is already quite light, which means I don’t need to lighten it any further to create the Orton effect. demo2 / Go into edit and copy! demo3 / Edit>Paste as new Layer, do this twice! demo4 / Use the selection tool to select a part of your photograph that you wish to remain sharp during the process? demo5 / Now invert the selection. demo6 / The first raster, create a Gaussan Blure in Adjust and blure! demo7 / demo8 / Now make sure you highlight the next raster on your bottom right layer and go into adjust > softness and softfocus. I usually allow for the default and click ok! demo9 / demo10 / Now Multiply the layer. demo11 / Now select the next raster layer and again Multiply! demo12 / Go into Layer on top, Merge and flatten all! Invert the selection again. demo13 / Now go into enhance photo and clarify! demo14 / As you can see only the selected part of the photograph will receive the treatment and click ok! demo15 / Now go to adjust > sharpen > unsharpen mask! demo16 / Deselect! demo17 / To brighten the image up, go into adjust > brightness and contrast > levels and use the middle slider to lighten the picture! demo18 / In this case, I have also brought the right slider up to meet up with the beginning of the curve to bring in some contrast as well as adjusting the middle slider! demo19 / And click ok! demo20 / Now you have acheaved the orton effect. But to turn it into even something more different? I will show how to use the curves to create something like cross processing. / Go into Adjust > Brightness and Contrast and select Curves! demo21 / The RGB box has red green and blue which we will use individually to create the cross processing effect! demo22 / First select red and push the curve up to desired effect! demo23 / Now select green and do the same! demo24 / This time, select blue, but instead of taking the curve up, you need to take it down. and click ok! Each time a new effect has been created it is good to remember to always save as in case you don’t like the experiment? Now you have learned how I apply the orton effect as well as the cross processing. demo25 / Sometimes, if I don’t like the extreme effect of what I have done? I get one of my closer to original work of the same frame, which usually you can find in File and reasont files and click on it to open it! demo26 / To layer this image on top of your work, click Edit > Copy and close the copied image. demo27 / Now go back into Edit > Paste as new Layer! demo28 / You have created a new raster on the bottom right in your layer box! demo29 / I have selected Multy for the effect but it is good for you to experiment to get to know all the different effects you can create? demo30 / Layers > Merge > Merge All demo31 / Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Levels and again lighten with the middle slider! demo32 / To bring in a little contrast, go into enhance photo and clarify! demo33 / To use the noise reduction, which can create a very pleasing effect go into enhance photo and noisereduction! Your work really is finnished! Or is it? Depends if you would like to create a filter effect? demo34 / On your bottom right in the illustration click on new layer and a box comes up and just click ok. demo35 / Sellect a colour above in Matterial. Preferably a lightish tone, but again experiment. and fill your image with the fill bucket demo36 / Again multiply and use the 100% slider and move down for a more suttle effect and flatten image again as before! And finally save as! As for me, I have aplied some final finishing touches such as Film and Filters and here is the finnished work! demo37 / The Kingfisher Trail in Jumbles Country Park

Please advise if still unsure. Does that help? / To help you along, put this into your search engine: / http://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=? / Then replace the ’ ? ’ with the domain of choice … without the ‘http://www’. / Some sites don’t have a favicon, so you’ll get the generic earth-shaped favicon. To link images and pages together, here are easy-to-read articles that both I and other amazing Redbubblers have written. 1. Formatting Your Article / 2. Linking Photographs / 3. Making the Series Pages / 4. But Wait, There is SO Much More There are many other articles that talk about this, but I like to think that these are the most concise. :) EXTRA / What is a favicon? / How can I make my own favicon?

There are so many tips’n’tricks, tutorials, enhancements and various other interesting articles listed around Redbubble. I’ve decided it is time to revitalise the articles I have written. / Why? Because so many writers are long-winded, overly-descriptive and their instructions are near impossible to navigate. As I walked out to view the sunrise this morning the statement “Gorgeabulous”! jumped into my mind, so as a language arts major I immediately began analyzing my newly coined adjective. English is rather unique in the sense that we can do whatever we want with it as long we communicate the intended idea and the words we choose are essentially sensible – as opposed to nonsense. (Case in point, the above statement is grammatically correct yet rather cumbersome in conveying the intended idea). Our language isn’t governed by a royal academy such as Spanish – per se, so we native speakers abide by the rules of grammar and usage. Of course these rules are in conflict much of the time, thus when all else fails, we fall back on the overriding principle that our choice of words must effectively communicate an intended idea. If however you say whatever you want to say in a way that lets others understand the idea you want to convey, it’s correct. If it don’t, it ain’t. So, let’s dissect the word into elements to see if it’s feasible. My mind obviously decided that the combined suffixes -abulous was a logical choice for building a unique adjective. The only problem is that the word gorgeous already has a suffix, or does it? The base word here is Gorge which is derived from Throat and the suffix -ous which roughly adds the quality of full of , or having the air of the noun it follows. Am I to assume that the composed word then means full of throat? I can use the common linguistical backward logic to assume this means that the subject described is full of the quality that makes one want to drop his/her jaw in wonder such as described by similar adjectives like awesome and wonderful, but that’s a little vague. I don’t like to make decisions based on vaguarities. I also find that the English word was derived from a French one that had already been coined from elements comprising Latin roots. Thus, I rule out grammar as a viable guide because we already stole the word from a language that has never made sense to me anyway and look to usage for my direction. The word hasn’t been used before as far as I know, so I can’t really rely on usage either, can I? Well; I have gone through the process of eliminating possible guidelines and arrived at the fall back principle of conveying the intended idea, but I have yet to research the other word from which I procured the suffixes. It would be surmisable from my own understanding of the mind at hand that I took the suffixes from the word Fabulous, or perhaps Marvelous. Let’s choose Fabulous for the sake of eliminating additional complications and simply dissect it. We already know that the final suffix is -ous, or the quality of, so we can put that in a drawer. Now we need to look at Fabul which is a Latin term for the concept of a story that isn’t true such as the English word Fable, yet the word Fabulous in English comes directly from the Latin cognate fabulosus spelled with a little line above the “a” and the “o” which I can’t write with any of my international keyboards and which you’ll simply have to imagine as being present. There’s no sense taking apart a word that came to us as a complete package, so I’ll simply accept the fact that I can’t steal a suffix from a word that doesn’t legally have one. That would be like removing a limb from a perfectly sound being simply to add it to some other being that wasn’t truly lacking a complete set of limbs to begin with. I have now definitely arrived at the conclusion that neither grammar nor usage will suffice to guide me in determining the correctishness of my new word, and I embark upon the only remaining solution which is to survey the several million native speakers of English inhabiting this wonderful and awe inspiring world we call earth and ask them if they understood what I meant. Wait!; there is another solution. I can simply open the drawer of infinite rules and exceptions designed to make what should in all reality be a simple process into a very confusing and dumbfounding complexity, the drawer of guidelines for the English language, and pull out the mutual understanding that we should at all times make every effort to say what we want to say in as clear and concise a way as possible and in as few words as is feasible. I want to apply this rule here and state that my new adjective combines the ideas of Gorgeous and Fabulous to represent a sense of jaw-dropping quality with the added wonder instigated by the unbelievable beauty of the scene I was witnessing at the time. There you have it; I have coined a new word, and you are welcome to use it any time you wish. If anyone should question its validity, you can point them in the direction of this in-depth study and in so doing enhance the intelectuality of their current bank of knowledge. I would not, however, suggest you use the word in the game of Scrabble because I am most infatigorically opposed to playing games with words.

For anyone interested in the construction of the photo of the Aprilia bike, here is an explanation. / The original photo was taken in RAW, which when processed I enhanced both vibrance and saturation. / Once converted into a jpeg I opened it into Photoshop Elements 6. / First I converted the picture into black and white, using Enhance then Black and White. I think I used the Infrared setting for this. / Then I went to Filter, Stylize and Solarize. / Still in Filter, Adjustments and Equalize. / At the end of this process any metal should really shine and chrome comes out especially well. / I then opened the colour picture again as a new layer and put my creation on top of it. / Using the eraser tool set at 100% I then picked out the red on the bike. / Lastly I reduced the noise in the photo and cropped it to make it look as neat and tidy as possible. / / The other version is one layer of the picture from RAW the same as before, then Filter and Threshold to make the background. / The bike is cut from a solarized colour version of the picture using Image then Magic Extractor. / Then put the two together as layers with the bike as the top layer and use the eraser tool again to tidy up the bike from where it was cut out. I just love Photoshop! All the best Nigel / / /
