The sky turned pink for just a minute before the sun rose up over the horizon. Many thanks to Geoff for the inspiration of the title.

Hair and makeup by me, Model is … me :P I was going for 18th Century English Aristocracy with a modern twist and a bit of sass, which I believe the Vivianne Westwood brand encompasses.

Location: / St. Margaret’s Bay, Kent, England Map: / Multimap Date and Time: / 16 August 2008, 6.14 a.m. Camera details: / ISO 200 : f/22 : 1/4 second : 18mm : Nikon D40 : Nikon 18-55mm lens Shot narrative: / Known as White Cliffs Country and one of England’s most famous natural landmarks according to the Natural Trust, the cliffs extend a few miles to the north to St Margaret’s Bay. Captured in the early morning light the glow of these magnificent cliffs is amazing. Unfortunately due to erosion, parts of these cliffs are falling into the sea and the section of beach I usually visit at St Margaret’s Bay differs each time I go with new rocks that were once cliff now at the water’s edge.

The Aos Sidhe (pronounced “ess shee”), are a powerful, supernatural race comparable to the fairies or elves of other traditions. / They live in an invisible world that coexists with the world of humans. / The Gaelic Otherworld is seen as being closer at the times of dusk and dawn, therefore this is seen as a time special to the Aos Sidhe, as are some of the festivals such as Samhain and Midsummer. The Aos Sidhe are generally described as stunningly beautiful, though they can also be terrible and hideous. I cursed myself for walking too deep into the forest and missing seeing the sunset from the view point high on the hillside like i intended, but the evening rays brought colour to the forest like I wouldnt have imagined. / The forest is very much still in green, but the backlighting from the sunset has given such warmth to the leaves. This is La Courtine, one of the most beautiful cliff I’ve ever seen. La Courtine is part of the amazing rocky coast around Etretat in Upper Normandy, France, altogether known as Les Failases d’Etretat. I took this picture last August, on a very windy – as usual over there – late afternoon. / I wanted to have the sea looking as much smooth as possible, but I was in full daylight, as it was around 19:30 hours. Even with the overcasted sky, and even full stopping down the lens, the exposure time was only 1/2 seconds, a too fast time to move the sea surface. Using a polarizer and a 8x ND filter I gained 5 more stops, obtaining therefore, with a slight over-exposure, 20 secs of exposure time. Finally, I used a graduated filter to darken the sky, while keeping a correct exposure on the cliffs and the sea. / This allowed me to give the sea surface a watercolour paint look, and I also obtained a slight movement in the clouds, thanks to the strong wind. Taken a few miles east of Leicester, near Allexton. Its that time in the UK, just before the wheat gets harvested – heavy heads beginning to nod gently under the weight of the grain, and the weather unable to decide whether it is summer or not, threatening to flatten the crop, just it is ready. Leicestershire is full of distant horizons like this, and the Barley is all but in now, much of the ground already having been put under the plough in readiness for the next crop.

This is my tribute to one of the most innovative films I´ve ever seen in years. / The Pillow Book is a 1996 film by UK director Peter Greenaway; main character is Nagiko, a Japanese model. / “The film is a rich and artistic melding of dark modern drama with idealized Chinese and Japanese cultural themes and settings, and centers around body painting.” / “As a young girl in Japan, Nagiko’s father paints characters on her face, and her aunt reads to her from “The Pillow Book”, the diary of a 10th-century lady-in-waiting. Nagiko grows up, obsessed with books, papers, and writing on bodies, and her sexual odyssey (and the creation of her own Pillow Book) is a “parfait mélange” of classical Japanese, modern Chinese, and Western film images.” Well, for those who haven´t seen this film, I highly recommend it. Main female figure with clothes and accesories and props conform a cinema4D render; the rest was done in postwork by blending photo-layers and a bit of digital painting.

Following historical surveys such as Creative Art In England by William Johnstone (1936 and 1950), Nikolaus Pevsner attempted a definition in his 1956 book The Englishness of English Art, as did Sir Roy Strong in his 2000 book The Spirit of Britain: A narrative history of the arts, and Peter Ackroyd in his 2002 book The Origins of the English Imagination. Although medieval English painting, mostly religious, had a strong national tradition and was at times influential on the rest of Europe, this was in decline from the 15th century and the Protestant Reformation not only brought the tradition to an abrupt stop but resulted in the destruction of almost all wall-paintings.
