A 3 frame HDR image of Freshwater Bay depicting the Chalk Cliff formations and the start of Tennyson Downs. Canon 400D, Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM lens at 20mm, ISO 100 at f22. I had to stand perilously close to the edge of the cliffs to obtain this shot. What pleased me apart from the view was the clarity of the water (English Channel) which enables a view of the submerged chalk strata. The view shows:- the rock in the left foreground is known as Mermaid Rock and was formed after a cliff fall in 1968. To the rear right of this rock is the remains of the Arch Rock which was destroyed in a storm in 1992. The rock in the centre of the image is Stag Rock – so named because reputedly a Stag lept from the cliff onto the rock when being hunted! The small town of Freshwater is famous for being the home of Alfred Lord Tennyson the great poet. He died here in is home ‘Farringford’ in 1892. He wrote of Farringford:- _ “Where, far from noise and smoke of town / I watch the twilight falling brown, / All round a careless-ordered garden, / Close to the ridge of a noble down.”_ The Downs rising from the coast in the background are named after Tennyson and just around the distant headland of white cliffs are the famous ‘Needles’ with it’s lighthouse. Freshwater was also home to the great Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron whose home, Dimbola Lodge’ is now a museum dedicated to her work. Info extracted from Wikipedia.
