It was a cold day and the tide was far out meaning that parts of the beach that are usually cut off by the tide were accessable and I could walk a mile or so along the beach from the car park to reach this spot.

It managed to shield me from the gale force winds for a while if nothing else.

This was a particularly cold morning with frost and ice still on the pathways and roads.

Every Sunday a steam train makes it way down from Bristol to Kingswear filled with steam enthusiasts, mainly on the main Paddington to Penzance line. Quite exciting to see it pass Dawlish at about 40MPH with the whistle blowing and people cheering it on it’s way along the scenic coastal section of the trip.

An early morning seascape from my neighbouring town of Paignton as the sun was rising and giving a pleasing warm glow to the old pier. I am always fascinated at how gulls seem to settle down during a sunrise or sunset, there were dozens in flight a few minutes before I took this shot and as the sun broke through, all but a few had settled down on the roof of the pier buildings, adding to that eerie calm of the sunrise. Nikon D100 / 38mm / F7.1 for 1/200sec.

I’ve just returned from a most enjoyable holiday in Cornwall and hope you will enjoy seeing some of the beauty that the county has to offer the visitor. This composition is taken looking Eastwards from near Pendeen lighthouse on the North coast, as I walked down the track and past masses of bluebells and other wildflowers, the view along the rugged coast looked particularly beautiful. A sheltered golden beach with nobody on it, the rugged coast and the Atlantic breakers were our only companions, perhaps you can understand why I choose to spend many of my holidays in Cornwall rather than going overseas. Mullion Cove is situated below the village of Mullion on the West coast of the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. The little harbour is owned and maintained by the National Trust, this is the view I managed by climbing along the rocks at the end of the harbour wall and looking out between the rocks to the sea during my recent holiday. Even on a fine day like this, the sea was quite choppy but I loved the aqua marine tones of it in the sunshine, I certainly would never attempt to get to my vantage point when the sea wasn’t so calm, the Atlantic waves crash off these rocks spectacularly at times. Whitesand Bay is situated a few miles from Lands End on Cornwall’s rugged North coast, a very popular destination for water sports enthusiasts and moreso for people like myself who enjoy the natural beauty and peace of the location. I took this image from the high ground above Sennen Cove looking down and along the mile long golden sands of Sennen Beach towards Cape Cornwall, some three miles in the distance. The pink flowers in the foreground are Pink Seathrift and they grace the coast of Cornwall in early Summer, there were only about six people on the beach the day I was there and they were walking along the beach watching the Atlantic waves rolling in, so peaceful. The Botallack mine was part of the St. Just mining complex that mined the hard rock for black tin and copper for centuries. Many generations of Cornish families were employed in this dangerous industry till the stocks of black tin and prices for the ore made it unworkable. Situated a few miles from Lands End on the rugged North coast of Cornwall, this image is of the Crown Engine Pump House which was at it’s peak in the early nineteenth century, the main shaft from it, the Boscawen Shaft reaches under the Atlantic Ocean diagonally for some 800 metres, most of the other mine pump houses are situated on the cliff tops high above this one. The promontory that the engine house is sited on is Crown Rock, the seam of black tin ore is very visible in this image just above sea level. though the many different colours of ore are also visible on the rocky headland. There is always a lot of wave activity in this rugged cove, even on a fine Summer’s day like this the Ocean is very choppy and I wanted to capture the wave action as well as the detail on the mine and cliff so quite a number of exposures were tried. Embleton Bay – Northumberland This was a particular significant sunrise for me. I left home at 1am, drove two hours and forty minutes to location, tried to get some sleep, walked about thirty minutes down a beach that I have never been to in the dark and set up for the sunrise. Got some very good photographs and was happy with my instinct to just go somewhere for a sunrise. The colours that a sunrise give, is to me very therapeutic, they warm one up from within. Forget about medication etc, get people involved in nature and see the difference.

Originally uploaded in March ‘08, this was a capture of the storm that hit SW England that same month. / This was taken from the bridge at Dawlish Railway Station, Devon, England. / Despite the rough weather, the trains continued to run, and this stretch of track is the most expensive to maintain, due to the battering it gets from the sea. / This is a common sight in Dawlish during the winter months, and sometimes during the Summer months also. This picture was originally tonemapped by Dave Warren and I have revamped it a little bit to give it a slightly different look. Thanks again to Dave for his help with this.
