    Quote from Charles Darwin

  • The Thylacine – “Thylacinus cynocephalus” , Tasmanian Tiger, Marsupial Wolf or as it is fondly called where I come from – The Nannup Tiger….is one of Australia’s most intriguing biological ironies. / Supposedly only existing on the island of Tasmania, these amazing creatures – a seeming blend of carnivous wolf and kangaroo, were hunted to extinction in the days of early settlement because they were blamed for killing livestock. The last known thylacine died in a Hobart zoo in 1936. / However, the truth is, they have also existed on mainland Australia, and they still do. These marsupials, like a medium sized dog, with trademark stripes, carry their young in a backward opening pouch. Like a kangaroo, they use their long stiff tail and hind legs to take off, gaining speed, before dropping their front legs to the ground to run like a cat. Many sightings have referred to them as cougars or panthers, as thylacines appear in many colours including black or grey and at times without stripes. To date, there has been no significant proof of their existence, and the fact remains that their extinct status is a harsh lesson to humanity, that we wield a terrible power over the creatures of this earth, and our insensitive treatment of them leads to greater loss than gain. / But, there have been countless sightings of the thylacine, and / documentations of their existence over the years, yet to date, no hard evidence has surfaced, except the credibility of those who know. / My Father is one such person – finding this amazing creature in a kangaroo snare when he was a boy (and naturally no one cared back in the early 1930s!) captured his interest and he became a total believer who has spent his life to date trying to REprove their existence. His lifetime of knowledge has lead to the publication of a book (“The Haunt of the Marsupial Wolf” – reprinted many times over) and participation in many televised documentaries, including in recent years, an AnimalX show for Foxtel discovery channel. / Having grown up with this awareness, I am just as intrigued by the existence of our most elusive marsupial. I too have seen the “tiger” on a number of occasions, frequently see its five toed footprints (dogs have four toes).... and even as recent as last week, heard it screaming outside my house (not a nice sound on a cold dark night, I can tell you…..!) During winter is the time they seem to go out calling, looking for a mate, and most winters we have nights where we can hear their chilling screams as they wander from the state forest through the cover of thick scrub. So I walk most days, always with my camera in hand, and wait for that magic opportunity to prove its existence. Yet somehow, I also feel that to do so, to end the argument once and for all, would also destroy a valuable lesson for humanity…. and place the tiger back in the spotlight where it would be endangered once again. The question for me, and quite a lot of others I know, is do we really WANT the world to know of its status, or whereabouts? Perhaps the Thylacine knows that its greatest protection is the air of mystery and unknown, that haunts its footsteps on this Earth and we should honour that and just let it be.

  • It lives in the lowland and coastal forests, coming out at night to hunt small insects, birds, bats and reptiles. It keeps itself hidden amongst the branches of trees which is where it lives. During the day the Philippine Tarsier will sleep in hollowed out logs or branches in the trees which it lives. The Tarsier species is considered endangered, with a decreasing habitat due to deforestation and the fact that it does not take to well to captivity, the management of the survival of the Philippine Tarsier is as important as ever.

  • The threatened Jaguar is the only living big cat of the American continent. The Jaguar is a roaring cat sometimes confused with the leopard, both having spots in rosettes, but those of the Jaguar have a black spot at the centre. A Jaguar has golden or brownish yellow fur and many spots. The spots along its back and sides are light-coloured with dark borders. The spots on its head, legs and underside are black. Black Jaguars live in South America. They live in forests, shrubby areas, and grasslands – wherever they can hide. They hunt mainly on the ground and at night, and eat almost any kind of animal or fish. The powerful Jaguar has remarkable strength, a good climber and an accomplished swimmer. They measure up to 2.6m long, including their 75cm tail. They weigh up to 136 kilograms. / The Jaguar symbolised strength and courage to the ancient Maya Indians, who considered the animal a god. The Jaguars once ranged from the southern states of the USA south over almost the entire South American continent, but are now extinct in almost all areas close to human settlements. It lives only in Mexico and Central and South America. Jaguars, the largest neotropical cats with the most prized fur, have been ruthlessly hunted. It faces serious danger from fur hunters and environmental changes. The USA now prohibits the import and export of Jaguars or their pelts. / The ‘Lost City Collection’ wildlife painting portrays the handsome and powerful Jaguar while creating an awareness of their plight.

  • The Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) is a giant forest raptor endemic to the Philippines. It is considered one of the largest and most powerful eagles in the world. Unfortunately, it is also one of the world’s rarest and certainly among its most critical endangered species. The eagle is known to be geographically restricted to the islands of Luzon, Samar, Leyte and Mindanao.

  • The endangered Tiger is a majestic, solitary animal being the largest member of the cat family. In terms of camouflage, the Tiger is one of the best equipped of all the carnivores. Used to defend its territory, the Tiger’s roar can be heard up to 2km away. A very strong swimmer, the Tiger avoids the midday sun by bathing in water. Found in hot dry scrub jungle, teak and bamboo forests and tropical mangrove estuaries all areas close to rivers and lakes. The Tiger is considered to have evolved in China over one million years ago. There are eight subspecies of Tiger the Siberian, Bengal, South China, Indochinese, Sumatran and with three already extinct, the Caspian, Bali and Javan tigers. Legally protected against being hunted, the immediate threat to its survival is the growing demand for its parts for use in oriental medicine. Also the insidious destruction of tiger habitat and decline of prey populations places the tiger in severe danger of extinction. / The ‘Exotica Collection’ wildlife painting portrays the beauty of the strong and striking Bengal Tiger while creating an awareness of their plight.

  • Red Pandas are found in the temperate forests of the Himalayas and some high mountain areas of China and Myanmar (Burma). Anatomical features indicate Red Pandas are most closely related to the racoon and similar to giant pandas and bears but are now in a ‘family’ of their own. Like Giant Pandas, Red Pandas have an extra ‘thumb’ which is simply an enlarged bone. In captivity Red Pandas can live up to 14 years but it is not known how long they live in the wild. / The Chinese name for Red Panda is hunho or firefox, due to their colour and similar size to a fox. The red panda was first discovered in 1821, 48 years before the giant pandas were found in 1869. The major threats confronting Red Pandas are loss and fragmentation of habitat due to deforestation; poaching for the pet and fur trades; and competition from domestic livestock. The fur of Red Pandas is used to make hats and clothing by local people in China. The fur hat with its long, luxurious tail at the back looks beautiful and warm. In Yunnan Province, this type of hat is still desired by newlyweds, because it was regarded as a talisman for a happy marriage in the past. The Red Panda is nearly extinct in the western part of its range due to human interference in its natural habitat. / The ‘Exotica Collection’ wildlife painting portrays the beauty of the shy Red Panda while creating an awareness of their plight.
