The bindi is for spiritual insight. The red sky at night is a sailor’s delight…for a red sky at night indicates smooth seas on the morrow! • Heart of Gold
    by Karin Taylor

    US$4.99–US$114.00

Sales of this Design? – 1 sale so far :) / Heart of Gold by Neil Young I am thinking of you Paul, and sending all my love, thoughts and prayers while you are in hospital undergoing heart surgery…. oct 08 / Heart of Gold is a mixed media production on watercolour paper / and one of my most recent paintings The painting itself was inspired by a response to Sylvia, the character in Bryce Courtney’s novel who led the Children’s Crusades during medieval times. In my painting, Sylvia is on a quest, just as I am, always searching for a heart of gold. She has the key to unlocking goodness and kindness and truth hanging from her belt, and she carries a staff with a beautiful flower and wears a crown, symbolising that she is both shepherdess and a leader of her people. Her horse also wears a heart around his neck. They rely on one another for support and encouragement during difficult times.

When hard times hit, you have to pray for a breakthrough. This image is my prayer for a breakthrough and perhaps it will become your prayer, too. Thank you Ruthie for your encouragement. Though the fig tree may not blossom, / Nor fruit be on the vines; / Though the labor of the olive may fail, / And the fields yield no food; / Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, / And there be no herd in the stalls— / Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, / I will joy in the God of my salvation. / -Habakkuk 3:17-18 Digital Mixed Media

  • Leaving Purgatory
    by Sophie Shapiro

    US$4.99–US$114.00

When he had brought his lecture to an end, / the lofty scholar looked into my face, / searching to see if I seemed satisfied; And I, already thirsting for more drink, / kept silent, wondering: “Could he, perhaps, / be tired of all this questioning of mine?” / / But that true father, sensing my desire, / which was too timid to express itself, / spoke first, and thus encouraged me to speak. / / I said: “Master, the light you shed has made / my sight so keen that now I clearly see / all that your words mean or what they imply. So I beseech you, father, kind and dear, / define love for me, please, which is, you say / the source of every virtue, every vice.” “Now focus your mind’s eye on what I say,” / he said, “and you will clearly understand / the error of the blind who lead the blind. / / The Soul at birth, created quick to love, / will move toward anything that pleases it, / as soon as pleasure causes it to move. / / Words by Dante Best viewed in large format Acrylics, ink, graphite, pigment and gold leaf on paper

  • Mark, an American soldier, gave his life for his fellow countrymen in the war in Iraq. The only one of his unit to survive the initial blast, he battled for life as he was flown back to the United States for medical care. His family flocked to his side and surrounded him with love in his final hours. Not long after his arrival in America, he died on home soil in the arms of his loved ones. His mother Kim, my husband’s first cousin, wrote this poem, “Is it you?” as she struggled with grief and loneliness for her young son. She asked me if I had a dragonfly photo to accompany her poem which relates the tale of the dragonflies that seem to hover near her in a show of consolation. This image is our collaboration, our joint effort, in memory of Mark Graham who defended the cause of freedom with steadfast determination and a valiant heart. May he rest in peace and may the angels surround him and his family now and forever. (100% of proceeds from sales will go to the Mark W. Graham Foundation; see another image, “Is it you?” in this portfolio if you’d like a green dragonfly. It will print better in the card size). Taken from the Mark W. Graham Foundation website, here is additional information about the foundation to which all funds from the sales of these images will be donated: “The Mark W. Graham Foundation is a non-profit organization which provides support for young people of character and military families in crisis. It honors the legacy of Mark Graham, a fallen soldier whose strength of character and gift of service to his country are an inspiration to all who knew him. Mark was a Lafayette, La., native and his death opened the community’s eyes to the reality of war and the sacrifice soldiers make in their fight to keep our country free. He was married to Stephanie for a little more than a year when he died. Mark was 22 years old.”

She was originally named Lydia Liliu Loloku Walania Wewehi Kamaka’eha, Lydia Liliuokalani Paki, and also known as Lydia Kamakaʻeha Paki, with the chosen royal name of Liliʻuokalani. She would find herself in music. In her memoirs she wrote: “to compose was as natural to me as to breathe. This gift remains a source of the greatest consolation.” She wrote over 165 songs and chants.
