Welcome to 2009. To kick off the new year, l want to reflect a bit on how constructive comments can encourage members to create new work and grow artistically. The majority of the member comments on my artwork pages are less than 100 characters in length (including spaces). That’s not a lot of information, but they do provide just the right amount of inspiration. The best comments motivate members to create more work or to see their existing work in a new way. Comments are also incredibly valuable if they come from peers that work in similar mediums. In my case, printmaking is a niche medium, so comments from other printmakers regarding technique are always welcomed. And at a visceral level, comments simply feel good; they bond us to the larger RedBubble community. Comments can also help guide art buyers. For example, your comment can link to an artwork or written work on RedBubble that’s similar in topic or aesthetic. When linking, it’s best to link text that best describes the image or subject matter that the member will see post-click. Here’s a real-world example: “What a wonderful photograph of the Perth waterscape. I especially like the way you highlighted the horizon and ramp/dock – great technique using the prolonged exposure. Check out this photograph of Perth by EOS20.” The “medium-plus-subject” link structure is helpful to readers and search engines alike. You can use this tactic on your personal websites and blogs in order to send visitors to your RedBubble pages (or other websites). RedBubble typically sees a dip in website chatter during the holidays, but the silence ends as members return from holiday, post new work, and reconnect with those they follow. / I find the patina of age very intriguing and exciting to recreate in paint…I always have cuts of MDF and Masonite primed with gesso waiting in the wings, ready for when inspiration hits me…lately I’ve been preoccupied with doors and things to do with doors….I made this door old…very old…it has withstood the test of time and all kinds of weather and has been painted many times, attesting to a tale of many owners…lately someone dressed it with a shiny new red door knob…why? if it could talk it would tell many stories.... Mark, an American soldier, gave his life for his fellow countrymen in the war in Iraq. The only one of his unit to survive the initial blast, he battled for life as he was flown back to the United States for medical care. His family flocked to his side and surrounded him with love in his final hours. Not long after his arrival in America, he died on home soil in the arms of his loved ones. His mother Kim, my husband’s first cousin, wrote this poem, “Is it you?” as she struggled with grief and loneliness for her young son. She asked me if I had a dragonfly photo to accompany her poem which relates the tale of the dragonflies that seem to hover near her in a show of consolation. This image is our collaboration, our joint effort, in memory of Mark Graham who defended the cause of freedom with steadfast determination and a valiant heart. May he rest in peace and may the angels surround him and his family now and forever. (100% of proceeds from sales will go to the Mark W. Graham Foundation; see another image, “Is it you?” in this portfolio if you’d like a green dragonfly. It will print better in the card size). Taken from the Mark W. Graham Foundation website, here is additional information about the foundation to which all funds from the sales of these images will be donated: “The Mark W. Graham Foundation is a non-profit organization which provides support for young people of character and military families in crisis. It honors the legacy of Mark Graham, a fallen soldier whose strength of character and gift of service to his country are an inspiration to all who knew him. Mark was a Lafayette, La., native and his death opened the community’s eyes to the reality of war and the sacrifice soldiers make in their fight to keep our country free. He was married to Stephanie for a little more than a year when he died. Mark was 22 years old.”

In his sumptuous exploration of food images (Food in Painting), Kenneth Bendiner states, that ” food for the art historian can be the one area where conscious rules and dignified ideas need not hold sway - the real urges and concerns of a painter or his society can rise to the surface. There’s a certain freedom in the margins of art - where experiments and indulgence can operate—in other words more can be learned about someone from his backyard, than from the street façade of his house.” The latest painting from the series” Delicious” is “Scone with Berries and Cream. The Berries are a type of black berry, available all year round here… Watercolour on Arches Paper…Featured in Happy Haven… I grew up in a society where tea time was sacrosanct… dashing into the house after school, at four o’clock in the afternoon straight to the table which tea was laid, was an everyday thing… the weather was hot and the tea was refreshing… after several cups, one felt at peace with the world. Clotted Cream came from England in jars or tins but my mother also whipped up a wonderful cream from the top of the milk that came straight to our home from a neighboring farm every day…dinner was much later on in the evening ... You and I are great souls. / And we come together for a time. / We meet over a cup of tea here on earth. Shall we leave our shell and join with each other? / Shall we put down our shield and armor? / What will become of us if we do? / What horrible fate awaits us if we are defenseless? Tea is a time for love and tenderness without fear. / It is a time for sharing and learning and growing. / Come now, leave the battle gear behind. / Brave with me and let’s have tea. / Strawberry tart is the second in the series “Delicious”... Watercolour on Sennelier Not Paper… In the description that accompanied “Blueberry Tart” I referred to the work of a famous American artist called “Wayne Thiebaud”, who stated that his subject matter came out of a genuine experience from his life, from the American world, in which he was privileged to be. He went on to say that it was the most genuine thing which he had done. His subject matter is a commentary on the abundance that is a part of American society and the longings and desires ( e.g. all those cakes in a row) that go along with it. Like Thiebaud, this new series is definitely a reflection of my particular experience… it is at once a commentary on the richness of our culture and at the same time a reflection of my daily life… in addition to being a painter, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen… my belief is that since I have to cook to feed my family I had better do it well, (I have an abhorrence of wasted time), so to that end I have almost as many cookbooks as art books, in fact I have a collection of several hundred cook books… I have mentioned before, that there is a peacefulness, a feeling of rightness when I sit down to paint food… although all painting brings me pleasure, there is a special joy when I paint food… it is as though it is what I was meant to do ... This new series is definitely a reflection of my particular experience… it is at once a commentary on the richness of our culture and at the same time a reflection of my daily life…food is essential to life…suffice it to say we can’t exist with out it ...
