Here’s a story for you. / Growing up in Cairns, all I wanted was to be cold. It was hot all year round, with high humidity and a not what you would call ‘winter’. I became interested (read: obsessed) with weather and constantly saw that a spot in Tasmania called Mount Wellington was continually one of the coldest spots in Australia. In 2005 we had the opportunity to move from the Whitsundays to Hobart – and all I wanted was to live as close to Mt Wellington as possible. And now I do. Last year during winter I went to the summit of Mt Wellington and on the way up saw a forest of ‘frozen trees’. And that’s how this photo came to exist – standing amongst the trees in a gentle breeze (which in itself is rare on Mt Wellington), with nothing more than the sound of the shutter button and the ice dropping from the trees. Truly a wonderful experience.. Can you tell, I’m getting excited – winter is coming.. and quite possibly the first snowfalls for Mt Wellington since Christmas (yes, it snowed in Tasmania on Christmas Eve and Day!) this week! Hooray!

I love winter for the myriad of little treasures one can find at your feet. Here, Ice along the Tieton River wrapping a small stone in the heart shaped embrace of Winter.

On a very cold but sunny Valentine’s Day in February 2007, melting snow on my roof overflowed from the gutter to refreeze on a nearby burning bush (Euonymus alata). The ice buildup got even thicker two days later (as seen here) as more snow melted off the roof and onto the already coated branches. Ice storms in the Appalachians states is a “given” in winter months, although, this one produced a disastrous condition and total shut down in many of the states that had never been experienced prior to this weather event!! Kentucky was one of the hardest hit states of the storm Ice Storm Jan 2009 Kentucky

PLEASE VIEW LARGE TO SEE DETAIL!!! The woman strolled through the market and spotted a man selling jewellery. She was always on the lookout for an interesting piece to add to her collection, and so she stopped at his stall to browse his wares. When she first saw the selection of amber and silver rings she was immediately drawn to one that seemed to be speaking to her. The old man running the stall smiled and he offered for the woman to try on the intriguing piece of jewellery. He told her that each of his amber rings were hand made with love, each piece was special and as unique and individual as the one who wears it. He mused about how extraordinary the amber stone is in itself, and how one never knows what they will find trapped, encased for eternity, inside. Bugs, leaves…ancient things; pieces of history preserved. The woman really couldn’t afford to buy it, but she was so enchanted by the ring that she spent some of her grocery money in order to have it. She would be tightening her belt that week but, she thought, she needed to lose a few pounds anyway. She paid the man his money, and she put on the ring. Every once in a while, the light would catch the amber and cause the woman to stop whatever she was doing to admire the colour and beauty of the handmade piece of jewellery and the stone that was its marvellous centre piece. It wasn’t until later, after she had gone home and was tucked up in her bed that she took the time to really examine her new ring in detail. She took it off of her finger, turning it this way and that. Suddenly she saw her! A woman, a tiny woman – who looked remarkably like herself, was staring back at her from the stone. The miniature her was INSIDE the stone. Then she remembered what the old man in the market had said, gleam in his eye, “One never knows what they will find…” And, what a find, indeed. This ring was obviously more than a work of art to be worn: this ring was magic, and had a woman, so very like herself, imprisoned within it! She tried to speak to the woman, but the lady of the ring only smiled a sad smile; she spoke nothing in response to the frantic questions of, “Are you ok?”, “How did you get in there?”, Can I do anything for you?”, WHAT SHOULD I DO??!!” The lady was distraught, but being that it was late she couldn’t call anyone to come to her. And, she didn’t know what she would say to someone anyway. So, she determined to try to sleep the best she could, and first thing in the morning she would go straight back to the man at the market and ask him the questions! She was astounded when the next morning came before she even knew she had gone sound to sleep. She had slept like the dead, but it was as if only a moment had passed instead of the seven hours that had gone by. She hurried to look at her ring. The tiny woman was gone! “Huh! I’m losing it, I am!”, she remarked to herself as she shook her head. “I must have had too much sun yesterday. It was all a dream…a very odd and vivid dream, but a dream nonetheless. I read too many fantasy novels, I do” She got up and went about her day as usual. It was a very ordinary day. She all but nearly forgot about the night before and the strange dream she’d had. She wore her new ring, but hardly had time to give it a glance as she tended to her daily chores and errands. Then came night again. And bed. Once again she found herself admiring her ring. She recognised the little lady’s sad smile immediately when she saw it, and dropped the ring with a scream. “I’m going insane”, she cried. But, the woman in the ring looked up at her from the bed on which she and her prison had fallen. and shook her head as if to say, “You’re not crazy. You are really seeing what you’re seeing.” However, if she wasn’t crazy, just what was happening here? / to be continued…in your imagination… So…what do YOU think is going on? Hmmm…could be a Sorceress about. She goes by the title of Songmistress. Her name is Autumn. She posesses the magic of the Photoshop! (It’s my beautiful new aquisition of amber, which has so captured my imagination that I put myself inside it)
