“Open for Business” Photography & Artwork / by Holly Kempe © An art gallery at the historic town of Silverton in outback New South Wales, Australia. “History with its flickering lamp stumbles along the trail of the past, trying to reconstruct its scenes, to revive its echoes, and kindle with pale gleams the passion of former days.” ~Winston Churchill Competition: Top Ten placement of the Outback Australia group.
This Emu was very happy to pose for me at the Melbourne Zoo. I fell in love with its eyes!
This very large bird with the goofy look is an Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) , one of Australia’s icons. / The Emu shares pride of place on the Australian Coat of Arms with a Kangaroo. (The reason a Kangaroo and Emu are depicted on our national symbol is that they can’t walk backwards). This dippy Emu was photographed during the Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club’s Christmas party at the Billabong Koala Sanctuary at Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, in very early Summer 2006. These are NOT very easy subjects to photograph as they are constantly on the move pacing up and down with their heads bobbing around. As my old Fuji S5500 is not renowned for his focusing speed, my frustration was beginning to show after about half an hour but persistence paid off in the end. Those curly bits on top of its head which add to the goofy expression are new feathers which have not fully developed. The emu walked slowly off in to the distance leaving only perfect footprints in the sand. Canunda National Park, Millicent, South Australia.
taken at Warrawong Sanctuary in the Adelaide Hills, this inquisitive bird came up to eyeball me as I took his pic.

Another set of emu tracks heading through the dunes, Canunda National Park, Millicent, South Australia. A pristine area where these birds roam free leaving just their footprints.
Its amazing what one “sees” while driving the endless kilometres across the Hay Plains
A collection of fleeting moments showing natures beauty and power.
i wanted to post something different to anything ive posted so far, found this…. A photo of my Tom Tom and Oomoo when we first got them, they were 6 days old in this photo. Tom Tom (female) is no longer with us, but Oomoo is and he lords it over our English Mastiff, who is himself 80 kg! I have always loved Emu’s so when Andrew suggested we get 2, i was so excited. For those of you not living in Australia, Emus are not usually pets. emu feathers are an amazing thing / feathers Aboriginal Emu dance these guys nailed it completely!!!!!!!
Emu’s have to be one of God’s weirdest creations. It shows He has a sense of humour. They are extremely curious and dumb, yet I never tire of seeing them as I drive throughout the vast Australian Outback. / Sue. Emu tracks following a fence line through a salt degraded water hole along the Coorong National Park South Australia. My apologies to those who have been visiting lately, I have been away from RB for some time and just starting to catch up on images and comments. This image was uploaded after constant harassment from a fellow bubbler Smarti77 who has always liked it and wanted me to test the waters here on RB. Canon 400D 18 -55 with polarising filter.
These birds have such amazing expressions. I just want to smile when I see their funny faces. And thesight of their long, skinny legs, racing across the terrain remind me of my son trying to escape a haircut. Acrylic paint on canvas textured acrylic paper. 16 inchesX12. Framed prints or canvas available at bigemptywall.co.uk
The Emu is a large flightless bird. They stand to be 1.5 to 2 metres tall, and on average weight 36 kilograms. They have 3 toes, and long legs which allows them to run extremely fast. In this species, the female is larger than the male. Emu’s feed on grass, leaves and small insects. They live all over Australia in grasslands. The female lays up to 20 eggs, which are large and are soft dark green in colour. These eggs are often prized not only by humans for decoration pieces, but by animals as a food source. The male incubates the eggs for a period of 7-8 weeks, and does not leave the nest for this period. When the eggs hatch, the male emu looks after the hatchlings for another six months. The Emu is the world’s third largest bird. The Ostrich and the Cassowary take the top positions. / The nest of an Emu can be up to 1.5 metres wide! And they make a funny gutteral noise much like a turkey on steroids lol ! / / Olympus 570uz
