History is a gallery of pictures in which there are few originals and many copies. / ~ Alexis de Tocqueville / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / In this image I was hoping to capture the essence of the small outback community of Silverton that is so typically Australian. Not only were the Mad Max movies made there and numerous other movies and advertisements, it is a town full of history and wonderful eccentric artists. This is Peter Brown’s gallery perched on top of a barren hillside as you drive into town. His emu caricatures are a delight! / -—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- / Thank you to everyone in Redbubbles Outback Australia group for voting Open for Business in the top ten of their competition.

The Genyornis were huge flightless birds (considered megafauna, kick arse!) that roamed Australia’s central and eastern regions, and existed until at least 30,000 years ago – around the time the first Australians migrated. This very large bird with the goofy look is an Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae), one of Australia’s icons. / The emu shares pride of place on the Australian Coat of Arms with a kangaroo. (The reason a kangaroo and emu are depicted on our national symbol is that they can’t walk backwards). This dippy emu was photographed during my camera club’s Christmas party at the Billabong Koala Sanctuary at Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, in very early Summer 2006. These are NOT very easy subjects to photograph as they are constantly on the move pacing up and down with their heads bobbing around. As Mr Fuji is not renowned for his focussing speed, my frustration was beginning to show after about half an hour but persistence paid off in the end. Those curly bits on top of its head which add to the goofy expression are new feathers which have not fully developed. Camera: Fuji S5500; RAW; Aperture Priority; f/3.1; 1/140sec; 34mm; WB Daylight; ISO 100; Spot Metering; Centre Focussing; Low powered Flash; Hand held. / Processing: S7RAW & Photoshop CS. Emu’s have to be one of God’s weirdest creations. It shows He has a sense of humour. They are extremely curious and dumb, yet I never tire of seeing them as I drive throughout the vast Australian Outback. / Sue. Emu near Coonamble, outback NSW

I found these emu tracks in the wonderful Little Drift dune field at Wilsons Promontory shortly after meeting their owners. Interestingly enough the emu is not endemic to the area and was introduced in the early days of the park. At the time national parks were a fairly new idea and were not managed in the same way that they are today. The thinking at the time was to manage them with more of an ark mentality and in accordance with this the Committee of Management introduce thirty non-indigenous species of fauna to the promontory between 1900 and 1941, including kangaroo’s wallabies, possums, wombats, lyrebirds, emu’s bandicoots and fish. Many were wholly unsuited to the habitat coming from places like Cape York (a tropical rainforest). Only the Eastern Grey Kangaroo and the Emu are known to have survived. Sixty plant species were also released. Coinciding with this was the eradication of the Dingo and the decimation of the Koala population with as many as 2,000 pelts a year being collected. Fortunately parks are managed much better these days. For more shots from this area check out my Wilsons Promontory gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society

Back again in Ockerroo where it seems sergeant Clappers Clarke, suffering a mild case of outback troppo disease, is going investment mental over the arrival of a bloke called Joe Mitsubishi…Big things are about to happen in the one dunny town of Ockerroo and it has nothing to do with emus.
