One of the most enchanting spectacles in Central Park is Belvedere Castle. From its perch on an immense outcropping of bedrock / called Vista Rock visitors to the Park can be enthralled by the view of the Delacorte Theater, Turtle Pond and the Great Lawn far below. / This Victorian structure with its two balconies rises up on one of the highest natural elevations in the Park. It is a silhouette of distinction from the surrounding landscape and a mystery to behold as it appears / through the tree branches to visitors who approach through the dense underbrush of the Ramble. / The Castle is also the home of the Henry Luce Nature Observatory. With its medieval stairways and ancient ambience along with the carefully thought out exhibits youngsters have a grand opportunity to learn about nature and the Park in a compelling environment. On the main level, nature exhibits with telescopes and microscopes are available to provide an extended dimension to the learning experience.

Grateful We Soar As Artists’ I am grateful that we are able to see things from different points of views as artists, and that we can appreciate one another’s unique style. One person can see beauty in a black and white image, while another finds beauty in an image full of color. One person can focus on macros, while another focuses on landscapes. / I selected Cora Wandel to do my collaboration with for a few reasons – her perspective and mine are on opposite ends when it comes to photography and I have always enjoyed looking at her photos. I have admired her perseverance in photography; as she suffers from Parkinson’s disease, which causes her hands to shake, imagine her frustration when taking pictures and how many she must have to take to get that one good picture that is mot blurred. / I bubbled Cora two weeks ago and told her about the competition and asked her if she would allow me to use one of her photos. She said she was honored and told me I could. I then bubbled mailed her back to let her know which photo I wanted to use – I had chosen her photo “A Colorless World” a photo of a tree in black and white. I e-mailed a few versions of this photo and asked her to chose the one she liked best. She e-mailed me back. We then e-mailed each other back to discuss the theme “Grateful”. We spoke on the phone about this topic also. / I finally e-mailed her this description and the photo for her final approval before posting it. / I worked in layers, I removed the background from “A Colorless World” photo. I set the A Colorless World to 70% opacity. I then merged it with a photo of a full moon I had taken. next I had a photo of the hawk i had taken I extracted it from the photo using the magic extractor tool – resized it, rotated it slightly and inserted it into the picture to have it look as if it were flying over the moon. finally i merged all of the layers and flattened the image. /

This image inspired a collaboration with Alison Pearce – who is a wonderful author and poet. / Alison Pearce On The Other Side The wooden gate off the picturesque country lane was partially open, as if in invitation. Colourful butterflies hovered over the weathered fence posts and a field of wildflowers could be glimpsed through the tree trunks shadowing the dusty lane. / I felt like I’d been there before and that an irresistible urge was pulling me forward now. Usually, I doubt my own instincts, but this felt so right. Some primeval part of my soul was insisting that this gate was the pathway I was meant to take, that the gate had indeed been left open just for me. / Head held high, I strode purposefully through the opening and down the path until I came upon a small bridge built across a clear stream. Leaning over the rail, I gazed in wonder at the beauty around me. / As I watched, a familiar form appeared amongst a patch of pink hollyhocks. I smiled as she raised her hand in welcome. My wife. My beautiful lost wife. / This was where I belonged. Had I known heaven was so beautiful, I’d have allowed my broken old body to succumb to this sweet song of peace long ago. © Alison Pearce 2008

i took some pictures of tulips that were in a colleagues classroom, the background included desks, chairs, the blackboard, books and other objects. i used photoshop to cut out the flowers, filled the background with leaves from the filler tool and then placed the tulips on the background. i created many variations of pictures using different backgrounds, my colleague is using them to create a border for her bulletin board. / the photos of the tulips were taken on april 2, 2008, staten island new york
