This is a collaboration between myself and Empress for WitheringMoons’ competition Secret Place I want to thank Kate for accepting the challenge of writing a new piece and to congratulate her on such a wonderful result, Dear Diary all written in a day! I only put her up to the challenge less than a day ago.. time zones mean nothing! Thanks also to WitheringMoon for such an inspiring Competition. Anyway, enough of me, over to Kate… Dear Diary Angel crouches atop the pillar, still as the monument she mimics. A sigh escapes her lips and her wings furl in a dark embrace as soft footfalls dance closer. ‘Sapphira. Don’t.’ Partway between the light and the dark, Sapphira spins. She’s a lily of a woman, a shining young thing with pearls and baby’s breath crowning ebony ringlets that spill down to tickle the book she holds. Her fingers tighten, clutching the volume close to her heart. ‘Once it’s gone, it’s dust and there’s no getting it back.’ Angel lands lightly on the Lane, boots soundless on the lush grass. ‘Not even a legendary love.’ / Sapphire stands proud, her shoulder back, steel infusing her spine. ‘I can. I will.’ / ‘No. I’m sorry, Sapphira.’ Angel’s regret is genuine and it colours her voice in shades of mauve. ‘I’m probably one of the few who knows that Lovers Lane is really a corruption of Lover Slain, and one of even less who knows who’s buried beneath out feet. And who you really are.’ ‘Congratulations.’ Sapphira’s smile is brief, a momentary quirk of plum-dark lips that fails to reach her midnight eyes. / ‘I know all that.’ Angel steps closer. ‘But I don’t know how you found the book.’ / Sapphira’s pale hand caresses the book which seems to arch into the stroke like a cat. ‘It found me. Eventually. It is my diary, after all.’ / ‘Ah, yes. A record of a young woman’s hopes and dreams, her wishes and secrets.’ / ‘Don’t forget potential blackmail material.’ / Angel folds her arms and nods thoughtfully. ‘Which is rather why I thought it was burnt with all your other belongings.’ / ‘Like heroes, books never die. They just go elsewhere.’ / ‘Have we covered the banter and cryptic taunts yet? Or are you done?’ / Sapphira glances up at the quarter moon riding low in the sky above Siren’s Gate. The pure light illuminates her face and her resolve. ‘I’m done. Done with waiting and for conditions to be met. I have the key to unlock Destiny’s Door and there is nothing left for me to lose.’ / Angel hums skeptically. ‘That’s what they all say until they’re proved wrong. Usually in some horribly messy fashion guaranteed to stain the brickwork.’ / ‘It doesn’t matter.’ Sapphira flicks the latch apart and skims through pages. The gold talisman ring on her left hand winks. / ‘It does if you have to clean up the mess,’ Angel points out. / Sapphira slices a sharp fingernail across her palm, cups her hand as the blood wells. A delicate frown distorts her brow. ‘The turning of the year, midway between Above and Below, between Before and After…’ / Angel wrinkles her nose as mists coalesce. For a popular nightspot Lovers Lane is lonely tonight, rife with aversions and small mercies. The mists cloud the boundaries, hiding the buildings, muffling the streetlights… and shifting the Lane to another plane. / Straight as a stiletto, green as a fairway, the Lovers Lane becomes the entire world. Mists hem its edges and frame the endpoints. Even mists don’t dare occlude the Deco Dinner or the gothic slendour of the Fata Morgana Tea Palace although they can reduce them to ghosts. / Sapphira shivers and the ruby liquid in the cup of her hand threatens to spill. ‘Almost.’ / ‘Hallow ground. Interesting.’ Angel’s wings retain the full rich colours of midnight, impervious to the half-tones that dominate this version of reality. Except for the verdant turf, herself, and the woman with book. ‘What exactly is your party trick, Sapphira?’ / Sapphira turns another page. She checks over her shoulder, compares behind with ahead and moves until she stands in the middle of the Lane. She drags the tip of her shoe across the ground and the grass unzips. ‘It won’t be a secret much longer.’ / ‘Yes, that’s what I’m concerned about.’ / Sapphira isn’t listening. Her focus is on the well of blood in her hand. Brighter than glory, precious as love, red as rage, it seeps from the slash across her heart and fate lines, closing in on the moment when it will overflow. She brings her hand in line with the break in the ground, starts to angle the outside edge down— / Angel catches Sapphira’s hand and forces it into a fist. / ‘No!’ / ‘That’s what I tried to tell you,’ Angels says. ‘Whatever you call up won’t be him. Just like you’re not you anymore.’ / Sapphira struggles. Angel grabs her other hand, tugs Sapphira round and up on to her toes. Angel’s hold is implacable, her expression gentle. ‘Sapphira. You’ve been dead for decades.’ / Sapphira’s lashes flutter. ‘Pardon?’ / ‘Denial and Belief are powerful forces and when you combine them…’ Angel winces. ‘Sorry.’ / ‘Oh.’ / Angel catches the diary as Sapphira dissolves. The weight of the book is a surprise, drags her arm down. The snap of Angel’s wings flaring for balance is one bruise too many and brings the Lane back into phase with Siren’s Gate. / The moon continues its serene journey and music escapes from the twelve bars between the Diner and the Palace, perhaps a little bluer than normal. / This time Angel’s sigh is heavy as regret in winter. She shakes her head. ‘The Forbidden Book Vault is getting close to full.’ (c) kate smith

Having decided what shape his future will take, the Fool strides forward. But he is impatient to make his future a full-grown reality. This is when he comes upon the Empress. Hair gold as wheat, a crown of stars, a white gown dotted with pomegranates. She rests back on her throne surrounded by an abundance of grain and a lush garden. It is possible that she is pregnant. Kneeling, the Fool relates to her his story. And she, in turn, smiles a motherly smile and gently gives him this advice: “Like newly planted grain or a child in the womb, a new life, a new love, a new creation is fragile. It requires fertile soil, patience and nurturing, it needs love and attention. Only this will bring it to fruition.” Understanding at last that his future will take time to build and create, the Fool thanks the Empress and continues on his way. Pregnant. Well, not in the Rider-Waite deck she isn’t. But she is in early decks, and it is an apt symbol for this card. The Empress is a creator, be it creation of life, of romance, of art or business. While the Magician is the primal spark, the idea made real, and the High Priestess is the one who gives the idea a form, the Empress is the womb where it gestates and grows till it is ready to be born. This is why her symbol is Venus, goddess of beautiful things as well as love. Even so, the Empress is more Demeter, goddess of abundance, then sensual Venus. She is the giver of Earthly gifts, yet at the same time, she can, in anger withhold, as Demeter did when her daughter, Persephone, was kidnapped. In fury and grief, she kept the Earth barren till her child was returned to her. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / To read more go to this site*
You will see this on another art site, under the ID of Eclectia. That is because Eclectia is me. So is DSWilde! Anything bad you read about either is only borne out of jealousy. * grin * Here is what the description says: I was inspired by a wonderful photograph of some stairs in France (you can find it in my favorites) to finish this piece. Took me several hours to complete – not quite sure how many severals but more than usual, I can tell you! I have many variations that now I must decide to toss or keep. This is how I end up with a room cluttered by disks! Thank you for the inspiration, handsome man whose name I forget! This illustration is for a story I started long ago, which has altered much over time, and so far is just something I amuse myself with. It is being considered to finally set it down all in words and to send it out into the world. I’m a little hesitant as once it is penned (so to speak) it will be permanently as written and. . well .. I guess all children must grow up and be what they will, even the ones we create in our minds and with our hands. Yes? and here is what the handsome man, whose name I forget had to say: *euristis:iconeuristis: Jan 9, 2007, 6:17:11 AM / wow! Thank you so much, your postwork is amazing! Ancient Silk / from the Asia Series by Karin Taylor / from an original pencil, ink and charcoal illustration and digitally coloured / I’ve taken ‘The Silk Princess’ and ancientified her with a textile look / My aim – simply to create the appearance of an old scroll-type textile document that may have been found buried in an ancient chinese tomb…..subsequently unearthed by archeologists, a lil something ancient from a ‘dig’... / something special to hang on the wall….
I took a break from my planet series to work on this piece. I got inspired one night to paint a beautiful empress who looks as evil as she does kind. I have my own story in mind for this image but I want the viewer to interpret there own story. I want the viewer to also question what her emotions could be. I painted this image in Photoshop. No references were used. I spent a lot of time on this image working on her skin especially. Painting the solders in the background was a bit tedious as well but fun at the same time.
The Valley of the Waters is @ Wentworth Falls In the Blue Mountains. The Valley of the Waters may be reached by a direct walking track, which descends steeply through temperate rainforest. Cool, moist, shady conditions prevail, and the area is a rich wildlife habitat. / Apart from the regular bushwalkers, you are likely to meet wetsuit-clad abseilers who like to take a more direct, and wet, route down the numerous waterfalls. / From the valley, National Pass takes the walker to the Wentworth Falls, then back up the cliffs to the village. / The Nature Track, & other cliff-top routes, make a good alternative for walkers who prefer to avoid the strenuous climb in and out of the valley. 9×12 pastel on Sennelier la carte paper I am pretty excited about the new Tarot: Map of Consciousness group! This is my attempt at an Empress, my personal favorite card. The Empress is the embodiement of the divine feminine. She is the Earth personified, or as the Celtic traditions would say, the sovereign goddess. / As many Avalonian and Authurian themed tarot decks have done, I have chosen to represent the Empress with Guinevere. Although much of the later written stories of Guinevere have her depicted as a frail, pale, infertile, adultress wimp; originally she would have been recognised as the sovereign goddess. She is the land personified, and the hero she choses to give her favors to would reign as king. Lancelot and Aurthur also represent the Oak and the Holly kings, fighting for the favor of the goddess to have this honor, and to reign over their respective seasons. / The Empress represents change and balance. In the Qabbala the path of the Empress is the path between wisdom and understanding. It is the Divine Feminine that brings this balance to humanity. / There are twelve stars above Guinevere’s head like on many Empress cards. This represents her connection to the heavens and spirit. She is the bridge between the earth, or the material, and heaven. The May blossoms connect her to the Beltaine goddess and is a symbol of fertility. / Guinevere’s name does mean “pale one”, but this is a reference to the ancient “shining ones”, and means that Guinevere was a faerie queen. TAROT SERIES Original Available A4- £70 + P&P Finally I’ve made a start on my Tarot Project / I would like to do the full deck but will be starting with / the Major Arcana (this will probably take me some years / to complete, but you have got to start somewhere) I am deciding whether to do an all female tarot, whether this would work for divination purposes. As we all have male and female energies, I’m hoping to tap into this concept. / On completion, I will decide whether to add colour to the deck, again an important feature in representing energies and elements. I also need to think of a name for the Deck. / (Any feedback on these 3 ideas is most welcomed) Each piece will be an artwork in its own right (with its art and tarot title). When the deck is complete, I will add borderings to make them into the cards. My Inspirations will be Beauty, Nature, Modern Subculture meets Ancient Culture, My Dreams and Visions, The Devine Feminine / Hope you enjoy xx The Empress represents Motherhood and fertility, represented by the roses on her skirt and the soft invite of her petticoats. The crescent moon of her belt buckle represents, the waxing and waning of the moon and its links to fertility (the cycle of life). The cats are the children in this piece, in need of love, care and attention, but ultimately their own spirits and independant beings. The Empress has physical and spirtitual security, you can tell by her confident gaze she is mature and knowing. Loving and generous, she wears her heart on her sleeve and has one foot firmly in earthy matters and her spirit flying with Angels I want to thank my good friend Paul for picking up on the Crescent Moon Belt Buckle, something I was unaware of, that emerged from the subconscious and makes so much sense in the piece. / Paul’s Gallery-Gottheshot / Thank YOU xx Pen and Ink on Cartridge Paper FEATURED IN ALL THINGS BLACK & THE DEVINE FEMININE JULY 2009 (with thanks x) / FEATURED IN REAL MEN WEAR TIGHTS AUGUST 2009 / FEATURED IN PAINTED LADIES AUGUST 2009
Just playing around in PSP with a photo of my daughter Kassidy in a pensive mood, I couldn’t help but think how she looked old beyond her years, and she made me think of the Child Empress in The Neverending Story I and how she had the weight of the world on her shoulders. A little tweaking and playing with several different photos and this is the result! :) All resources used my own, taken on my Canon Powershot A480 point and shoot. The Peacock Empress is a drawing created a couple of days ago, while at the surgery with my daughter, i had a vision of it which impressed strongly in my mind, and i was able to draw it once I got home. The idea was the Empress was rising up over the waters. There’s lots of symbolism in this, but it’s purely for my own benefit and the viewer may decide how the symbolism relates to them…the colour has been done in Photoshop. She has almost taken on the look of an oriental style “Luna Park” entrance at twilight, might be a nice design for those who celebrate “Chinese New Year” and/or collectors of asian inspired/related art
