Visible on the horizon is the sacred island of Kanaloa (Kaho’olawe Island) and Molokini. The phone rang; it was Jacob Mau on Maui. Jacob was known as the best search and rescue man on Maui. He had hunted the mountains and back country of Maui since he was a boy and knew the land like his own back yard. He was a major factor in helping the Maui team find several heiau(s). Jacob told Daniel he was helping Pastor Alan Cravallo get permits to go into several remote valleys in Hamakua on the Big Island. So Daniel told him of their unsolvable problem on Moloka’i. Jacob said he would see what he could do and call him back. Daniel didn’t have high hopes. He had already checked out every possible option. But an hour later, Jacob called back. “I got you a helicopter that will land you at the very top of the mountain – FREE!!”. Daniel was stunned! It turned out Jacob had a pilot friend, Mike (last name withheld by request), who owed him a favour. He and Jacob had worked together many times doing search-and-rescue- missions. Getting permits was not a problem for these search-and-rescue pilots. Jacob said Mike was the best pilot in the islands and that he had landed in the Moloka’i high country many times. The entire island of Maui is an enormous mountain rising up from depths of the ocean floor and surrounded by the vast and beautiful Pacific Ocean. The West Maui mountains are older than the East Maui mountains, and specifically the majestic summit of Haleakala, is one of the highest mountains on earth, a massive shield volcano that forms more than 75% of the Hawaiian Island of Maui, which is 10,023 feet in elevation from sea level. Information Source: Wikipedia. The more eroded, highest peak of the West Maui mountains is Pu’u Kukui at 5,788 feet. The sacred O ‘Iao Valley is the most famous valley of this mountain range. The West Maui Mountains or West Maui Volcano, known to Hawaiians as Mauna Kahalawai and Hale Mahina, form a much eroded shield volcano that constitutes the western one-quarter of the Hawaiian Island of Maui. Mauna Kahalawai is the mountain visible in many of my beach images from the south coast of the island and my sunset images from Ho’okipa on the North Shore. This archipelago represents the exposed peaks of a great undersea mountain range known as the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain, formed by volcanic activity over a hotspot in the earth’s mantle. At about 1,860 miles (3,000 km) from the nearest continent, the Hawaiian Island archipelago is the most isolated grouping of islands on Earth. The Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain is composed of the Hawaiian Ridge, consisting of the islands of the Hawaiian chain northwest to Kure Atoll, and the Emperor Seamounts, a vast underwater mountain region of islands and intervening seamounts, atolls, shallows, banks and reefs along a line trending southeast to northwest beneath the northern Pacific Ocean. The seamount chain, containing over 80 identified undersea volcanoes, stretches over 5,800 kilometres (3,600 mi) from the Aleutian Trench in the far northwest Pacific to the Loʻihi seamount, the youngest volcano in the chain, which lies about 35 kilometres (22 mi) southeast of the Island of Hawaiʻi. The Hawaiian Islands are that portion of the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain that projects above sea level.

LOCATION CAPTURED: GROENLAND GAMELODGE, TOLWE, LIMPOPO PROVINCE, SOUTH AFRICA. / BLUE EMPEROR – Anax imperator / Identification: Very large (wingspan 105mm), with sky blue abdomen and green thorax. / Females closely resemble males. Nymphs very large (body length 55mm), with flatened head, eyes nearly meeting in the midline, labial mask reaching the base of the last pair of legs when folded and lateral spines on 3 abdominal segments. Early- stage nymphs have very broad contrasting bands of cream and black. / Biology: Prefers standing water, where females settle on water lilies and curl the ovipositer underneath to pierce plant tissue and insert eggs. Frequently preys on other large dragonflies such as Pantala flavescens. Nymphs also attack large prey, including fish and tadpoles. Migratory adults occur from October-June. / Habitat: Common near pools, streams and rivers, including brackish waters and organically enriched stagnant bodies of water. Widespread, extending to Europe and Western Asia. / Related species: There are three species in the genus. Anax tristis (wingspan 130mm) is the largest African dragonfly. The massive nymphs of Anax speratus are similar to those of Anax imperator but are more boldly marked, and differ in the pattern of spines (the anal pyramid) at the tip of the abdomen.

The interior of the magnificent Hagia Sophia, or “Holy Wisdom,” in Istanbul. Originally built as a cathedral in the days of the Byzantine Empire, it was later converted to a mosque with the arrival of the Ottoman Empire, finally to become a museum after the foundation of the modern nation of Turkey. Inside, remnants of all three eras are visible: Byzantine mosaics of Christian saints, huge medallions with Arabic calligraphy naming prophets of Islam, and an open floor crowded with European tourists of every creed or none at all. This view shows the main floor as seen from a railing in the upper gallery. At the opposite side of the building, the lower and upper galleries can be seen, below a wall of windows where Byzantine mosaics are still being uncovered and restored.

This Emperor Tamarin was taken at ZSL London Zoo. It was looking at me as I started taking pics. I don’t know if it saw its own reflexion as it suddenly looked intently at the camera.

Chinese emperors didn’t think they were the humble servants of any cause larger than themselves – no such mental capability. In fact many of them emerged among lowlife. When they gained power by force they robbed everyone. They were the perfect representatives of extreme selfish lust and shamelessness. These imperial gardens were built when many people were starving. Each one was built for many years.

In the Snow Hill Island emperor penguin colony. The fluffy chicks would get very excited at times and flap their wings. It was such a huge privilege to have been there and witnessed these beautiful birds.

For a few Euros tourists can pay to have their photo taken with this Roman Emperor and soldier outside the Coliseum in Rome. But when I saw them having a cigarette break I knew that was the shot I wanted. Unfortunately, on that first occasion, I didn’t have my camera with me. When I returned to Rome, 18 months later, this shot was at the top of my wish list. But it was summer and they were busy, so I knew that I’d have to be patient. After about an hour they had a bit of a lull and lit up and, armed with a long lens and pretending to be totally disinterested in them, I got the shot!
