LOCATION CAPTURED: GROENLAND GAMELODGE, TOLWE, LIMPOPO PROVINCE, SOUTH AFRICA. / BLUE EMPEROR – Anax imperator / Identification: Very large (wingspan 105mm), with sky blue abdomen and green thorax. / Females closely resemble males. Nymphs very large (body length 55mm), with flatened head, eyes nearly meeting in the midline, labial mask reaching the base of the last pair of legs when folded and lateral spines on 3 abdominal segments. Early- stage nymphs have very broad contrasting bands of cream and black. / Biology: Prefers standing water, where females settle on water lilies and curl the ovipositer underneath to pierce plant tissue and insert eggs. Frequently preys on other large dragonflies such as Pantala flavescens. Nymphs also attack large prey, including fish and tadpoles. Migratory adults occur from October-June. / Habitat: Common near pools, streams and rivers, including brackish waters and organically enriched stagnant bodies of water. Widespread, extending to Europe and Western Asia. / Related species: There are three species in the genus. Anax tristis (wingspan 130mm) is the largest African dragonfly. The massive nymphs of Anax speratus are similar to those of Anax imperator but are more boldly marked, and differ in the pattern of spines (the anal pyramid) at the tip of the abdomen.

Emperor Tamarin The fur of the Emperor Tamarin is predominantly grey colored, with yellowish speckles on its chest. The hands and feet are black and the tail is brown. Outstanding is its long, white mustache, which extends to both sides beyond the shoulders. This primate inhabits tropical rain forests, living deep in the forest and also in open tree-covered areas. This diurnal species walks or runs quadrupedally through the forest, spending the majority of its days in the trees with quick, safe movements and broad jumps among the limbs. The diet of the Emperor Tamarin is similar to that of other tamarins. It is an omnivore, primarily eating fruits, insects and sap. When feeding on sap, the Emperor Tamarin latches on to the tree vertically with its claws dug into the bark of the tree. It also eats bird eggs and small vertebrates (such as tree frogs). Due to its small weight it can reach food at the far end of branches, which are not accessible to heavier animals.

This is the hand of the Emperor Constantine ,the only Roman to be named Emperor while in Britain and a founder of that empires conversion to a one religious state, Christianity. The Peacock Empress is a drawing created a couple of days ago, while at the surgery with my daughter, i had a vision of it which impressed strongly in my mind, and i was able to draw it once I got home. The idea was the Empress was rising up over the waters. There’s lots of symbolism in this, but it’s purely for my own benefit and the viewer may decide how the symbolism relates to them…the colour has been done in Photoshop. She has almost taken on the look of an oriental style “Luna Park” entrance at twilight, might be a nice design for those who celebrate “Chinese New Year” and/or collectors of asian inspired/related art
