Late in the afternoon the walls of Emma Gorge were a glowing orange reflecting in the creek.
Comissioned portrait, 70cm X 50cm Pastel on Paper
How fun! These are old cast iron farm equipment seats shown at a local tractor festival this past weekend. The man who owned them has over 600 of them, most dated pre-1900s. this is my daughter’s shot – I love the different colors. Yes, folks… we do have TRACTOR festivals in Texas! We also throw buffalo chips, but I won’t get into that… Oct 08 Update: Thanks to everyone who voted for this photo to be Country Magazine’s Rural Photo of the Year. It made the top 4!!! E.

I used to love to watch “The Avengers” on TV. It had that 60’s campy cool thing going on. I like silhouette art a lot. I think John Stead and Emma Peal have to be one of the most easily recognized silhouettes around. For we old folks I mean. Haa!

my neices at a recent shoot. My first time in shooting in a studio.
A self portrait. Basking in the joys of autumn.
Another self portrait.
This is my 14 year old neice Emma who recently started modeling.
In June 2007 our family adopted Emma a beautiful female boxer from the local humane society. We had Nikki who was 7 and her mother Adrienne who was 10 years old at the time. Adrienne was slowing down and we wanted a best friend for Nikki. Emma and Nikki became the best of friends playing together until May of 2008. Suddenly they began fighting occasionally and my husband and I put everything aside to focus on trying to save their relationship. We committed ourselves to walking them daily and put our best efforts into changing our home to a balanced “calm submissive” one. However in August their fights became so frequent that they couldn’t be in the same room together anymore. It was clear we had two options. 1)Take Emma back to the humane society to an unknown fate. 2) Consult a local behaviorist. We took the two dogs to a behaviorist and for 10 weeks Emma went to live with her. Every night after work my husband and I would stop by and work with Emma on her lessons, and then go home and work with Nikki. We did little else during all these months. Our lives were on hold. We finally brought Emma home for about two weeks when we felt it was time and it was no use. They started fighting again. We realized we had lost the battle. While Emma was living with her, the behaviorist absolutely fell in love with her. In tears one night we gave Emma to her to live permanently as her new dog. It was a perfect new home. Emma loves her and loves the other dogs she lives with. For us, we struggled with how to quit trying. How to accept the loss of her as a member of our family. Its been hard to move on. So shedding many tears I drew this portrait of her so we will always have her with us in some sense. I will always love Emma. I know that time will heal this wound. I’ll be Okay. I’ve set the WIP to an appropriate song and added some family photos of her on Youtube 8”x10” graphite on Bristol Vellum / Mechanical clutch pencil 2B

This piece is all about holding ourselves back. Often we confine ourselves in mental cages, not letting our true thoughts out or expressing what we want. The right side is plain, symbolising this confinement and lack of being unique, and gradually as she becomes more sure of herself her life is being filled with colour and originality. So basically don’t hold yourself back, be who you want to be. This is a real mixed media… acrylics, watercolours, watercolour pencils (without water), pastels, inks and pens! I really enjoyed doing this piece, despite the fact it was dragged out so long.
If you have not had the opportunity to spend any time several leagues under the ocean lately, you may not have realized just how stylish undersea travel has become. Witness Emma in her clever Nautilus shell craft, gently conveyed along the currents of the briny deep by her pet miniature whale, Fathom. With a her parasol to protect her from falling krill and a sonar horn in the event of traffic jam, Emma loves cruising the colorful coral reefs and continental shelves on Sunday afternoon. With plenty of room below for hitchhikers and stowaways and a turbo propeller for passing power, the Nautilus is the seacraft of choice for the hip underwater set, to be sure! Great as a companion piece to Marcella and her Conch Carriage. This original artwork and story are copyright Ramona Szczerba 2009.
