A series of very old photographs taken by my great-grandfather and grandfather who founded Souvenir Photo Studio in the early 1900’s, in Radville, Saskatchewan. Emile Jalbert married Therese Bourassa shortly after this photo was taken. Emile served overseas and was rescued at Dunkirk. He never spoke much about his horrific war experiences. I assume the photo is around 1945.

My sister was feeding and taking care of Emil – Cat Emil, as we called him – while his family was on vacation a couple of years ago. And she told me to come along and meet him, because he was such a wonderful cat. So I did. And I brought my camera. What a clever decision that turned out to be! I sent this photo to “Kattens Værn”, a Danish cat rights organization, and they used it for the front cover of their magazine.
This was a doodle, which became an Illustrator experiment, which became a tee-shirt. Suh-weet! This is also a cheeky jab at all the hipster boys out there. Your hair’s purty! And for the record, I don’t actually know anyone named Emil.
This is a reproduction of Emile Friant’s “La Lutte, or The Wrestle” of 1889. Emile Friant was fond of depicting everyday French peasants in their routine pastimes. He died in 1932 at the age of sixty-nine years. This particular painting captures a scene of youths wrestling by a stream in the French countryside. The painting is in the Musee Fabre in Montpellier, France.
The story, as I remember, goes something like this: In the early 1960’s, Emile Griffith (right) fought an opponent live on U.S. television. It was the first live telecast of a boxing event and would end up being the last for about a decade. You see, the referee in the bout in question had a mild stroke and lost control of the fight. Emile Griffith’s opponent ended up dying as a result of the bout. Live telecasts were hence banned. Some years later, I think it was 1973, Tony Mundine (left) and Emile Griffith, who was the then world champion, fought it out in Paris. Mundine won the bout. I took this photograph at the 2007 Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame dinner held at the MCG in Melbourne on Saturday 13 October 2007. This is the first time since that Paris bout that Emile Griffith and Tony Mundine have been in the same room.
