I believe that we (i.e. you) at RedBubble are inching our way forward in the exploration of new more accessible art. We don’t know where this will take us. We are leaving the well-trodden paths of big galleries, elite artists and scorned minions behind. We are finding creativity in lost corners of our world and of our own lives. We, and the world are becoming richer as a result. I know that this is a journey that social commentators are just beginning to talk about. And it is a journey with ill-defined signposts and subtle distinctions. At the risk of ignoring the subtleties I postulate some differences between the dying art and the art still being born. I would say that I see the emerging art as overlapping with the older art forms and that it ultimately will richly complement rather than supplant them. I welcome comment, additions, criticisms! Martin (aka Pilgrim) p.s. if you are wondering about the plasticine line look at the previous RB post.

Emergency landings !!! ô¿ô

My apologies for not commenting on your wonderful works over the past few days … I was off having an adventure and ‘oh my’ what an adventure it was! After a long drive to Broken Hill I spent 2 days having a real good look around there & the infamous Silverton, for those of you familiar with Australia’s outback. Yesterday I took off in what I would describe as a ‘balser wood’ plane to return to the Central West. An hour or so into the flight the Pilot said we were going to have to make an emergency landing still in the outback … ô¿ô I don’t like flying, it prevents me from ‘popping’ back to the UK to catch up with friends so any words like ‘emergency landing’ make me hyperventilate at the least! There was apparantley a red warning light and if ignored it (the part) can get too hot & catch fire. After a turbulent landing as it was in the 40’s on a too short runway we accumilated by a shed under some tree’s. The sign on the shed read “” We sat beneath the tree’s for six hours (snake watching) with very little water while waiting for a coach to come & rescue us which had to come from another outback town! Then we had a three hour coach ride to a large town where those that wanted to fly on could … I stayed in a motel & drove home today!! The flight from hell was on the 13th of November!!!! Nice, very nice, to be home and catch up with everyone and their work :D Tai xx

Let's Do a Beautiful RedBubble Book! - Are You Interested?

To all my friends and fellow artists, / I’m finding out more and more every day what a great community of creative and friendly people are involved with RedBubble. Do you think it would be possible to set things up in RedBubble to allow people from certain categories to collaborate on a book that could then be printed? (I.E.: Members load their best photos into a book section of the Web site to be self-published on-demand, and sold on the Web site for RedBubble’s and the included artists’ benefit?) I believe that other sites like www.CafePress.com and www.Lulu.com already have this capability. I would be interested in participating in something like this, even if there was an up-front fee to help RedBubble make it happen. / Perhaps there might be a way to work with a on-demand publisher/printer such as www.Trafford.com. I’m excited about this possibility, and there are so many great artists on RedBubble that I can’t help but think that they also would be excited about this prospect, and that we could do a very appealing book that could potentially help all the professional and emerging artists on RedBubble publish and sell their work. Please consult with others on this and let me know what you think… Thanks, / Curtis / ——- Hi Nodakami, / Thanks for the tips, comments and suggestions! I’m a newbie, so I hope you will bear with me. I’ll try to address some of the points you’ve touched on… Some people said that a RB book would be too big if it had no categorical way to narrow it down, so I just threw that in, but I suppose it could be for everyone with internal categories (like fantasy, realism, fractal, B&W, etc.), (if it was not so big as to become cost-prohibitive). I would think it would be “all the above” that you mentioned; I.E.: for the artists, for RB, and for sale, IF it was really nice and the marketplace would like it and wish to purchase it. Your “Best of” idea sounds good to me. I think RB is interested in the online print-on-demand book idea, and any printed works would surely boost their membership. I think they are interested in something that would work similar to the calender creation, but whatever form it takes, I’ve learned that it may take awhile to become a reality on RB. There are many works of art on RedBubble that are so uniquely beautiful, that it just seems like a natural thing to want to see them on large glossy pages in a book. If the RB artists express an interest, I will try to put their ideas out there on the suggestions forum, and also post to my journal and to other forums. You expressed another good idea in that short artist “bios” and/or lifestyle essays could be included with their work. This type of book would be great exposure for RedBubble and also for those of us who are “Emerging Artists”. I’m really excited about this possibility. In a relatively short time I’ve already grown to like the artists on RB, and to appreciate their awesome work. The best thing that could happen is that people like yourself might become interested in this possibility and together we could encourage RB to help us make it happen. Thanks again for your ideas and input, / Curtis / —- webgrrl wrote you a BubbleMail 4 days ago: i think its possible.. its just a matter of planning it out ..and someone to instigate it…. like the build it and they will come? yes cafepress has book printing capabilities..but if im not mistaken.. LULU (lulu.com) is the leader in self book publishing.. ive made a calendar there with them.. http://www.lulu.com/content/905970 and i have to say that i really like the option of having black bkground (so far the only place able to do that..and custom holidays as well..) id be interested in projects / help / things like that.. if you see my profile and see all the sites/projects that im doing all myself.. cuz i got tired of waiting for others to do it with me..so i just started them myself… and hope everyday…… others will want to join.. :/

Keep Your Beloved Pets Safe From POISON!!!

Now that Spring is upon us and many are trying to grow a green thumb, I thought I’d share some of this basic info with you in hopes of preventing any pet-related tragedies. (Note: I’m pulling this info from the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center) 17 Common Poisonous Plants Lilies / Members of the Lilium spp. are considered to be highly toxic to cats. While the poisonous component has not yet been identified, it is clear that with even ingestions of very small amounts of the plant, severe kidney damage could result. Marijuana / Ingestion of Cannabis sativa by companion animals can result in depression of the central nervous system and incoordination, as well as vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, increased heart rate, and even seizures and coma. Sago Palm / All parts of Cycas Revoluta are poisonous, but the seeds or “nuts” contain the largest amount of toxin. The ingestion of just one or two seeds can result in very serious effects, which include vomiting, diarrhea, depression, seizures and liver failure. Tulip/Narcissus bulbs / The bulb portions of Tulipa/Narcissus spp. contain toxins that can cause intense gastrointestinal irritation, drooling, loss of appetite, depression of the central nervous system, convulsions and cardiac abnormalities. Azalea/Rhododendron / Members of the Rhododenron spp. contain substances known as grayantoxins, which can produce vomiting, drooling, diarrhea, weakness and depression of the central nervous system in animals. Severe azalea poisoning could ultimately lead to coma and death from cardiovascular collapse. Oleander / All parts of Nerium oleander are considered to be toxic, as they contain cardiac glycosides that have the potential to cause serious effects—including gastrointestinal tract irritation, abnormal heart function, hypothermia and even death. Castor Bean / The poisonous principle in Ricinus communis is ricin, a highly toxic protein that can produce severe abdominal pain, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, weakness and loss of appetite. Severe cases of poisoning can result in dehydration, muscle twitching, tremors, seizures, coma and death. Cyclamen / Cylamen species contain cyclamine, but the highest concentration of this toxic component is typically located in the root portion of the plant. If consumed, Cylamen can produce significant gastrointestinal irritation, including intense vomiting. Fatalities have also been reported in some cases. Kalanchoe / This plant contains components that can produce gastrointestinal irritation, as well as those that are toxic to the heart, and can seriously affect cardiac rhythm and rate. Yew / Taxus spp. contains a toxic component known as taxine, which causes central nervous system effects such as trembling, incoordination, and difficulty breathing. It can also cause significant gastrointestinal irritation and cardiac failure, which can result in death. Amaryllis / Common garden plants popular around Easter, Amaryllis species contain toxins that can cause vomiting, depression, diarrhea, abdominal pain, hypersalivation, anorexia and tremors. Autumn Crocus / Ingestion of Colchicum autumnale by pets can result in oral irritation, bloody vomiting, diarrhea, shock, multi-organ damage and bone marrow suppression. Chrysanthemum / These popular blooms are part of the Compositae family, which contain pyrethrins that may produce gastrointestinal upset, including drooling, vomiting and diarrhea, if eaten. In certain cases depression and loss of coordination may also develop if enough of any part of the plant is consumed. English Ivy / Also called branching ivy, glacier ivy, needlepoint ivy, sweetheart ivy and California ivy, Hedera helix contains triterpenoid saponins that, should pets ingest, can result in vomiting, abdominal pain, hypersalivation and diarrhea. Peace Lily (AKA Mauna Loa Peace Lily) / Spathiphyllum contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause oral irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, difficulty in swallowing and intense burning and irritation of the mouth, lips and tongue in pets who ingest. Pothos / Pothos (both Scindapsus and Epipremnum) belongs to the Araceae family. If chewed or ingested, this popular household plant can cause significant mechanical irritation and swelling of the oral tissues and other parts of the gastrointestinal tract. Schefflera / Schefflera and Brassaia actinophylla contain calcium oxalate crystals that can cause oral irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, difficulty in swallowing and intense burning and irritation of the mouth, lips and tongue in pets who ingest. A more comprehensive list of plants poisonous to pets _What flora should be forbidden in your home, pet parents? Dr. Steven Hansen, veterinary toxicologist & ASPCA Senior Vice President, shows you examples of the most common potentially dangerous plants A LIST OF HOUSEHOLD PLANTS THAT ARE PET-FRIENDLY Want to send flowers to someone? *Be sure they are safe for pets! Here are some suggestions from 1-800-FLOWERS.com that include options like dendrobium orchids, violets and gerbera daisies, and more. (Use promotion code ASPCA when ordering and 1-800-FLOWERS.com will donate 10 percent of the net proceeds from your purchase to the ASPCA!) Please note that while the flowers shown are considered to be nontoxic, it’s important to keep in mind that even “safe” plants can produce minor stomach upset if ingested. Here’s a list of the most common food hazards you should be aware of! Experts at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center urge you to avoid feeding the following foods to your pet: • Alcoholic beverages / • Avocado / • Chocolate (all forms) / • Coffee (all forms) / • Fatty foods / • Macadamia nuts / • Moldy or spoiled foods / • Onions, onion powder / • Raisins and grapes / • Salt / • Yeast dough / • Garlic / • Products sweetened with xylitol Additional foods that may be potentially hazardous. Ibuprofen and Aspirin Ibuprofen can definitely be toxic to dogs and other pets—even in small amounts. Depending on the dose ingested, significant gastrointestinal damage or even kidney damage could result. Drugs, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatories like aspirin, can cause serious or potentially life-threatening problems, depending on the dose involved. In fact, many drugs that are beneficial to humans can be harmful or even deadly for pets. Never give your pet any medication without first speaking with his or her regular veterinarian. If you feel that your pet needs pain relief for any reason, get in touch with your veterinarian—if you have not already. Your vet can direct you regarding the best dose to use or, if necessary, can prescribe a different pain reliever. And while most human medications are contained in child-proof bottles, these containers are not pet-proof. Pets can easily chew and break open packaging, so medications should always be stored in a secure cabinet above the countertop. A Poison Safe Home WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PET IS POISONED • Don’t panic. Rapid response is important, but panicking can interfere with the process of helping your pet. • Take 30 to 60 seconds to safely collect and have at hand any material involved. This may be of great benefit to your vet and/or APCC toxicologists, as they determine what poison or poisons are involved. In the event that you need to take your pet to a local veterinarian, be sure to take the product’s container with you. Also, collect in a sealable plastic bag any material your pet may have vomited or chewed. • If you witness your pet consuming material that you suspect might be toxic, do not hesitate to seek emergency assistance, even if you do not notice any adverse effects. Sometimes, even if poisoned, an animal may appear normal for several hours or for days after the incident. Call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center or your vet immediately. The telephone number is (888) 426-4435. There is a $60 consultation fee for this service. Be ready with the following information: / - the species, breed, age, sex, weight and number of animals involved / - the animal’s symptoms / - information regarding the exposure, including the agent (if known), the amount of the agent involved and the time elapsed since the time of exposure. Have the product container/packaging available for reference. Please note: If your animal is having seizures, losing consciousness, is unconscious or is having difficulty breathing, telephone ahead and bring your pet immediately to your local veterinarian or emergency veterinary clinic. If necessary, he or she may call the APCC. Be Prepared / Keep the telephone number of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center—(888) 426-4435—as well as that of your local veterinarian, in a prominent location. Invest in an emergency first-aid kit for your pet. The kit should contain: / - a fresh bottle of hydrogen peroxide, 3 percent USP (to induce vomiting) / - a turkey baster, bulb syringe or large medicine syringe (to administer peroxide) / - saline eye solution / - artificial tear gel (to lubricate eyes after flushing) / - mild grease-cutting dishwashing liquid (for bathing an animal after skin contamination) / - forceps (to remove stingers) / - a muzzle (to protect against fear- or excitement-induced biting) / - a can of your pet’s favorite wet food / -a pet carrier Always consult a veterinarian or the APCC for directions on how and when to use any emergency first-aid item. GET A FREE PET SAFETY PACK! / In the event of an emergency, the pet rescue window decal alerts rescue personnel that pets are inside your home. The pack also includes an ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center magnet—a great way to keep the APCC’s toll-free emergency number handy at all times! Order one now. Well, I attended the Emerging Writer’s Festival on the weekend and came away feeling better than if I had spent a week with a thai masseuse. How wonderful to get to spend the day listening to writers talk about…writing! My favourite part was the first lecture I attended, I think it was called ‘Truth, Lies, Fiction’ and was about the nature of fiction in genres like autobiography and memior. A panel of 5 or so writers discussed the issue; talking about how close to the ‘truth’ a writer has to remain, and how much they can fictionalise events to make the story more interesting, to protect people (ie family members) or simply because they don’t have the information available to them. Alice Pung (Unpolished Gem) and Arnold Zabel (Jewelles and Ashes) stood out as exceptional speakers, in that they were both engaging, down to earth and facintating to listen to. My least favourite panel was on the Avant Garde. The speakers all presented very academically which was a bit alienating (and boring) for the audience, a shame since the subject matter was very interesting. All in all though, I wished that I could have attended something like the Festival every day of my life. Thanks so much to Redbubble for making it possible for me to go along…it was great! I’d love to know what other people saw/liked/disliked as well.

Please Help! 30,000 birds dead, thousands more covered in oil / This week a massive storm swept into the Black Sea sinking dozens of ships and breaking apart a Russian oil tanker. Over a half million gallons of thick fuel oil was spilled and initial reports suggest some 30,000 birds may have been killed. Thousands more are covered in oil and face death in the coming weeks. Help rescue wildlife in crisis – Make a donation to support IFAW’s animal rescue mission Over 50 kilometers of Russian coastline are impacted by this oil spill, including critical habitat for migrating and wintering birds. At the Russian government’s request we’ve deployed our emergency response team to help as many as possible of the tens of thousands of animals suffering in the wake of this disaster. Because oil spills like this cause widespread devastation to coastal ecosystems and marine life IFAW created the Emergency Relief Team. Since 1989 when IFAW responded to the massive Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska we have become a world-class team of experts in rehabilitating animals injured in oil spills. When there is a disaster, your support helps us provide the best care possible for oiled wildlife globally. Every day animals are thrown into life-threatening situations. IFAW is dramatically improving their chances of survival by making expertise widely available and coordinating vital on-the-ground efforts to save lives and end suffering. Bring New Hope to Animals in Crisis – Help support IFAW’s animal rescue mission

Newcastle Emerging Artist Prize

I entered two works recently into the Newcastle Emerging Artist Prize. One in the photomedia section and the other in the Works on Paper section. I had serious doubts anything would come of it especially since last year I was rejected (despite the work being the most popular work I had ever made and I had tons of people wanting to buy it despite it already being sold). So I figured these two lesser works didn’t stand much of a chance but I have to be in it to win it. So I entered them anyway. Well today, while I was constructing a piece out of wood for an exhibit later in the year/early next year my phone went off. I checked it and got a message from the competition organisers letting me know that I was one of the photomedia finalists which meant my work will be exhibited for 3 weeks in a gallery. I was ecstatic lol. Then while I was bouncing off the walls my phone beeped away again. Checked. My works on paper also made me a finalist. At which point it felt like my head exploded hahaha. I doubt I’ll win any prizes but it would be nice, and I’m already so very happy that I made it to the finalists. For the photomedia winner it’s $800, works on paper winner gets a $3000 voucher for framing (which will be really handy for future exhibits), a people’s choice award which is an $800 framing voucher. And finally the droolfest overall prize which is $5000 to do what ever you want with (there’s also a sculpture and painter award, $800 each, but i didn’t enter them) So yeah My works will be on exhibit at the Newcastle Art Space for three weeks from this Saturday for those that are nearby and are interested in art. Unless I get told it was all a cruel joke/mistake, then I want you all to shun the NAS Info: / NEWCASTLE EMERGING ARTIST PRIZE MAY 10TH – JUNE 1ST THURSDAY – SUNDAY, 12NOON – 5PM OFFICIAL OPENING – AWARDS PRESENTATION 6PM SATURDAY 10TH MAY Newcastle Art Space / 246 Parry St, Newcastle West. PSPCA Rescues Hundreds of Cats and Other Animals From Animal 'Sanctuary'

I’ve been in bed with a migraine all day and just got up a little while ago to check all my email. This message from the Pennsylvania SPCA is one of the last messages I read and my heart is sick with grief ~ especially because this happened so close to home. Here’s the text from the email: Dear Friend, I spent all night moving sick and dying cats into cages for transport to the animal hospital. I am exhausted. Everyone around me is exhausted, but there is still more work to do. More cats to help. On Thursday night, the Pennsylvania SPCA raided a place called Tiger Ranch. There were more than 600 cats living on the 30-acre property. Tiger Ranch advertised itself as a “no-kill sanctuary” so people dropped their unwanted pets and stray cats off thinking that they were saving them. Instead, the cats were neglected, underfed and left to die. The cats were living in filthy, cramped conditions, without enough food or water, and many were suffering from untreated illnesses. When they died, the owner of the property buried their bodies in large burial pits and covered them with dirt. It is a horrific, nightmarish scene. Cat fur lines the ground around the burial pits. And even worse, there are dozens of dead cats in freezers, waiting to be buried. On Thursday night, the owner of Tiger Ranch was arrested. We have now seized all of the cats and are providing prompt medical care. With the help of partners like the ASPCA and local rescue organizations, we have rescued most of the cats. Some were so ill that they had to be humanely euthanized. Some died before we arrived or on the way to the animal hospital. But we’ve saved many hundreds of them. The Pennsylvania SPCA has set up a shelter and animal hospital just for these cats in Clarion County, PA. We will be fully providing all medical care and boarding until they are well enough to be adopted. We are accepting donations to the Tiger Ranch Fund to help pay for our efforts. You can support the Pennsylvania SPCA and donate directly to save these neglected cats online. Just write “Tiger Ranch” in the dedication field. We also accept donations over the phone (215 426 6304 ext. 217) or via mail. Please contact Rachel McCrystal, Director of Development, at rmccrystal@pspca.org if you have any further questions about donating to help our efforts. I am shocked by the neglect I’ve seen over the past two days. One small black cat dead in a litter box. Dozens of skinny cats pushing each other out of the way to get to one dish of water. Many cats that were so weak from dehydration that they could barely walk. Some literally blind from illness or bleeding from their mouths. Hundreds of sick, sneezing, crying cats. As we work here in Clarion County, providing urgent medical care and trying to ascertain what exactly happened at that horrible place, I know that these cats will never again have to suffer like that. I am promising that to each and every one of them. / / Please help if you can. All my best, Howard Howard R. Nelson, Chief Executive Officer Here’s the news story in it’s entirety. You Can Help / You can support the Pennsylvania SPCA and donate directly to save these neglected cats online. Just write “Tiger Ranch” in the dedication field. We also accept donations over the phone (215 426 6304 ext. 217) or via mail. Please contact Rachel McCrystal, Director of Development, at rmccrystal@pspca.org if you have any further questions about donating to help our efforts.
