  • these girls are based on the paper dancing dolls we used to make as kids. they are painted using acrylic paint and embroidered some have bead work. They are all individual and the work (although not in this picture) comes in a white wood frame.

  • A Mien woman carries her baby on her back, secure in an exquisitely embroidered baby carrier. Mien women are masters of cross-stitch embroidery and spend much of their spare time stitching designs on their pants and on baby carriers and caps. Mien or Yao originated in China but over the past few centuries have migrated to Vietnam, Laos and northern Thailand where this photograph was taken. Nikon FM2, kodachrome slide film.

  • It might be a dirty great mess sometimes, but embroidery is really really nice. I’ve had a few things done in the past, one ridiculously complex faux hockey top and a few hats – nothing is ever really what you want it to be though because of the dreaded thread count. This, of course, is not embroided ;)
