The Embankment, London
-
I painted this in oils in 1970 from a photograph taken very early in the morning. This is the Northern Embankment of the river Thames in London. Blackfriars Bridge in the distance and Captain Scott’s ship the “Discovery”, which was open to visitors during the day. (The Discovery is no longer on this site and has been moved to it’s original shipyard.)

The city where there’s no day or night / The city where it’s raining perpetually / A tree in this city is a rarity, / While waters keep coming and coming. And I’m crying along with the rain / And I’m overflowing like a river / And the stern-looking angels are smiling back at me / While flapping their wings / And breaking up the grey clouds over the city

During the evenings this stretch of the Chelsea Embankment along the Thames is practically bristling with people on long romantic walks, but by day it becomes almost … desolate.

Surely one of the best walks in London must be along the Embankment. Here you can see and experience the atmosphere of this great city. One of the best times to walk – and to use your sketchbook if you are artistically inclined – is early morning when the shadows are at their longest. In this sketch near Waterloo Bridge, I tried to capture the peaceful ambience of the walkway alongside the Thames. Just metres away, the busy rush-hour traffic streams back and forth.

A narrowboat coming into the Norbury junction . The embankment was built by Thomas Telford as a detour to avoid a landowner’s pheasant shoot. It cost a lot of lives.I like the colour and peace of this.
