Yesterday we had our lunch by the lake, then walked along the shore talking to the ducks and just breathing in the beautiful fall day….as we walked back toward the car, I just happened to turn around and there, in the water, was a little herd of elk…...they were crossing the lake, bulls rounding up their ladies, young ones trailing along…..we watched them in the water and on the land for over an hour, fascinated by their beauty and entertained by their interaction…...I hope you enjoy these shots…. Lake Estes, Estes Park, Colorado.

  • CALIFORNIA DREAMIN'
    by Charlene Aycock

    US$6.65–US$152.00

Took this too, about one hour or so, elk down from the mountains to feed in the meadow. Storm clouds clearing, and the sun rays from the mountains just thought it was all so beautiful. I took this shot in Southern California, hence the title. Who would have thought you could see such great wildlife in the wilds of Southern California. This photo was taken on Hwy 395 near Lone Pine. I just think this area is so beautiful and looks different in every season. Today was great with the clouds and the lighting.

  • BUGLER
    by Charlene Aycock

    US$6.65–US$152.00

An Idaho elk sounding off… taken just before hunting season started. I followed him as he moved up the hill, he would stop and sound off every now and then, and was still sounding off as the sun had set. It was a great opportunity. I used my Canon Rebel XT, with a 250 mm lens. This was taken as is.

  • A magic day gets me this close to what has become my friend. We sat together for a long time, in the woods. This king of all he surveys is as gentle as a lamb until aroused, then he becomes a spectacular and awesome sight. His bellow can be heard for a mile after a victory for the ladies. He allows me to be there, accepts me. I love this animal and all he stands for. Dignity, beauty, splendor, gentle, friendly, accepting, a bit dangerous, and free. 10 feet from antler top to ground when standing.

Bull Elk in all his magnificence

  • We had Elk visitors this morning….there were 5 of them, all ladies, just wandering through the neighborhood in the morning sun, munching on grass, finding all the new green sprigs they could….Estes Park, Colorado. They are looking rather scruffy this time of year, as their winter coats start to be replaced by their more sleek, summer coats…. You might think I would get tired of taking pictures of them, but I never do….I hope my childlike fascination with them does not get boring to you all…..

  • This photograph was taken of Mission Creek as it flows through the / National Bison Range Wildlife Refuge and National Park which encompasses over 18,000 acres. Mission Creek headwaters flow from the Mission Mountains and the Mission Reservoir of the Flathead Indian Reservation of Northwest Montana, and its springs, and winter snow melt that gives life to this valley … eventually joining the Flathead River which is a tributary to the Clark Fork River and is part of the Columbia River Basin.

  • Original Acrylics Painting by Karön Melillo d’Vega This is a vintage antique saw blade used in a saw mill to cut trees into lumber. / The saw blade measures 20 inches diameter and 60 inches circumference. I painted a landscape scene using Acrylics and showing two / Rocky Mountain Elk bulls during the “rut” which happens in the autumn. During the rut bulls battle for dominance, the strongest bull wins the battle and becomes the only bull in the herd which will breed the Elk cows in his herd. The defeated bull no matter how magnificent respects the victorious bull and will not breed any cows. The victorious bull Elk will protect his harem of cows against any challenge from another bull throughout the year and forever as long as he lives unless defeated by another bull.

  • LAST ONE TO CROSS
    by Sandy Stewart

    US$3.99–US$91.20

Roosevelt Elk: Cervus canadensis roosevelti After five Roosevelt Elk Cows and their calves crossed a dirt road, one could hear an elk calling to her herd in the distance. After a few minutes, an adult cow appeared on the other side of the road and as she crossed, I snapped a couple of shots of her. In this particular herd there was only one yearling Bull elk. I am hoping to find a nice mature bull elk to capture! Roosevelt Elk, which are also known as Wapiti, are the largest member of the ungulate family, even larger than the Rocky Mountain Elk found on the mainland. Roosevelt Elk can be found in great herds on Vancouver Island and in parts of the United States. Three small herds have also been transplanted to the mainland of British Columbia from Vancouver Island herds. A distinguishing feature of Roosevelt Elk is the large white-tan patch on their rump. / / Calves are born in May and June. The mother (called a cow) usually leaves the herd to give birth in isolation. Around four weeks later, she will return to the herd with her calf. The rut begins in the early fall with the bull ‘bugling’ his presence to the cows. Although a herd may have several bulls, there is a dominant bull that will defend his harem against challengers. A challenge usually involves a clashing of antlers. If a young bull challenges the dominant bull and fails, he will be ousted from the herd. A mature bull can weigh as much as 453.6 Kilograms (1000 lbs) and in some cases more!
