  • Ki and Enki
    by Helena Nelson-Reed

    US$4.16–US$95.00

Watercolor and colored pencil. Original sold. Here the Lady Ki, Mother Earth, reclines beneath Enki, the Stag King. In many cultures throughout history the elk, deer, or stag is connected with nobility, virility, and untamed, wild nature. They are resting after their combined efforts creating the land and all that dwells upon, within, and above it. This painting was inspired by Sumerian creation myths dating earlier than 5000 BCE. I’m depicting the god Enki, often associated with the stag, and Lady Ki, or Mother Earth. Together this divine pair created what is now refered to as the Fertile Crescent; Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey. Below is a brief explanation of this painting, which Ive written as if spoken by master magician Enki, patron god of artisans, also known as Sweet Water. “From the very beginning, when my beloved and I first arrived at this place, we saw possibility. Creatrix and creator, together we fashioned clay prototypes for all manner of living beings. I assisting, Ki birthed our plant children and the world became a living tapestry. I then bathed her weary body with fresh flowing waters and on a whim, to see her smile, filled these with dancing fish. My Lady Ki: fertility itself, wherever she steps there springs forth abundance! We two, the Great Stag and Mother of Earth, populated the earth with all that runs and flies. Ki’s supple energy is replicated in all green and fecund things, and to this day everywhere I look, I see her face.” Text and image copyright Helena Nelson -Reed

  • Geisha
    by Nicolas Rix

    US$3.99–US$91.20

A surrealistic piece I did ages ago. It’s possibly the illustration I’m most proud of. I had put a lot of time and effort developing this style for myself. It borrows aspects of anime movie style illustration from movies such as – Ghost in the shell and Patlabor, aswell as every Hayao Miyazaki film. It was hand drawn. I started with the Geisha then added the other elements separately similarly to how an animator might build up a scene. Detail:

  • The ancient Celtic god Cerrunos is known by many names, including the Stag King, Lord of the Hunt, Lord of the Wildwood, or Green Man. He’s portrayed with totems I personally associate with him. Lord of the Wildwood is the consort of the goddess portrayed in another painting on my RedBubble page titled ‘Lady of the Wildwood’. The hawk in this painting is the same goddess, perched upon her Half Side’s wrist and guised in the form of a raptor. She’s not a captive, but has voluntarily placed her heart in his safekeeping: note her heart on a string, so loosely entangled in his fingers. He guards it well and would never hold her against her will, nor attempt to prevent her taking flight. The empty place in her chest is where her heart once beat, now replaced by an hourglass shape. The hourglass motif symbolizes eternity, for they are lovers season after season, life after life, for all time. Below is an excerpt from what I’ve written about this image. The Stag King’s Song: “I am the masculine spirit of the woodland, male energy balanced and personified. I am the virile, high leaping stag, traversing the tangled and mysterious wildwood with fleet, sure hooves of darkness and light. I am the traveler of worlds, clear stag sight piercing the secret places existing between the dimensions of velvet shadow intertwined with cool, silvery moonlight. Neither bruised leaf, nor single cloven hoof print gathering water in the moist, nor dark mud beside the hidden spring marks my silent passing. Twilight, the crossroads time when day intersects night and the landscape is veiled and indistinct, is the doorway. Between the hours of dusk till dawn, I shed my human shell, and journey forth into other worlds. I dance. I dance until my thoughts flow from this dense dimension and enter the realm of ephemeral, transitory realities; No longer earthbound, I am the lengthening ray of golden fire shot from sun’s bow. Watch my trajectory crossing the encroaching night, caressing a hawk’s dark wing with my final, brief streak of flame as she arcs homeward to nest. I am the spark of playful intelligence flashing in otter’s eye – am indeed a fine, shining otter lithe of body and resilient of soul, rejoicing in the tumbling waters and white foam. I am the glint of light illuminating a perfect curve of ivory fang – wolf’s enigmatic smile; I see beyond the mask, perceive you for what you are. I am cougar, stealthy, silky, the color of dry leaves, and as I set my great, silent paw upon dry pine needles – hear my harsh, snarling cry. I am the masculine soul infusing the heart of the greenwood, and all wild things within and along her boundaries. I am male energy balanced, male energy personified”. • Paradise Road
    by Ben Pacificar

    US$3.99–US$91.20

Location: Elk Grove California / Technique: HDR (High Dynamic Range) and Time Lapse This was absolutely the hardest sequence of shots I have ever done,,,, Ever! Loved the way the trees lined up along this dirt road except that they were originally only on the right side. Did my HDR sequence at about 6:30pm just for the trees. Then I shot a 1260 second exposure with an ND Cokin Gradual filter later at about 10pm in complete darkness with only the moon for light.

Yesterday we had our lunch by the lake, then walked along the shore talking to the ducks and just breathing in the beautiful fall day….as we walked back toward the car, I just happened to turn around and there, in the water, was a little herd of elk…...they were crossing the lake, bulls rounding up their ladies, young ones trailing along…..we watched them in the water and on the land for over an hour, fascinated by their beauty and entertained by their interaction…...I hope you enjoy these shots…. Lake Estes, Estes Park, Colorado.

  • Watercolor on watercolor board, sold. / This painting is based on a traditional Lakota men’s medicine society for those who’ve expereinced a dream or had a vision indicating they’ve a specific type of elk medicine. I don’t know if it exists anymore, but the archetype and energy certainly does, as many of us women can attest to. There two kinds of elk medicine. One is positive, embodying the qualities of leadership, caring for one’s mate and protecting the community, knowing when to speak, when to hold one’s tongue. Then there’s the darker aspect . A person may be one or the other, but not both. This painting depicts the shadow aspect . Elk spirits (the same as deer spirits) in this tradition manifest as charismatic humans of both genders. Those who dream of them are Elk Dreamers(ED). Mortals possessing elk medicine exercise the sexual power over the opposite gender as elk during the rut. Elk spirits and dreamers speak quietly and move silently along the outskirts of camp, trails, and in lonely places. Here I’ve painted the inner self of an ED, without his handsome form. The rectangle over the heart is a window into the spirit realms, for he travels dimensions at will. It also symbolizes the mirror ED’s used in society dances to flash at and thus capture/ possess the hearts and souls of female observers. ED’s prefer inexpereinced women, so girls and single young women were always kept away from their dances. An elk spirit, just like female deer spirits, is cleverly disguised as a human right down to the feet. Only hoof prints left in soft earth will betray their true form to those who know the signs. The slender strands connecting elk to the environment are ties to the land and the primal. An elk spirit shapeshifts and morphs into or out of the brush just like the wild animal, symbolized by tiny stylized flowers in the background and landscape flowing over his form. The tiny horizontal hourglass shapes are butterflies portrayed as depicted in old beadwork and ledger art. Butterfly, kimamah, is sometimes associated with elk medicine. The mask – like visage is the way I envision a elk spirit beneath the pleasing image he or she displays to the human world. Its based on gnarled tree stumps, roots, the human skull and twisted face masks found in many indigenous cultures. From his belt dangle the dried out shells of victims from whom he’s sucked the life energy, leaving them hollow. Women willingly give themselves to him, despite the warnings of others and their own better judgement. The ED consumes them as a spider sucks life energy from a butterfly (ED’s are connected with spider) leaving them heartbroken, lethargic, depressed, weak and disoriented. He can do nothing else, for this is his nature. In the background shadowy spirit elk dance across the land, reminding us of his powers and where they come from. The elk leaping from the main subject represents the act of intentionally luring a potential victim away from the camp circle and into the unknown. The spider web spread across the antlers is a metaphor for mitakuye oyasin, Lakota for “We are all Connected (or related)” for ES’s have a place in the great hoop. The shadow aspect of elk and all other dark energies are part of life, just as Light is. The web also symbolizes his ability to snare and trap souls, and affiliation with Iktomi (spider), the trickster. Don’t play games with elk spirits, for you’ll always lose….your heart. by Charlene Aycock

    US$6.65–US$152.00

Took this too, about one hour or so, elk down from the mountains to feed in the meadow. Storm clouds clearing, and the sun rays from the mountains just thought it was all so beautiful. I took this shot in Southern California, hence the title. Who would have thought you could see such great wildlife in the wilds of Southern California. This photo was taken on Hwy 395 near Lone Pine. I just think this area is so beautiful and looks different in every season. Today was great with the clouds and the lighting.
