  • A few weeks back I was all organized to do a landscape photography clinic at the Pinnacles with a school group as part of their outdoor Ed course. Unfortunately the day it was to happen was one of heat and high winds and with the Black Saturday fires still burning the government placed a blanket ban on all school camps state wide. The outdoor Ed teacher is still keen to do it as an afternoon activity so I scouted out some locations on Port Phillip Bay on Wednesday after school with this spot being the best. This is very much a filter created image and is shall we say an artistic rendering of the scene I actually saw. Firstly I put a circular polariser in front of the lens then attached a Cokin P filter holder onto that. Into this I put a Cokin P121S, 3 stop graduated neutral density filter, a P121 F full length 3 stop graduated neutral density filter and a Cokin P197 Sunset Filter. The effect of all this glass in front of the lens was to cut down the light enough to give a nice long exposure to flatten the water, the grads to even out the exposure of the very bright sky and the sunset to give it a bit of colour which the day had yet to deliver. Later on when it had delivered it the foreground rocks were in such deep shadow that a similar composition would not have worked as well. I also got wet to my middle to get in the right position. Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM @ 28mm / Filter: circular polariser, Cokin P. 121S, 3 stop graduated neutral density filter, a P121 F full length 3 stop graduated neutral density filter and a Cokin P. 197 Sunset Filter / ISO: 100 (in retrospect ISO 50 would of been better) / Shutter Speed: 2.5sec / Aperture: f/22 / WB: Auto / Exposure Compensation: +2/3rds stop / When: 6:40pm on 11/3/09 For other shots in this genre check out my Melbourne/ Urban Landscapes gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society

Originally the clinic was to be held on Phillip Island so I did the conscientious thing and drove all the way down there staying overnight to get a sunset and sunrise and scope out locations properly. When this fell through we re-organised a bay location so I spent another afternoon evening scouting locations and ended up at MT Eliza, Pelican Point being my favorite spot. I’ve now been on two field trips and on top of that spent 20+ hours writing a nine page handout and prepared a 130 page powerpoint presentation on the assurance that the photography clinic would be re-scheduled. My thanks for all this effort has been to have my phone and email messages ignored when I’ve tried to reschedule the date of the clinic. The fact he doesn’t even have the common decency to even let me know whats happening I find appalling, even if this was just to say we’ll do it next year. Still I loved every minute of my two field trips and got some shots I’m really happy with. Just disappointed that my efforts and fee have come to naught. Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 15mm fisheye / Filter: none / ISO: 100 / Shutter Speed: 1/60th sec / Aperture: f/16 / WB: Auto / Exposure Compensation: +2/3rds stop / When: 7:28pm on 11/3/09 For other shots in this genre check out my Melbourne/ Urban Landscapes gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society

  • See extra large view here Mount Eliza is located in the South- West National Park, Tasmania, and covers an area of 6,052 km² (605,213 hectares) forming part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The park is well known for its pristine wilderness and remoteness, while weather in the park is highly changeable, and can be severe. The area is largely unaffected by humans. Although evidence shows Tasmanian Aborigines have visited the area for at least 25,000 years, and European settlers have made occasional forays into the park area since the 19th century, there has been very little permanent habitation and only minimal impact on the natural environment. The core of the park was created in 1955 and was originally called Lake Pedder National Park. Over the following 35 years the park was gradually extended and renamed, finally reaching its present size in 1990. Within the area there is only one road, to the hydro-electricity township of Strathgordon. The southern and western reaches of the park are far removed from any vehicular access. The only access is by foot, boat, or light aircraft. Canon 40D 18-55 IS, polariser, tonemapped

  • “Eliza Furnace was constructed in 1845 and 1846. At its peak, the furnace employed over 90 people and utilized 45 mules to produce about 1,080 tons of iron a year.” / “Dating from 1846 the Eliza Furnace is one of only a few iron furnaces remaining in the United States which still retains its original heat exchanger piping.” This structure is 32 feet tall. • This shot is a giant 11 shot stitch and is just shy of a full 360 degrees (I shot enough to do the 360 this composition just worked better). For those who like silly technical image facts the original is around 5 meters (17 feet) long by about 1 meter (3 feet) high at 300dpi and with 2 layers created a 3.8 gigabyte file which almost gave my computer a hernia taking around 20 minutes to save. Pelican Point is in Port Phillip Bay near Melbourne. For obvious reasons best viewed large. Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM @ 35mm / Filter: UV / ISO: 100 / Shutter Speed: 1/6th sec / Aperture: f/16 / WB: Auto / Exposure Compensation: +2/3rds stop / Velbon tripod with a Really Right Stuff pano head / When: 7:13pm on 11/3/09 For other shots in this genre check out my Melbourne/ Urban Landscapes gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society
