Elephants cry, play, have incredible memories, and laugh! / Elephants are sensitive fellow animals where if a baby complains, the entire family will rumble and go over to touch and caress it. Elephants have greeting ceremonies when a friend that has been away for some time returns to the group. Elephants grieve at a loss of a stillborn baby, a family member, and in many cases other elephants. Elephants don’t drink with their trunks, but use them as “tools” to drink with. This is accomplished by filling the trunk with water and then using it as a hose to pour it into the elephant’s mouth. About Elephants You’ve heard the phrase an elephant never forgets? Well, here’s another example of the intelligence of these gentle giants. The elephant in this video, who was rescued from abusive treatment in Burma, actually paints a beautiful self-portrait! Watch him paint How can this be? Well, elephants are one of the most intelligent animals in the world. They have highly developed brains, with traits similar to humans, apes and dolphins. In fact, even though this elephant may have been trained to paint pictures, elephants are known to display traits of self-awareness. For instance, if an elephant sees its image in a mirror, it may try to rub a smudge of dirt off its face. Elephants are also known to grieve, use tools, show a sense of humor, and also share in joyful events, such as gathering to greet a newborn. Simply amazing! Acrylic On Canvas Ophelia,Phoebe and Mel having fun on the elephant’s back….and elephant was pleased to have their company as well! :D This was painted in May’08 and I remembered I had a yearning to want to visit Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand :D..so that was why I painted these 3 friends having an outing with the elephant….because there are many elephant reserves there in Chiang Mai, where they protect these precious animals from harm. I was glad to be able to go on that trip in June’08 this year! :D / / You can view and buy my other “On A Giant’s Back” creations from my Zazzle Gallery:

When we were at the San Diego Zoo several years ago, we had the pleasure of photographing a whole family of elephants. They were all characters and I fell in love with them all. This one was the daddy from all appearances. When I captured this shot, I instantly thought of the old Gilda Radner of the Saturday Night Live show from years ago and the well-known line she was known for, ”...so funny I forgot to laugh!”, I loved that show. Clean humor without dirty jokes or such things. Anyway, that is how this big guy got the title, “So Funny, I Forgot to Laugh”. Minor HDR digital enhancement. I did not want to enhance this image too much to detract from its natural beauty, so I used minor HDR enhancement using Photomatix. Images Do Not Belong To The Public Domain. PHOTO TAKEN AT THE NOORDER ZOO IN THE NETHERLANDS 09/09/2008 / The Asian Elephant / (Elephas maximus), sometimes known by the name of one of its subspecies – the Indian Elephant, is one of the two living species of elephant, and the only living species of the genus Elephas. It is the largest living land animal in Asia. The species is found primarily in large parts of Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Indochina and parts of Indonesia. It is considered endangered, with between 25,600 and 32,750 left in the wild. This animal is widely domesticated, and has been used in forestry in South and Southeast Asia for centuries and also in ceremonial purposes. Historical sources indicate that they were sometimes used during the harvest season primarily for milling. Wild elephants attract tourist money to the areas where they can most readily be seen, but damage crops, and may enter villages to raid gardens. /
